Description

We've had a few game dev events in a row now with several more on the way later in the year, so let's take a little break with something a bit more chill!

The aim is to make a short, playable experience with up to 5 maps, taking place in any type of interior area (Cafes, aquariums, schools, museums, etc). Submissions must be more of an interactive exploration sim than a game.

If you need an example for this type of game, check out Apartment Simulator on the site, it won't take any longer than 5 minutes of your time.

RULES
- Max 5 maps. Max map size 50x50 each. No minimum size.
- No gameplay (cutscenes, battles, endings, puzzles, etc) but small interactions are okay.
- Your maps must all be indoor areas.
- You do not need game pages for this event.
- No minimum playtime required.
- Your entry must be made entirely within the event's timeframe.
- Any engine, any resources. If your engine isn’t tile based, or you’re making a 3D entry, take the 50x50 map size limit as an approximate guideline. I’ll be lenient as long as what you make is within reason.
- This is a solo event, and teams are not allowed.

REWARDS
  • Somewhere Nice - 40MS
Submit an entry to the event.

  • Guest Rooms - 20MS
Play and provide feedback on other entries during or after the event.

aquatorrent, I was looking for a way to display text without the need for RMXP because I don't have it. And found one: add the arial font to my Wine install. But your script is very useful in these situations:
1) Players who forget to install the custom font used by a RMXP game
2) Players who can't install a custom font because they don't have Windows administrator rights or are on Linux
3) Provide a fail safe text display

So, I think you should go to the RPG Maker XP page and add your useful script to the scripts.

Thanks for your nice comment about Rat Deck.
G* gives download issues. Could you upload your file to another file sharing site like fileconvoy.

Now that the Wine font display issue is solved, I was able to read the iterations in your house. There are some neat ideas like the miniature Lego house and plenty of references to gaming, pokemon, some programming and a oddly located toaster. Our hero can walk over the table with the "1001 Gameshark cheats" and also walk over the window. It's a cool idea to be able to put sunglasses on and off. You could even change the interactions when sunglasses are on or off.

whoops, i guess i misunderstand again, my bad. there are actually tutorials for it here and here, but i think i can make a tutorial for making linux build later in the weekend.
The solution in the tutorials seems to simply look for several fonts that might be installed. Such solution would fail if, like me, none of the fonts are installed. Your solution is much better because you specify a fallback font AND provide that font in your game folder "Fonts".

This weekend I'll try to make wine play RMXP midi so we'll have a more elegant solution than forcing the game maker to convert all the music tracks into ogg.

The TM is for Totally Magical.

I did the thing! I played all the games!

Marrend - Derram Station
Looking for love in all Derram places!
...sorry.
Is it cozy? I don't know, but I sure want to know this guy's story.

Scourge - Winter's Night
There's nothing more cozy than a warm inn on a harsh winter night! I even found Gideon's Bible!

Irog - Rat Deck
Passability is a little bit cumbersome on this one. Also, as a piano technician, I promise you that the fact that the rat does not immediately inhabit the piano and make a nest is highly unrealistic! Anyway, I could find absolutely nothing to do here but wander around; no interactions that I could find. Interesting. Being able to change the keybinding would definitely make this game more interesting but I'm not brave enough to try it, especially with as easy as it is to get stuck.

Ulevo - Checkar Building
I always love the Earthbound artstyle. I wish there was some music. Also, you probably should have specified the American release year of Earthbound.

Frogge - Cozy Aquarium
Oh, this is so pretty! I love it! Gasps in horrorYOU PUT THE CLOWNFISH AND THE SEA ANEMONES IN SEPERATE TANKS??? You...you know they have a symbiotic relationship, right? Anyway, this is beautiful, I love it! And the music is wonderful! Oh, it's such a shame you ran out of time to make all the fish.

Lavendersiren - ahouse
There's no place like home! This is so cute! Also, why is there a fish in your bed?

Aquatorrent - HouseMap
Another one who stayed home! Can't argue. There really is no place like home. BUT DUDE! AT LEAST PUT YOUR LEFTOVERS IN THE FRIDGE! COME ON!!! Love the music!

Starmage - Gigi: The Egyptian Castle
Be real with me. Now that I've eaten the food, drank all the stuff, and slept in the bed, I'm totally cursed, now, aren't I? The mapping and the music is just perfect!

Soulrain - Trainsim
I definitely had way more fun with this than I should have been able to!

JustAShyDoge - A_Room
Very pleasant with nice music! All the amenities of life.

CrazyBabi - CB_CozyPlace
Your cozy place is a ransacked hospital with people that you murder the moment you interact with them. I don't know what else to say about that! Good mapping! Appropriate music!

Tau - Cozy
Oh, this is so pretty! I love it! Is this Mack? Those wierd corners make me think it's Mack. And the music is great!

I laughed out loud at that one ! Initially, the game was supposed to have other rats scattered around the deck that would start to follow you. If I expand the project, I'll make sure several rats come out of the piano ;-) Sorry for the lack of interactions, I still have to write proper code to handle interactions in my game engine. You can change the keybinding from the main menu option "Pest control". This will create a file "Settings.bin" in the "Common" folder of the game. You can restore the default keybinding by deleting this "Settings.bin" file.
Thank you so much aquatorrent and pianotm for playing my entry! And I'm glad you guys enjoyed the Egyptian theme and interactions ^_^

ah, i see. Well, i already made a draft for it, but if you manage to figure out how to make wine play it it would be better as i dont have a clear solution for it. Searching only leads me to different results and i'm not sure if they'll work like that. I saw one result that tells to run it in proton, though. Maybe it will help?
