Description

Hello one and all and welcome to RMN's 9th (official ;p ) birthday! Woo!

Our beloved site is now (over) 9 years old - that's practically ancient in internet years! So let's get together and celebrate in the best way we know how!

Making games! :DDD

A bit over a week or so ago a topic was put up with a bunch of event ideas for the community to pick from. There were a few long-runners who seemed likely to win, a really good idea that Liberty will be stealing appropriating for a future event and a dark horse coming up from behind to steal the win.

There was drama, conflict, confusion - just a normal day on the site, really, but we eventually got there and this is it. Your chosen event.

The event in question is quite simple.

3 hours.

3 maps.

3 characters.

You start over the coming weekend, make your game and at the end, share what you have made with the community! It's easy as 1, 2, 3!

The rules are as follows:
- Event starts at midnight GMT on Friday (please adjust your site time to your timezone so that the event page will tell you the start/end times properly).
- You have 3 hours over the course of the weekend to completely make the game. That means 3 hours of development, folks, not a 3 hour long game!
- You must only have 3 whole characters in the game. This includes Player Characters or NPCs. 3 total. For example: you can have a Warrior, Princess and King; or Warrior, Black Mage, White Mage. That part is up to you.
- You may only have 3 maps total.
- All games must be added to the event page by the end of the event (Sunday Midnight GMT)
- Play games over Monday (which is actually the birthday date oops but let's celebrate then by sharing each others' games! :DDD )

!!!SUPER CHALLENGE!!!
If you feel like 333 is too easy, how about completing this Super Challenge? You will get a special badge~!
- 3 different monsters only
- 3 different skills only
- 3 different items only
- 3 different weapons only
- 3 different armours only
- 3 of these major challenges: 3 Message Boxes, 3 Pictures, 3 Scripts, 3 Sound Effects, 3 Window Skins, 3 Musical Tunes, 3 Word Title, 3 Battles, 3x3 Map Size (if not RM, 99x99 pixels works too)

(Note that for this challenge to have been met you must have 3 of these things - it won't count if you only have, say, 2 monsters in the game or only 1 item. There MUST be 3.)

There are two achievements up for grabs!

P-P-PARTY ANIMAL for participating and getting into the spirit of the birthday.
SUPER PARTY ANIMAL for completing the Super Challenge.

Here's the Stream of all the games:

Oh, yeah. There probably have been a few games that have had updates! Aside from orochi's game, I think I still need to re-download mjshi's, Novalux's, and... Mirak's, maybe?

*Edit: You'll have to forgive my absent-mindedness on this matter.

Just watched Liberty's stream.
I couldn't watch it live since I have an issue with flash, but I can watch the youtube videos in html5 once they are uploaded.

First of all, as said many times before, you do have a lovely accent. You seemed tired though.

You actually read my username right at 9:44, 10:52 and 10:55 :P

The title screen used 3 different languages. One is obviously English, Dois is Portuguese and Drei is German. You can read Dois kinda like "thoich". Enemy attacks are Zwei and Drei, 2 and 3 in German (enemy 1 was supposed to have an "Eins" attack but I forgot about it...). Items are Raz, Dwa and Trzy, also 1, 2 and 3 in Polish. Weapons are Um, Dois and Três - Portuguese. Armors are I, II and III - Roman numerals. Menu options are Uno, Dos and Trés - Spanish.

LOL at reading "Raz ?" as a question :P

Yeah, it would be fun to change the hero to the number of it's level, but it never crossed my mind during the 3 hours :P
The same goes for the "2" command not using 2 MP. Once I finished creating/editing the resources I was racing to get the game done, so I didn't even think about it. It would be pretty easy to adjust the MP levels and change the command to consume 2 MP, but at the time I didn't think about that LOL
Makes a lot of sense though.
Looking back I would also change "death" to be something else and only use the "?" and "!" characters for HP and MP and use other characters for the other stuff. As it is I end up repeating these characters and it gets confusing :P

Battles were set to wait from the start :)

I made it so it was easy to grind if needed, enemies drop healing items all the time to aid that.

