Making a Game about Games without Sacrificing the Gameplay

Hey, I wanted to talk about the game I am making a little bit to see what people think of the idea and get some reactions. The thing is, I've been working on it for at least six months now and I haven't gotten much feedback on it, and I just want to at least vent a little bit about the process I'm working to see if anyone has anything to say, or has any criticism or even ideas as to why it could succeed famously or fail brilliantly.

The concept of my game, ExXception Draft, is, in a world much like our own, only, it is the mid 1990's and yet somehow more futuristic, the government reacts to a series of school shootings and a video-game-related bank robbery by enacting some extreme measures to ban violent media, especially violent video games. And the gameplay involves a character who then takes this as his impetus for wreaking havok on the populace in the form of games. Setting up games, aiming for broad social experiments more than sadistic 'Saw' death traps, or even 'Joker'-like savage satire, and often hounding the CIA agents on his trail reading the clues in his wake. Viewing creative expression as an important outlet and the freedom of speech as sacred are implicit to this 'gamemaker', and yet, taken a step further, by intepreting (key word) the actions of the government as telling people what they are capable (another key word) of experiencing (major key word), they are enforcing not only a way of life, but a life, not just lived a certain way... but directed a certain way. As if, you could do whatever you want, sure, they would be saying to us, but only if you follow this single file line through these serpentine corridors while you attempt to do so.

So, my "game" inevitably interprets the "philosophy of games" as a philosophy of life, and takes a stance of game = testing experience, which is a possible set up for an ideal of experimentation, a world of bold living out of possibilities, possibly, perhaps, literally utopia (no-place) where one can dream of imaginary worlds that are-not but can-be.

Recruiting for Team for In-Production Game - ExXception Draft

I'm working on a game with RPG Maker XP and I've been working on it solo for a long while and I have need to get some other people involved to see what people think of the project and get some other hands and minds working on the various areas of production.

My skills are mainly as a writer and idea person, though I'm pretty good at mapping and overall project design. I need help with the following areas:

1) Integrating Blizz ABS fully into the engine
2) Making Custom Sprites for NPC, and Enemy Classes including Blizz ABS action sprites with Weapons and Projectiles
3) Making some custom Tilesets in the future to give the game its own unique atmosphere
4) Making title screens for a unique 'chapter by chapter' feel for the narrative
5) Composing original music or matching appropriate royalty free music to fit areas and characters in game

I have a lot of the story and background work done, and I am working right now toward the goal of putting together a demo, but it'll take most of the elements from the list above to get there. If you're interested in joining the team, PM me and we can discuss the project further. For now you can check out the game's profile on RMN, or visit the tumblr where I post random stuff related to the project.

Really Simple Request But Hard to Find by Search

I'm looking for an animation - just a few frames, like 3 or 4, that I can place over an item on the map to let people know that there is something there if they click on it... like, an item to pick up, or even just a description of the scenery. The best I've seen is in the game 'One Night Full Circle', and I even tried to find the one that was used in the game files but can't find it.

Just like a couple of white lines that look like a faintly twinkling star would do, back and forth, from up and down, to left and right... just like the one in... One Night Full Circle. Or something similar, I am open to suggestions.

I would try to animate it but I have zero pixel skills. I'd really appreciate if you have something like this, or if you're able to whip something up.

The Rare/Obscure RM Games Request Topic

Hi. I'm looking for a game I ran across on a website a while back, I'm almost certain it was a web/flash port of an RPG Maker game, maybe it was on New Grounds or one of those sites, but I only played it for like half an hour and can't find it again.

The thing that struck me about it was that it used large portions of text when you would find books on bookshelves, like you could almost read the books you found lying around. It was set in a school, and I think it might have been made by someone Japanese writing in English.

I'm trying to make my game with a similar system re: books, and I really liked the writing style of this game. It was very sarcastic... or satiric. I wish I could remember more about it. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Looking for Pixel Artists / Spriters

I thought if anyone wanted to do this I would at least give them a hint at what I was looking for. The first cities I need titles for are San Francisco, CA. And Lawrence, Kansas. I'm looking for high contrast images, kind of like maybe the opening sequence of The Butterfly Effect, or maybe from this movie: The Island of Dr. Moreau. So, kind of sci-fi with an organic feel, like the text is overgrown and the whole image is like a biological culture... mainly looking for a black base with white outlines and then bold, neon, flourescent colors for definition and the rest of the content. That's pretty much all the input I have. If you can make the image the landmarks of the city, or in Lawrence, KS case, just kind of representative of the make up of the cityscape, like, half industrial, half agriculture, a college town.. so like, a smokestack, empty parking lot, and what looks like a university building, with the smokestack drawing the most attention. See what I'm going for?

