Description

Hello one and all and welcome to RMN's 9th (official ;p ) birthday! Woo!

Our beloved site is now (over) 9 years old - that's practically ancient in internet years! So let's get together and celebrate in the best way we know how!

Making games! :DDD

A bit over a week or so ago a topic was put up with a bunch of event ideas for the community to pick from. There were a few long-runners who seemed likely to win, a really good idea that Liberty will be stealing appropriating for a future event and a dark horse coming up from behind to steal the win.

There was drama, conflict, confusion - just a normal day on the site, really, but we eventually got there and this is it. Your chosen event.

The event in question is quite simple.

3 hours.

3 maps.

3 characters.

You start over the coming weekend, make your game and at the end, share what you have made with the community! It's easy as 1, 2, 3!

The rules are as follows:
- Event starts at midnight GMT on Friday (please adjust your site time to your timezone so that the event page will tell you the start/end times properly).
- You have 3 hours over the course of the weekend to completely make the game. That means 3 hours of development, folks, not a 3 hour long game!
- You must only have 3 whole characters in the game. This includes Player Characters or NPCs. 3 total. For example: you can have a Warrior, Princess and King; or Warrior, Black Mage, White Mage. That part is up to you.
- You may only have 3 maps total.
- All games must be added to the event page by the end of the event (Sunday Midnight GMT)
- Play games over Monday (which is actually the birthday date oops but let's celebrate then by sharing each others' games! :DDD )

!!!SUPER CHALLENGE!!!
If you feel like 333 is too easy, how about completing this Super Challenge? You will get a special badge~!
- 3 different monsters only
- 3 different skills only
- 3 different items only
- 3 different weapons only
- 3 different armours only
- 3 of these major challenges: 3 Message Boxes, 3 Pictures, 3 Scripts, 3 Sound Effects, 3 Window Skins, 3 Musical Tunes, 3 Word Title, 3 Battles, 3x3 Map Size (if not RM, 99x99 pixels works too)

(Note that for this challenge to have been met you must have 3 of these things - it won't count if you only have, say, 2 monsters in the game or only 1 item. There MUST be 3.)

There are two achievements up for grabs!

P-P-PARTY ANIMAL for participating and getting into the spirit of the birthday.
SUPER PARTY ANIMAL for completing the Super Challenge.

Here's the Stream of all the games:

Destroy Darklord- Does Mr. Hero have a lazy eye?
- Game lags for me. Not your fault though.
- I liked the silly dialog.
- I also liked choosing a "path" at the start.
- I went with the mix of magic and physical at the start and died. So then I tried Warrior and the boss had no chance. Tried Mage just to check out the spells.
- Well balanced, I guess each path has a different difficulty.
- Interesting skills that work well with each other.
- Little game with fun gameplay :)

- He's a derp like that.

- More than likely MV is to blame. I still don't know how a 2D game engine could be that poorly optimized but that's besides the point.

- Thanks. I didn't really care that much about the writing of this game. xD

- I'd say Mage is the easiest (if not for the fact that you can use one spell to destroy him easily), and Spellblade is the hardest as it's the only one that doesn't have a recovery option, outside of the item you are given at the start. I also really rushed the playstyle tips for each class, so that could also be why you had a hard time with the non-warrior classes (or did you actually beat him with the mage set?).

Thanks!

I just tried the Mage one to see how is was, I didn't attempt to beat it.

You're welcome!

Five more feedbacks for this thread! I know, I know, it should be a multiple of three. Like, nine, because THEME. Anyway...

Three's a Crowd
I Apologized to Haley in the 2nd battle (she fell via combat damage). Both she and L'Arc were at 1 HP for the final battle. Which was defeintly was a bit too close for comfort!
I find it interesting that I basically couldn't be defeated with the last fight, and that the Acid Bottle... didn't seem to reduce that enemy's HP by half?
The Fire Bottle missed entirely, though. Awkward.

Sword of Kings
Definetly a frustrating experience, like it's supposed to be.
Was this made with the "3 Message Boxes" challenge? Or was it more of a time issue to not have messages saying what was obtained from the various treasure chests? I'm suspecting a continuation of the sub-theme of "HARD MODE: ENABLED" the latter.

GAME IN THREES
I'm not sure what's up with this game. It asks for a "keys.txt" in the "Game root" directory?
On a lark, I opened this in the editor. I'm not really sure what's up with all the file-checks, but, I created an empty "verified.txt" to skip all that. Damn it, I'm here to play this game, not some odd out-of-game fetch-quest!
I'm not sure I get this combat engine, even after playing this game.