Thanks for playing my game and commenting, Liberty.

I'd also like to thank Jeroen_Sol and CashmereCat for the nice comments during the stream :)
I'm getting to your game soon, Jeroen_Sol...

I went for the !!!SUPER CHALLENGE!!!
And did 5 of the major challenges: 3 Message Boxes, 3 Pictures, 3 Sound Effects, 3 Musical Tunes, 3 Word Title.

@Red_Nova:
I actually didn't have any difficulty in keeping all the friends alive. Perhaps I was just lucky with the criticals, haha.

@Sooz:
Your game left me asking "What... why?"
I have no idea what the point of that game was, but I had fun running around looking at description text :3

That was the point of the game. Congratulations! You win!

I'm thinking it's because I didn't touch the hit/evade ratio, so there's a decent chance attacks will miss as well as hit. Some people said their first run was a disaster, some otherwise. I suck at game dev in such a short time frame...

U-um... I mean... artistically, the statement I was trying to make was that growing older means that life can throw unpredictable curveballs at you, and some people can breeze through it without much trouble and others have to struggle and lose things they hold dear. Yeah! That's it! I'm totally not making any excuses for myself here. Nope.
My biggest mistake was trying to make an actual game, haha. I should have went nonsense silly. I hated it to death afterward and uploaded it in hopes that the three hour time frame gave it charm. I look back to it fondly now and especially since some of you said very kind words about it.

I like to think it also got me out of a small rut, for it forced me to go fast and not hesitate.

More Feedback for today:

Last Hope

- Nice splash screen and title screen, great use of colors and type font.
- Great atmosphere.
- Some sound effects (jump, menu) could be better chosen, since they break the atmosphere a bit by being so RTP generic.
- She makes step sounds! <3
- I can't read the letter if I'm standing north of it?
- For some reason the music stopped playing after a while in the first room.
- Text box graphics look great.
- Detailed small scale mapping, it looks really good!
- Is there a reason for the menu to show level and HP? I'm guessing you couldn't take them out?
- A bug, after I went into the basement, I read the letter and then walked left and then right and the letters appeared again and I was able to examine them again.
- I thought the bee sting excuse was lame :P
- When you leave the house, you can see every division for a brief moment.
- Great music selection!
- I guess there was no music inside the house on purpose so the dramatic effect when we left was greater. Nope, the village music also stopped after playing once :/
- I can walk over some stuff (i.e.: bucket) in the village, which I shouldn't.
- Is there anything to do in village at all? Or is it just a "corridor" for the next map?
- The foliage image in the village was a nice touch, as was the fog.
- Oh, so the shadow can kill you.
- Too bad it ends abruptly, but hey, 3 hours...
- This was quite an enjoyable little atmospheric game :)
Thank you for your review and for playing my game! I'm very happy that you enjoyed it although it wasn't that long... Like you said 3 hours weren't that long to make a well done game... And to be honest i didn't knew it would be that hard... I understimated the challenge ToT I thought that I could have done a very good game, with an entertaining story, good maps, etc... But the time wasn't enough! I spended all the time for the maps and then i noticed that there wasn't any time left for the story and eventing... ToT
I didn't even tested it!!! And there was a huuugeee bug in the previous version!!! Well, i think next time will be better... I hope it at least...
Thank you again for your feedback!

To answer some of your questions...
1. Yes, the village is only a "corridor" to the last map... I wanted actually something to happen, but... There wasn't any time left to do it! ToT
2. I think the bee's story was silly too, but... To be honest I didn't have ANY other ideas! The story should have been longer, but (another time, sooorryy) the time was up...