And then the guy moves to San Francisco from Lawrence and takes up his paranormal investigator business there.

And eventually, I'll need Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Chicago, New York, Tokyo, and New Orleans.
Thanks if you read through this whole thing. I'm really putting a lot into this project and your contribution will be appreciated and rewarded by a quality finished game down the road. The demo should be out soon.

Looking for Pixel Artists / Spriters

Hi. I'm working my way up to releasing a demo, probably in the next couple of weeks, and I'm looking for some people who want to help me with doing some custom screens, like scene-screens, for locations "NEW YORK" for example (my game takes place in about a half-dozen different cities, and moves around), which I want to be all in a similar style. Kind of gritty, punk, dirty street life, with a touch-of-neon cyberpunk.

And I'm also looking for some custom characters in a similar vein.
If you're at all interested, message me and we can discuss the project further.
You'll get full credit for everything, keep rights to your work, but I can't pay anything.

The demo involves your first case as a paranormal investigator and then your *new* first case when you move to California and get your P.I. license and have to track down an ex-military man's daughter, who he believe's has been abducted, by a cult.

'Postmodern' RM Games

I don't really use the term 'Postmodern' because I think it's too dismissive of things that came before, but my game is pretty self-aware as far as story-telling, and I might use the word 'Meta' to describe it. My game is called 'ExXception Draft' and is currently in production.

I've also recently discovered another game in progress on here called Middens which looks awesome.

All My Thoughts of Angels - some short fiction - might be part of my game

ALL MY THOUGHTS OF ANGELS

The billboard says it all. An aspirin right now could take away the headache of sitting in traffic staring at billboards. You’d think subtlety was a lost art.

Los Angeles at midday is best avoided. But to be driven through her is not always as unendearing as this, when claustraphobically stuck akimbo in the back of a corporate limo at the behest of the big man, one and only whose fatness of wallet can shame these windows this tinted. He sits across from you, or rather, you sit across from him, and he speeds away into the distance and you recede into your seat and wonder at your choice of occupation and whether the fact that you must deal with such manner of men as these automatically means that your business sincerely shakes hands. Only the abcense of a ticking clock hung keeps this from being hell on wheels.
“You have information in your possess, which you yourself do not know the importance of. Without a larger picture, your pieces are worthless,” the devil speaks, and loses power in the naming.
“Are you speaking generally? Or..”
“Please speak up, Mr. Onkara cannot hear you if you do not speak up,” his lackey says.
I wonder if this is true or if he is speaking on behalf of recording equipment, or if these differentiations matter.
“I was just saying, if Mr. Onkara has the bigger picture, what does he need me for?”
“Every agency requires agents. Every power requires powers of agency. You are to be the eyes, arms, and ears of.. the power, which needs the insight of your control over it.”
“You want my eyes.”
“As the saying goes, it is you who has said it, not I.”
“Are you talking about implants? Camereyes? Something skull dug?”
“We’ll work that out later. We promise you won’t even know we’re there.”
“And I’m to do… what? What are you… looking.. for?”
“Just continue doing what you’ve been doing. In your line of work, you are familiar with silent partners, and have used your fair share of informants. You’ll forget we even have a deal once you realize there will be no drop point… no… back and forth.”
I shuddered to think. “Well.. I mean, the cost I have in mind is astronomical. Privacy is a.. privilege in this day and age, and joining the club of the disenfranchised with such high clearance is nearly tantamount to selling your soul.”
“No, just the windows to it.”
I sat still. Silent.
“Think of us as farmers to your hunter-gathering. The worst we can do is start a civilization off your fruits. And, you spoke of astronomical figures. Consider this.”
He handed me a card. A single figure. Infinity.
“A credit account. Unaccountable, so to speak..”
“That would be the price.”
“So, the deal is acceptable?”
“Anything for a laugh.”
“Strange fellow.” He pushed a button on the arm rest.

“Driver. We’ll be on our way to have our lenses installed.”

There is one thing. We don’t want your newfound wealth to interfere with your lifestyle. So, there are times when your credit will be declined. This is the only form of communication we’ll have with you.

I had already said yes. They had their power.

I blinked. The billboard says it all. An aspirin right now could take away the headache of sitting in traffic staring at billboards. You’d think subtlety was a lost art.

Anyone Care to Help with Making Paranormal Investigator Sprites or Tiles?

author=InfectionFiles
I definitely wouldn't keep a garbage can in front of a chalkboard, seems stinky.

You have given me much to ponder. : )

Yeah. Thanks for the feedback both of you. I didn't consider these maps finished or anything. I always work on the whole thing at once so I've got a bunch of maps that are all there in theory but aren't exactly polished.

But I'm still looking for pixel artists.

Middens

Subscribed. Looks supercool.