Crystal Fight Time
Darigaaz, it's a Suikoduel! Sort of!
I think I managed this more with luck than anything else.

A Temple Near the Sun
Apparently, I'm going the super-crazy route of assisting niether Goddess, and going it alone.
Kinda wish I could save before making the choice. Or after.
Yeah, kinda figured I'd die. Since I have to re-do the whole intro... yeah, I'm done with this.

Aw, but that meta-minigame was half the fun xD

As for the combat, skill damage varied based on enemy "mood". You had to read the statements to figure it out, or just randomly test skills. For example, if the enemy was happy, it received a buff against Dark element attacks. If it was sad, it received a Dark element weakness.

Yup. BTW, did you see my feedback?

EDIT: the last feedback for the day:

Savage Sea Crusade

- That title screen tho... :P
- Starfish with arms LOL
- 2000/2003 RTP music <3
- "You are a reject starfish with no friends" quotable as f**k! It's like a snappy comeback.
- Most of the dialog and choices is genuinely funny.
- The snail killed me, then I found out I could save *facepalm*
- Then I wanted to try again, but the game froze on the title screen :/
- Do you realise this game would become famous if a well known youtuber played it? Do you? It would.
...
I don't know if that was compliment.
- Some bug during the end, I got this "Congratulations you hav" and no more text. Is there missing text? Or was it a joke?
- I actually laughed (as in making audible sounds) a few times, playing this, really fun short visual novel! :D

The Blue Hood

- Ooooh, super hero story!
- Blue Hood IS a nice super hero name.
- Forget about Blue Hood... Montford has the real powers! He can teleport!
- Oh, so you can use Guard to absorb!
- Well, if you kill the side enemies and leave only Dergon, he will use Absorb over and over again and I can't absorb anything unless I attack. Which actually makes for some interesting gameplay.
- I enjoyed these battles, too bad I only figured out how they worked on the boss...
It's a fun idea to absorb attacks as MP and use that power for fuel stronger attacks.
- Smart way to use the 3 text box limit.
- Why does the save menu open after I beat the boss?
- I'd like to see a bigger game with this gameplay.
- Short, but fun game!

Thou Art Hero

- Great dialog at the start, nothing quite like Evilbad.
- And it's all 3 words at a time!
- I like the item/equips/skill names.
- Ah, oldschool RPG gameplay :)
- Also the character mover while in place, nice throwback.
- I thought I could only get fights in the worldmap since I got only fights for a while, but then I also got items and gold. Are there different % for each event?
- Good use of slowed down/fast RTP music.
- Last boss has a bit too much HP.
- 3 skills right? What was the third? Hits?
- I really like the simple gameplay.
- I enjoyed this game quite a bit, reminded me of Dragon Quest with a silly story, great work! :)

No, I must've missed it in the twenty-some pages this event has. But I searched through your posts, and I found it!

author=iddalai
- Can't get that treasure on top of a cliff in the desert, I even tried climbing the green stuff. In fact none of the supposedly climbable green stuff works.

Yeah, that was fixed in the v2 update, and you played mine pretty early, so it was probably bugged. I just put trees down randomly, and I guess I blocked the path somewhere, somehow xD

author=iddalai
- Is there and ending? Is it possible to get everything or change something?

Nope, as the game mentions, you can't get everything, or even see everything, in a playthrough. There isn't really an ending, either. It's just a little 3-minute time-waster of a game, and I spent too long on other things to actually give the game an, er... well, plot.

author=iddalai
- For some reason the game still told me I killed things when I didn't and the gold I collected never appeared, the text box says somthing like "here's how much you got", but never tells me how much I got.

"Here's how much you got" was also fixed in the V2 update, but the killing things is based on a built-in variable called "@battle_count" in the core engine scripts somewhere, so I didn't really have time to change it to check for if someone escaped the battle or not. What it really does is count how many battles you got into.

author=iddalai
- The sad music makes me think there's something more to this game.

You're probably thinking too much into it, haha ;P
Er, yes, of course, I mean, the game runs much deeper than a mere mortal as yourself could imagine...

author=iddalai
- A really creative way to tackle this challenge, specially like I was the third character.

I've been inside so much that even looking outside hurts my eyes xD The sky is just so... blinding. So is the sidewalk, actually, everything in general is just way too bright. Though it's definitely not something to be proud of, but I thought it was something interesting to include.

Anyway, thanks for playing and for the detailed feedback!

Why does the save menu open after I beat the boss?