It's OK, Make_it_MagiK, game was great, specially for 3 hours! You did a great job ;)

Even more feedback:

Old Gun Dreamland

- I can't use the "Z" key?
- Saves are all slot 3! LOL :)
- I like the original graphics and I like the sound effects.
- TOP -> Hair, nice one.
- Also enjoy the way enemies fade when murdered.
- Gam is racist, evry char is white.
...but iddalai, it's a monochromatic game, if characters were any other color you wouldn't see them.
Hum... that's a good point. (this was a joke).
- I like that it's a side scroller.
- The game is pretty trippy, I liked the ending effects and the battles were balanced enough for 3 hours :)

Crypt Challenge

- Nice music selection.
- I like how skills all strike 3 times since that was the theme of the event :)
- I can walk over some stuff I shouldn't in the 2nd map (i.e.: pillars).
- Mapping could be better, but it's not too bad for 3 hours.
- Is it supposed not to have any random battles?
If so, I kinda like it that I can explore without battles.
- Strange, I can open the chest on the top right corner, but I can't open the one to the south because the hero tells me "he doesn't have time for that", then there's another chest to the right side but I can't get to it since there's a rock in the way.
- At first I thought there was a flaw in the mapping, but it's actually a secret passage! Right? Now I can get to the chest, nice.
- So I can only open the south chest after examining the door? That's not very good design :/
Maybe the chest should appear after examining the door and there was a text box telling us to look for it, that would be better than bumping into a chest we couldn't open.
- In the battle for the south chest the enemies are too big and half of them gets cut off screen.
- Oh, you can examine chests after opening them! Cool, I like that details.
- Battles are a bit too easy, enemies pose no threat, but I undersand balancing is hard in 3 hours. Hero skills should deal less damage to allow enemies to at least attack once.
- Nice twist at the end, specially the name thing, there was a hint in her status screen too ;)
- The last boss attacked me for 9 HP each round when I was attacking for 700 x3 HP. I also never needed to use items. This means the game could be harder.
- Hey, nice little game, dragonsprit99!

Three's a Crowd

- No music?
- Wow, this went by really fast :P
You were late to the event and had little time, so I see why it's quick.
- I managed to keep everyone alive on the first try, lucky :)
- I loved the concept of each skill killing the character using it and the story implications it had.
- 3 hours is a b***h to test, for some reason sometimes items and skills would just miss. Which sucked a bit.
- I see this concept working well with more and harder battles and a few more characters with different skills, but possibly no revives.
- I tried again, and true to the story, it gets that much harder when your friends go away.
- This has your type of game written all over it!
- Great concept, this would be fun to play in a larger scale (but not too large, like a 1 hour game), nice one, Red_Nova! :D

Rock Memo kNife

- ock emo k ife, huh? ;)
- Very creative healing item names.
- Man, kids grow fast nowdays, Aremen here has 9 years old and he's got this big ass beard! Oh, but he's a god, so that's ok.
- Nice reference to the 3 chars, during goblin dialog.
- I like the 3x3 maps, they're cute, you even put wall, which makes them look even nicer.
- Nothing like banne some sinners and bots after partying :P
- I liked this little game, the battles were balanced, didn't drag for too long, the names were cool, music was well chosen, and the references are totally RMN. Nice one! :D

Summer's Bounty Expedition

- This game looks gorgeous! I love the graphics and the text box skin and all of it.
- Woah, you can actually fall on pits, that's rare to see in these games :)
- The game says specific tiles will be marked where you can use the slingshot, but while I figured out where to use the slingshot, I didn't notice the tile to be marked.
OK, so when the tile is checkered on plain tiles it's noticeable, but when it's a plain tile on checkered tiles it's hard to notice it.
- I like the different take on battles, it reminds me of "Choose Your Own Aventure Books".
- Tomb Raider, huh? ;)
- Also, nice saying the NPC found a poison resistant robe to explain how it could reach the door.
- Nice music.
- I got to the last room and got a game over, is there anything else or...?
From que overall quality of the game I expected to be a third armor that would protect me from the dark magic, but there wasn't.
- Nice little game, creative gameplay and really nice presentation!

