Make the spookiest Halloween game ever for your chance to win a 100-dollar Steam Gift Card and other prizes!



All Hallows' Event 2013 is upon us! You have until October 31st at 11:59 PM UTC to make a complete game in any engine based on one or more of the following themes:

- Ghost Stories
- Survival Horror
- Monster Attack
- Halloween Comedy
- Nonfiction Horror


Each of these themes is fairly broad, and you can combine one or more themes! Just please let us know in your game description which theme(s) you are focusing on.

A panel of judges will play each game and rank the top three entries. Users may vote for their favorite game once the contest is over; voting will be handled through this page. Results will be announced via podcast.


Step 1: Sign up for the contest in the "Registration" section below this event description. You can enter this event solo or as a team. Additionally, you may submit as many games or join as many teams as you'd like.
Step 2: Create your game page. Normal submission rules apply.
Step 3: Post your download to the game page once it's approved.
Step 4: Submit your game download to the contest by using the commands on the upper-right corner of this page.

  • The game must be relate to at least one of the five themes: ghost stories, survival horror, monster attack, Halloween comedy, or nonfiction horror. Unsure if you game meets the theme? Just ask!
  • You may use ANY game development engine.
  • Only completed games are allowed! NO DEMOS!
  • Preexisting resources may be used, but no games that were started before the beginning of the event are allowed.
  • No late submissions; the deadline is strictly 11:59pm UTC on Halloween (October 31, 2013). Exceptions may be made if judges find a game-breaking bug.
  • No team limit.
  • You may submit as many games and join as many teams as you'd like.
  • Judges' entries will not be ranked, but they will still quality for the voters' choice achievement.
  • All necessary files must be included in the download.
  • Only one of each prize is available - please take this into account if you're on a team.
  • If the winner does not want a prize, s/he will pass it to the 2nd place winner, and so on, until we find a person who wants it.
  • All of RMN's normal policies apply.

I wish. Last Halloween we had about three kids ring the doorbell. Not even three groups. Just three kids. It wasn't even cold or snowing or anything. It was depressing as hell. :(

The lowest we ever got was around 7. We've been getting between 40-60 kids the past few years. Back in North Battleford we got over 400 kids (there were literal busloads of kids coming in from the reserves).
I picked and edited songs/music tracks today (love the soundtrack but now I'll have the tunes stuck in my head for the next 3 weeks, ugh).
I'll be drawing lots of battlers and maps now. I want animated characters and enemies about 30x45 tall but I'll have to complete the heroes and bosses first in case I don't have time to draw every other monster.
The stages/battle system is not entirely coded yet but I figured it won't take much time to finish it.

My aim is to make the game an easy to pick up, fast-paced turn-based RPG with a hefty amount of available (but not fully mandatory) stat upgrading you can play for 2 or 20 or 60 minutes and still get a lot out of it. Hopefully it will appeal to both RPG and Action games lovers.

Well the bad scenario you have to face is 0 Kids.
But the good news is that our community have also found a solution to this kind of problem. If you want kids to trick or treat badly you could even try to create a community wide treat or trick event where children go around a few place/neighbor and do trick or treat. In that way you guys will have at least 100+ children ringing your doorbell. And it work on my neighborhood, always been getting 50+ every Halloween.
And every children who participate in that event could have fun and such.
And I also suggest that you could call some school to do such event also.

Now we're in the music and art stage! I've also got substantial base engine programming done. I'm using RMXP but basically redefining the crap out of it.

Haha for our game the tileset will just be a drawn picture, split up, you know, and then placed on the canvas. So no actual mapping, but I think parallax is what you call it?
Anyways, I've never worked with that before so we'll see how it goes xD
