Description

The 2011 RMN Summer Games is a game-making contest, the goal of which is to make a game within one month. A theme will be announced at the start of the contest to ensure equal footing and development time for all participants, but otherwise just have fun making games!

-The contest will begin on August 1st 12:00 AM GMT and run until August 31st 11:59 PM GMT. Entries must be completed during this time frame.
-You may work with a team of any size to make a game.
-Your game may be made in any engine and may be any genre, not just an RPG.

-You ought to have permission to use all art, music, or other content. Rips will be frowned upon. How the content was created does not matter so long as you have the rights to use it.
-The game should run on Windows XP or higher. The judges should not require any additional components to play your entry.
-Show good sportsmanlike conduct towards your competitors.
-Most important rule: Have fun!

-All games will be required to loosely incorporate the theme (TBA. The theme could be anything from a setting to an abstract concept.)
-Entries started before the allotted time will be frowned upon. Entries submitted after the deadline will not be accepted. Extensions will be granted only in extraordinary circumstances. PLAN AHEAD.
-All entries will require a gameprofile.
-You must submit your entry to the event page (using the submission tools below).

For the images, check if the file extension is saved as .jpg. If so, print-screen new ones as .png as they have better quality.
If that doesn't work, I'd recommend PM'ing an admin/moderator.

stop making this event appear in notices...
Soooo, anyone else gotten to what's more or less the halfway point now and realised the rules on this are really freaking strict? I'm still making graphics and trying (badly) to make midi music in Anvil, I have my plot set out, I know some puzzles I want to throw in, along with some definite enemies, but damn, this 'you must have the right to use everything' rule is killing my progress.

No the rules are not stupid. I think it should always go without saying that you should have permission to use any and all resources in any game you make.

Especially in one that is in a competition though.
Hmm, for the record I'm using freely-available publicly-released RM resources (not custom, except for some sprites and a few things) and will probably use either public domain music (of which you can find loads on newgrounds and the internet in general) or stuff I make myself. I don't see how not using rips is a problem.

Nobody said you have to make everything yourself, though.
Who really cares about being disqualified anyway. There's a huge turnout, most contributors are actually going to get a finished game out within the month, and there can be only one winner anyway. It's good to see so many people turning out for this competition when thinking back to the last few. It doesn't sound like too many people have given up yet either. The strict rules more or less just help the judges to narrow their search for the winner.

I was a little worried at the beginning that this meant that not every entry would get a fair shake... realistically that probably won't happen anyway with 30 or so teams competing (unless every game is only 10 mins long or so, which I sincerely doubt). We should all try and approach this as a chance for personal growth in design, writing, and innovation, rather than just a grab for attention on the front page. I'm having fun making mine, and I'm looking forward to the reactions from players who manage to make it the entire way through, moreso than the judges' reactions as they may not have the time to spend going from start to finish.

Giving each entry an honest and equal try is quite a charge, so we need to be as lenient with our expectations of the judging as we hope they'll be with the rules.

I doubt every team will finish, but if even six or seven completed games come out of this I'd consider that to be a pretty great turn-out.

*Still trying to make map graphics, failing, and considering using Mack N Blue or something*
I don't understand why is everybody getting Notice messages from this event page but me. :(

I just remembered something I consider pretty surreal (and inspiring): Aphex Twin music videos.

(or pretty much every music video)

On that note, how is everypony's estimate on their ability to submit a game on time?

I am afraid that I will have to pull out. I severely doubt that I will be able to make the game I wanted to make in time. (so what does that make my track record for these events? 0 for 3? 0 for 4? Why do I even sign up?)

hey at least you didnt give up an hour after you signed up

There's actually enough time to have another idea and start it from scratch. There are two weeks left... the time it took all previous events' (Game Chill, Game Gale) games to be made.

Come on, Kentona, you can do it! If the guy who de Hero's Sword can make a game for this competition, surely great designer as yourself can do the same. You still go time, man; don't give up yet!