Stormblade 2: Sunsword :P :P :P

- Mapping is better than last time, you improved.
- Music is nice but a bit too sad.
- The dialog was funny.
- The questions were well chosen.
- I failed 2, who the hell is Clyve!? :P
- Not much to say, but I liked it, some question were fun and had me thinking!
It's just like the title says: Stor... hum... Birthday Quiz 2.
It's a quiz that deals with RMN birthday, nuff' said ;)

Destroy Darklord

- Does Mr. Hero have a lazy eye?
- Game lags for me. Not your fault though.
- I liked the silly dialog.
- I also liked choosing a "path" at the start.
- I went with the mix of magic and physical at the start and died. So then I tried Warrior and the boss had no chance. Tried Mage just to check out the spells.
- Well balanced, I guess each path has a different difficulty.
- Interesting skills that work well with each other.
- Little game with fun gameplay :)

Sword of Kings

- Interesting title screen.
- You can ignore the sword and go south on the first map.
- A lot of times I can't jump over spikes.
- I can't save when I want?
- So spikes don't take HP, they increase a counter that kills me eventually? So how do I know when I'm about to die?
- There's text overflow.
- I think you imported the enemy wrong since parts of it are missing.
- The battle drags on forever, you could've worked with shorter numbers to make it faster.
- I didn't get to the lake, because exploring the labyrinth felt like a drag.
- I basically used shift to move around and that seemed to help evade most spikes.
- Could use some gameplay balance, but it was a nice game for 3 hours.

Marrend played a few more games! Feedback ensues!

Birthday Murder Party
I love how this game, straight up, has Caz admit to doing various nefarious deeds. How can you choose Liberty, with what Caz says?
Poor Nesssy!

Summer Bounty Expedition
There's this one treasure chest that I can't figure out how to get to in the middle-left of the main map, and the cultist always kills me. I'm not sure if having whatever is in that chest will help at all, but, oh well.
Somebody wanted a Wand of Blasting, though!

Alice
Interesting little game, even if the maps were a bit on the empty side. Three characters would do that, though.
I largely suspect the forest loops in on itself. I could be wrong!

Stormblade 2: Sunsword
Darigaaz, I sucked so hard at this quiz. Then again, I didn't look up anything either, so, maybe, 4/9 isn't too bad as far as off-hand info goes.

She Had Fun
I'd almost suggest getting rid of TP Lust entirely, and just have skills cost MP Love. On the other hand, it might not matter in the end.
I'm a bit peeved that Harold's ability can miss, though.
Aside: This is, officially, the first MV game I've played.

Yup, I thought about only using one but then the other bar would be pointless.
Yeah, the biggest issue with the game is the miss/hit chance... >.<

Sword of Kings

Hide
- Interesting title screen.

Thanks! I made it in 30 seconds.

- You can ignore the sword and go south on the first map.

This was deliberate. Without the sword, you won't be able to finish the game. Remember earlier in this thread, my inspiration was old NES platformers that were hard as shit.

- A lot of times I can't jump over spikes.

This is a problem with detection. I put the trigger at different distances from spikes to make some easier to anticipate. What's happening is that your character won't jump because he'll land on the spike event. This means you need to move a square closer.

- I can't save when I want?

Saving kind of defeats the purpose of the spikes being able to kill you in three hits.

- So spikes don't take HP, they increase a counter that kills me eventually? So how do I know when I'm about to die?

I didn't have time to come up with something.

- There's text overflow.

Yeah, I know.

- I think you imported the enemy wrong since parts of it are missing.

I...didn't have that problem. Neither did Liberty. Can you post a screencap? Don't play this game through again. It's deliberately obnoxious. Just open it in the editor and do a test battle.

- The battle drags on forever, you could've worked with shorter numbers to make it faster.

Really? When I playtested with the Sword in the Stone, it only took a minute and a half. When I play tested with Excalibur, I could end the fight in three hits? I didn't encounter a scenario where the fight would drag on.

- I didn't get to the lake, because exploring the labyrinth felt like a drag.

