Description

This year marked the 50th year of the first Pride marches to take place. With so much that has been going on in the world - so much discrimination, hate and ignorance - it's time we step up and shout proudly about who and what we are!

Often various groups are under-appreciated and under-represented.

Our identity is important, and thus, this event to create games with more representation of those who get a bum deal when it comes to this shit. Our culture, our race, our sexuality, our gender. Who we are matters and we deserve to be represented in ways that we can appreciate and share with others.

And thus begins a day for each year taken to throw open the doors of ignorance and expose the world to our flaming amazingness. Or something. Let's gammak!

Theme:

REPRESENTATION

Rules
- You have 50 days to make your game.
- Any resources allowed but be mindful of Let's Players and streamers when it comes to copyrighted content.
- Any engine.
- Game must be more than 20 minutes long. Longer time, longer game requirement.
- Event runs from Saturday the 11th July until Monday the 18th August
- Game must be created during that time.
- Must have an accepted game page so that you may submit.

SUBMIT ENTRIES BY MAKING A GAME PAGE, ADDING THE DOWNLOAD THERE THEN SUBMITTING IT HERE.

I don't think it needs to be said, but I'm going to say it now so no-one can say I didn't say it earlier - this event is not about representing hate groups nor racial groups that are already over-represented. It's to draw attention to those groups that are under-represented in media. So if I find a game about Brittany the straightest, whitest Cali teen who ever Cali'd and how she is falling in love with Stevie McWhiteboy, the straightest and whitest Cali boi who ever Cali'd, or a game about being a cop who gets to beat down black folk, I will revoke your ability to gammak. Somehow. I'll find a way. So help me Lord Aremen, I will.

Thank you, that is all.

Gretgor, that's where I'm admittedly confused and seeking clarification. Glad it's not just me though!

I don't know. I can respect it if the event would rather focus on marginalized voices talking about their own experience, because as a straight white upper middle class dude, I do not have first hand experience on what opressed groups go through, and it'd be insensitive of me to pretend that I do. If that is the case, I'll still make my game, but I'll release it outside the jam.

However, if it's still okay to participate, I'll try my best to make something good to support the causes without pretending I know things I couldn't possibly have lived through. Incindentally, that's why the story is told from the perspective of the matchmaker, not the single people.
Im sure most are making games for the rainbow, but there are many other situations that people get shunned for. Like as description said, Race, Culture, sexuality, and or Gender like trans. But Mental illnesses are also looked down upon. So someone with Autism will fit for the event.

Happy to see you join though! (same for everyone else)

See, I have the issue that I will need to come up with a story beyond the circumstances of my own experience, while (hopefully) drawing from and incorporating that experience.
Given the fact that it's a continuous gender experience in my case that I am faaar from having incorporated fully into my daily life....... yeah. I am like, terrified of diving in there for this event, though I love the idea of it at the same time.

It can be a strength to not be in the midst of it sometime! Is what imma try n say. As long as you research proper or maybe ask for some feedback during the process I see no problem. (your description sounds hELLA cute, btw! I would love to play something light-hearted :D We need those too)

Edit: Oh yeah. Reading up more. Eh, more diversity is good! Neurodiversity is good too! I meet a lot of people WITH it, yet unless you look more into things yourself, you really KNOW little about even the basics. (autism, tourette etc.)

Go for it!

Re-reading the description and comments so far, it's very clear this is a pride event first and foremost.

My concern is I'd be coming in as a straight white guy and hijacking a very important platform to selfishly discuss my own agenda about neurodiversity. I don't think that would be appropriate or fair, and I think that would dilute the message of what would otherwise be a very concentrated cause.

I disagree with the thought that the event should only be LGBT+, though I do see the initial thought with that. I don't mean to disrespect anyone here, especially as I'm going for a transgender narrative myself, but going queer with this one seems a bit of a copout, comparatively speaking. If the event says it's meant to be for any marginalized group, it is. I really respect the idea of going with neurodiversity, or any other rep that isn't just LGBT+, for this jam.

