Also because RPG Maker 2003 is NOT public domain, and we don't want to have all us old schoolers out of this event!

Well the tool used doesn't have to be public domain. You can create a weird art-thing using Photoshop and public domain images. Photoshop isn't public domain but the resulting image could still be released to the public domain if the person making it wanted it to.
the engine for every single RM game isn't. this rule is getting more and more stupid!
Yeah that is true. However it only says that stuff like art and music has to be public domain. Not the actual game. So I suppose that it's only the assets that have to be released freely to everyone. No wait it does say materials.

But even Open Source software isn't Public Domain. It's just... Open...
in that case i find i must return to my original point: that's a ridiculous distinction to make and is bordering on a double standard!

Just use your best judgment! If you're not using Secret of Mana rips you're probably fine! =)
I just don't like the word public domain. Since it (as I've said) means something very very specific (in fact the US Public Domain doesn't exist in most of Europe)

It would be a lot better to have a line that goes something like "It goes without saying that you should have permission to use any graphics, music or other materials in your game that aren't yours."

I'm guessing that's what you actually mean. I don't understand why the public domain had to be brought into it (as well "having rights to"... you can't have rights to something that is in the public domain. That's sort of the point of the PUBLIC domain)

can't make a bad game if you don't finish any games

The ultimate irony is that my incomplete (where the fuck has Rei gotten off to?) Game Chill entry fits into this theme better than the last one. *shakes fist at the gods of fate*

The not as poignant but still notable irony is that my incomplete Action 52 entry fits into this theme better than the last one.
I told you the theme should have been crass, cynicism and apathy!

Stop whining and just make a game!

Well the fact is that I just don't want to be part of a contest that will put whatever I make into the public domain. Or actually I wouldn't mind that. But I don't want to be part of a contest where the people hosting it doesn't really want to come out and say yay/nay on the public domain issue. (which if this was a bunch of slightly more evil people would mean that the public domain issue is some kind of yay and they will bastardize whatever is made for their own gain)

Basically everyone who will make something for this will automatically sign away all rights to artwork and other materials used in said game. (and if it is the US public domain it also means you don't have to credit the original author whenever you re-use the stuff that is in the public domain.)

I mean come on! How hard can it be to change the rules so that people don't have to give away all rights to what they make? Unless that's what you want to happen of course.

You sound like you've never been in a game making community before.
Just relax. I don't think rules interpretation will change the outcome of this event in any relevant way.
The rules say otherwise:
-All art, music, and materials used to create the game must be in the public domain! When it is made does not matter as long as you have the rights to it. Judges will favor original content over rips.

EDIT: Alright! Not anymore! Whoho!
Well the fact is that when everything in the game has to be public domain it implies that anything you make for the game has to be released into the public domain before it can be used in the game.

Uh alright. This kind of makes it a slight bit clearer :D
I've made a whole schedule to plan out how I am going to finish the game before deadline. I even created some monsters in paint. I'm taking this seriously. Good luck competing against me if all you are using this time for is argueing over a misunderstood rule. Don't ask me to explain the rule though, I have no idea.

In other words, just make a game.