Yeah, I thought that might be a thing. That's what happens when you deliberately make a game so bad nobody wants to play it. It kind of bums me out because you missed the Lady in the Lake animation (yes, even deliberately making the game so you'd decide it wasn't worth it, it bums me out). Couldn't you open it in the editor and control/cheat your way to the lake?

- I basically used shift to move around and that seemed to help evade most spikes.

Yes. I noticed this too! I liked that I could do that because it made the game seem that much shittier.

- Could use some gameplay balance, but it was a nice game for 3 hours.

If I could figure out how to get RM2K3 to let you jump into spikes instead of jump detection treating events as impassible objects...but then, it'd let you jump into walls, and that's no good. Can't think of a real way to fix that. As for Lot, he's really balanced for a fight with the Sword in the Stone, and not for anything else. You can't fight him unless you have the Sword in the Stone, and he won't recognize if you only have Excalibur (which is proper to the lore, since Excalibur isn't the Sword in the Stone, and therefore not the symbol of the king, but that has nothing to do with gameplay balance.).

There are two cheats built in game. Activating the torch that's to the right of the Sword in the Stone will increase the death variable for the spike traps to nine instead of three. The torch on the left is a bandage fountain (bandages reset the counter.).

@Kloe: I'm not terribly familiar with MV, obviously, but, is it not possible to make an ability be "Certain Hit"? Eh, maybe it was a three-hour-limit thing.

As an aside, I was curious as to how well I did with Tunger's quiz from last year. Found the post, but, to the detail in question:

author=Marrend
I expect to fail this thoroughly, to be honest.

9/10 on Events and Contests! Not bad!

5/10 on RMN Community! Dariggaz, that sucked so hard. Though, the question about which topic Liberty locked to troll the community had me confused. I would have to look at those choices again, because I probably I'm sure it meant to reference the screenshot topic, but it wasn't... oh, crap. I think it might have been on the list, but I was probably thinking it was referring to the new topic, rather than the old one! NEVER MIND!

8/10 on Name the Game! It probably helps that I played, or knew about... most of the games mentioned.

3/10 on Site Rules and Features! UUUUUGGGGHHH. That hurt. A lot.

It's understandable. Also I'd like to point out that, in your previous post, the "quotes" were screwed around here because you used an original type of code: "/yeah" :P

Also, there's 1 pixel below his right arm that should also be invisible.

Maybe it felt like it dragged on for me because I had to hit "Attack" over and over, while my HP would decrease and get near 200 (which actually takes some time), then use a potion and do the same thing again and again.

author=pianotm

I noticed there's 3 entries to the lake, however the only one people will find without hints in the one near it, I'd say.

I watched the animation and battled again with the true sword. It's nice how you added the lore to such a small game (with the guy ignoring you if you don't have the sword in the stone).

The animation looks a bit too slow. But the pixel art works and looks really nice. My suggestion would be to use "battle animations" for these things, that way you can make more fluid animations using pixel movement, and you could still use the pixel art you made.

Unfortunately, no I was an even bigger asshole than that. You have to find all three before one will open.

Thanks! I've been planning two Arthurian games (one as a loose remake of Origin's "Arthur: The Quest for Excalibur" and one as an original retelling of the 13th century Spanish romance, "Remora and Orlando" or "The Knight of the Blue Surcoate".). When I made this animation, I thought it looked a lot better than I expected, and this would help me make it look better.

In RMXP it uses C instead of Z. Didn't mean to be racist "orz, just went to max contrast and monochrome graphics (actually the system colored text is blue so screw me! didn't noticed! "orz).

And yeah, I wanted a trippy game, and wanted to use all pictures for the ending with SOM AMAZZIN IFFECS!.

Know what I just remembered? I have to give feedback! I plaed gems :^D! Hav a buncha hir on ma sak. Lemme grabbz.