Shucks, I've been diagnosed with Aspergers before it was funneled into Autism Spectrum Disorder, and I'd done some research into it myself. I do have my moments where I've felt or acted different compared to neurotypical folks, but I myself don't know any better. To help articulate Raziya being on the spectrum from a narrative standpoint, I'd skimmed some accounts of what stands out among young adults with ASD.

As Raziya can be a self-insert in various ways, I do have my own experiences to mirror onto her. This is tricky, for while writers write what they know, I don't want her to be a mere mouthpiece for my views and experiences. That rarely works *coughsethmcfarlanecough*. From my own experiences of what I'm doing for my own game, a) it feels like my distinctions from neurotypical folks were most noticeable looking back to my childhood, and b) I was rather late to understand my gender identity, though modern culture didn't help to inform about folks like me till the '10s.

This tangent was longer than I meant, but tl;dr I'm still looking into how other higher-functioning autistic and/or pre-transition trans people grew up.

While I can't read Liberty's mind, we've had several pride events, and they usually have pretty clearly defined rules regarding what your game needs to be about. None of the rules state that your game must be explicitly about queer themes this time. Liberty's writeup seems to be a celebration of pride that's more widely about making games and being inclusive as we raise spirits and raise awareness with our gam mak.

Given that the mission statement of this jam seems to be fighting discrimination, hate and ignorance, and expanding people's viewpoint when it comes to people who are often misunderstood and/or discriminated against, I'm going to go ahead and assume that as long as your game is exploring a viewpoint that could use more awareness that you're probably a-okay.

"Often various groups are under-appreciated and under-represented.

Our identity is important, and thus, this event to create games with more representation of those who get a bum deal when it comes to this shit. Our culture, our race, our sexuality, our gender. Who we are matters and we deserve to be represented in ways that we can appreciate and share with others."

It sounds like, if your game fits under that previous statement, you're a-okay. I'll ask for full clarification from the rest of staff to make sure (I'm not sure if Liberty's able to respond at the moment), but given the fact that the rules are as open as they are, it would seem to indicate that making a game about another type of representation is just fine.

The only no-no here is making a game that is blatantly anti-pride. Don't make a game that insults people who have been discriminated against, or is about something like "I'm so oppressed because I hate gay people" or something like that. I feel like normally this would be obvious, but we've had some people with some very distressing views on the matter on the site in the past -_-
Empathy is something we can all employ as human beings. Exploring and trying to understand other viewpoints than our own is perfectly fine. I don't expect everyone to write only what they know. The theme is to represent the unrepresented - those who, as you stated, get a bum deal when it comes to recognition.

This means neural a-typical, gender, sexuality, racial, etc issues are things you can certainly touch on as long as you do so in a respectful manner, without malicious or ignorant intentions.

Hope that clears things up a bit.

... Unity beat me to the punch and said it more eloquently than I can at 3am~ish. XD

But, yes, this year it's not just about LGBT+ (though that is certainly a theme that can be explored!) but all marginalised groups. Basically lumping a bunch of aspects together into one mega event (BLM, Pride month and anniversary, Hong Kong, etc, etc, all coming together).

I guess I should share my idea with you guys, maybe it will help undecided people come up with ideas of their own.

So, my main character is an expert "matchmaker", her specialty is bringing people together and forming romantic couples. She gets called to a beautiful tropical island to help form couples between the island's youth. There are four guys and four girls in the island, and the chief is adamant that you only pair guys with girls and vice-versa.

However, as the matchmaker explores the island and discovers the preferences and feelings of the young singles, she realizes it is impossible to make everyone happy unless the chief allows two gay couples (two guys, and two girls) to be together, and then she has to convince the chief to let go of his preconcieved notions of how love should work so they can all be happy.

At first, I intended to make it sad and sober, but then I realized it would work better if I made it mostly upbeat and funny with a few sad moments here and there.
This game idea sounds incredibly fun and cute! Historically events on RMN like this haven't barred ppl outside of the group they want to represent, I think

(and obviously that's not the case this time either way!!)

To be fair, if you make communist propaganda I will play it. XD

It would be nice to make a cutesy game about someone trying to escape to the one place that has not been corrupted by capitalism...

Edit: Actually... why not eh? Just need to make sure I don't try to make custom assets, and it should work out.

SPAAACE!!!!! :D

One of the only games I got to QA test for that I actually really enjoyed. XD That really takes me back.

I could just make a very diverse dungeon crawler type game, where the "Represenatation" is just in the party members...But somehow that feels like cheating.

Given that this event is asking for a full gamepage, I'm especially nervous, given my usually absurdly high standards for combat/gameplay/polish before I upload something. XD But Imma give it my best shot.

Plan so far is to have some form of modern RPG with a diverse cast, with some form of supernatural twist to it, to justify my typical deep combat.

I'm considering something like a randomized dungeon crawler (assuming I can manage that), where in order to get stronger, you need to do stuff in the dungeon(s), then come out, help your party members with some form of activism using whatever resources you gained in the dungeon, which makes the dungeon easier, then repeat until a day limit is reached, Persona style, and you see if you're strong enough to beat the final boss.

Edit: Something funny going on with the formatting here. 0_o

Nevermind again! I ditched paralax mapping to instead do my maps from a different perspective. Now I can make the game without any issues! Yay!
Scapped my initial idea. Too big. I'm going back to my roots.

Going back to my original RPGmaker setting, going back to that vaguely formed "Dragon Hunt" story I had, going back to the idea of just 3 dungeons with little story beats in between, with my old battle system.

Yeah, this seems more doable in about....oh god 3 weeks? *mild panicking noises*

But hey, by thinking along more diverse lines, my characters now seem more interesting, or at least have inherent reason to be traveling together for this.

Went from "an old man, wanting to go out in a vengeful blaze of glory, and a pack of other people with little in the way of story because they can be swapped out to make the game more replayable, story be damned" to "The lady seeking vengeance on the dragon, plus her highly supportive girlfriend, their dog, and what amounts to basically a dragon scholar".

I love this! You can't forget the helpful doggo <3
I had what I think is a great idea for this competition. Seeing as how I'm a lone wolf and have a lot going on irl, I'm going to step out of this one. It's difficult enough to find time to work on my main project as it is. Also, my main project allows the protagonist to dress in drag, clown makeup, as a furry, and has a same sex romance option. So, kind of already doing this on a more long term scale.

Mm. It honestly took me a while to realize it doesn't have to be a sad and/or bleak game. We can have happy "Communist Propaganda" for all our tovarisch.

Doggo's mostly going to be a support character with one or two hard hitting attacks, so yeah, VERY helpful Doggo.

I'm torn between wanting to use ATB for some extra granularity in the combat (Differing Turn orders, being able to play with ATB gagues with skills), and going pure turn based (Simpler to manage boss patterns in a puzzle-like manner, easier to handle battle events, etc)

Other than that, I have the basic design skeleton for the combat done, got all my faces and stuff for my trio of humans.

If I were you, I'd go for ATB. It just feels more organic that way, and speed is an actually useful stat.

EDIT: I am terrible at time management. I spent the entire first week of the jam focusing on details instead of big picture stuff. Stupid, silly details that most people might never find because they are associated with optional content. I know making optional content is kind of silly when I have such a short time to work, but I just feel like a lack of optional stuff would make the game feel a bit... thin, given how little in the way of deep mechanics it offers.

To be fair, I don't see it being said anywhere that the game needs to be finished in 50 days. Just that it needs to be created within that time frame and, by the end, have at least 20 minutes of play time. Just mark it as a beta or a part 1 of X.