Besiege Wrong sack!
Birthday Murder Partay - Frogge. Ribbit ribbit (I knew from the start that it was Liberty, after all she's the most murderous of all in this place. Hadn't to say anything, she's coming for me!).
Big Minnie in the Tower - Riderx40. I really really really enjoyed the battles, and the animations are awesome! Also the cute small characters.
Iddy's 9th Birthday in RMN - iddalai. Never thought about how difficult was for a 1 to beat a 3, this is why 1 is never higher than 3! But in your game, by giving a 1 the power to grind other 1s... This 1 is going to infinity! Actually to level 99... Damn.
Rock Memo kNife - Jeroen Sol. Rock paper scissors with equipment. I buffed as much as I could my knife because of my murderous intentions. But it was fun :^D! I'm now a champ!
The quiz thing - TungermanU. 4/9, but it was fun! :^D It was interesting, learnt some random things about the site.
Savage Sea Crusade - psywombats. The image of a 9-armed starfish is now burnt into my mind, I actually have to thank you for that because now I can laugh at my please! Mwauhauhauhauhau! Really cool thing for such a short time.
She surely had fun with her lovey dovey - Kloe. I wonder how stalked Harold feels now after you recruited him for your game but nevermind. And I know you two aren't going to do pancakes in home! I know the birds and bees thing!
Sword of Kings - pianotm. Yep, the sword could be missed, wonder how you do against the bad guy without it xD. I don't know what the magical concoctions were for but I believe I would had a better time if I drank them all before the battle. Oh well! Still beaten it. I'm now king! And Champ! And better than a 3!
The Blue Hood - Marrend. I loved the mechanic of charging and that. Though maybe was a little overpowered, poor thugs can't do a sheet to me. Kek! Serves them right!
The Colosseum - aquaricorn. I hate that Thunderous Smite missed 90% of the time for me, and didn't even do so much damage! "orz But it was fun! :^D

Still have quite a lot of games to play, but I'll be doing that...
@Jeroen_Sol: Nice game, unique and tactical battles. Reminded me of the combat in Helen's Mysterious Castle.

@Sooz: I knew that this was going to be one hell of a ride from the moment I entered the title screen (with the Star Wars theme blasting at full volume). I love lobsters and it made me so happy that the lobster found his crown again. All hail Lobster King!

@Frogge: I'm not sure what happened, but I found it pretty funny. RM cameos FTW! The game had a severe lack of puns, which I found rather disappointing, coming from you the punmeister himself.

@Unity: It was simple and fun! It contained a lot of content IMO for a game that was only made in three hours. Good job!

He'll ignore you if you don't have it. I mean, really. He'll turn his back on you and everything. Total silent treatment.

The potions were for your final fight, in case you're HP got too low. Scrolls of Merlin raised your stats. Bandages reset your spike trap death counter.
I haven't checked this thread in a while due, but I'm thankful for all the feedback on my game (but I can't be bothered to find the individual posts that critiqued my game and quote them. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

Anyway, it was somehow the first game I've ever finished, since I usually lose interest in my games after about an hour due to lack of motivation/ideas. As far as this game was concerned, I ran into many problems, but in the end, I am happy with how it turned out.

I was, however, disappointed with how the mapping turned out (especially the final boss' map), but I am happy with how the map in the cutscene turned out, at least.

I had fun designing the enemies in the game with my personal favorite being Bad Dinosaur. Actually, his name was originally "Bad Dragon" (which I assume some people here know about), but after I mapped out the cave, I realized that I intended to use a dinosaur instead...so it became Bad Dinosaur.

The only thing I have never actuallu learned how to utilize well in RPG Maker is the battle system...I don't know how to structure stats and calculations and whatnot, so I do need to invest into that sometime.

So there's my feedback on the game and its development. After seeing how well this turned out, I plan on entering future contests, since this format seems to fit my style of development, and I also wanted to make a name of myself instead of being a lurker for a year (I'm pretty sure I've lurked here for at least a year, but I don't know).

tl;dr In the end, my game was a little too ambitious for the time frame specified, and that kind of messed up the game later on, but I'm okay with that.