I always make sure to allow a "clear game" save if for no other reason than to allow players to refer to the time-stamp included on the save file for how long it took. Maybe this wasn't necessary for this game, given how short it is, and the time-constraints in general, but, there ya go.

author=iddalai
Forget about Blue Hood... Montford has the real powers! He can teleport!

I mostly thought it would be awkward if he just stood there and said nothing after he said his piece. Though, I do like me some teleportation abilities!

author=iddalai
I'd like to see a bigger game with this gameplay.

This, I'm not sure about. As an experiment with transmuting damage into MP restoration, it's current incarnation is probably fine. As an experiment with abilities that cost all of a character's MP, with the damage/healing based on how much MP there is to spend, I can absolutely see me doing that again.

*Edit: Oh, uh, orochii! Thanks for playing! Yeah, I totally did not forget that you commented on my entry! Right, let's go with that!

Nice to get a bit of confirmation~ But yeah, it was a neat little game. Good job!
So... I finally got to watch the stream.

I'm rather glad it turned out as intended XD
Frustration for ALL

That said, I found two minor bugs thanks to that:
-> Sunder wasn't working properly (it's supposed to be (x=1-a.hp_rate), which *might* explain why it's a bit more unfair difficult than I planned it to be).

-> She isn't supposed to drop a Yearning Heart anymore. I forgot to untick this in the database...

It might be a bit late, but I'll put links to a fix here anyway: 3n3_R05L, as well as a "Casul" version for, well, "Casuls": 3n3_Casul.

Ok, I'd like to thank everyone who replied to my feedback.
...and tell those who didn't to go screw themselves!

Man, after playing all these MV games I can tell I'm never gonna play another MV game ever. They lag too much on my PC, to the point where they're unplayable.

The last of the feedback:

The Colosseum

- I can't comment much on this game since I couldn't play it much even though I wanted. Certain MV games lag a lot on my PC, some lag so much it renders them unplayable.
- I liked the music selection.
- I also liked the skill selection.
- I was enjoying the simple story.
- Mapping could be a bit better in the colosseum, it was too square and empty.
- Battles lagged so much I had to stop playing, not your fault though!

Time Travelers Three

- I like the custom systems, like the title screen and small text boxes.
- I like how it uses 3 in everything, even attacks!
- Story is confusing at first. Actually it's confusing throughout :P but I guess that's the point, not knowing exactly what is happening.
- Music is nice and atmospheric, plus RTP remix music :)
- Also, Restore heals very little HP which makes it useless since the enemy attacks for the same or more damage. And it also restores the enemy!? Wow, this skill sucks.
- Mapping could be more detailed, at this moment it feels big and empty.
- I like that when I lose a battle I can retry.
- After I retried the second boss I found a bug, the boss now only had 1 form, so once I beat the first form he died and never transformed.
- You could've made the battle backgrounds move, it would fit the theme.
- Battle balance reminds me of old SaGa games and such, since they can be really hard if you don't know what you're doing or really easy when you do know.
- LOL at the name of the last boss!
- I got a Plastic Key, have no idea where to use it. Oh, it opens the last boss door, I thought the treasures were optional.
- I can walk over the top of the pillars in the 3rd map.
- The battles could use some more balancing, but 3 hours so it's ok... :P
- All in all I enjoyed this little game, characters had a fleshed out personality for such a short game, I liked the custom stuff, the 1 line text boxes looke great, fun little game! :)

Triple Trinity Trouble

- Had to add RTP and the "FullPackageFlag=1".
- The graphics are awesome, as expected from DE.
- I liked the music and sound effects.
- I like how all items come in 3, and how 3 is used in HP/MP and other stuff.
- So I have to kill the 2nd monster so I can get the best weapon (if he explodes he doesn't drop items).
- The last boss is very hard if you don't kill the 2nd monster.
- I guess I played the old version of the game since there's no victory screen.
- Battles are balanced enough for 3 hours.
- Story is good enough for 3 hours.

ZCKJLkljsajsdklfuh - gamebreaking bug, can't play the game after beating the first enemy.

HaroldVSslime RMN 9th

- Cute little game.
- Mapping could use some work.
- Battles were balanced enough for 3 hours.
- I loled at the battle music since it's so epic for a slime.
- Ha! The reference to the infamous beans...
@iddalai> How so? Is it crashing or something?

I probably should export it with RTP and delete it rather than trying to add, what is needed. Haven't been around RMs for almost a year, so I'm the one to blame.

I plaid your Uno, Zwei, Nhatu game a it was fairly enjoyable and difficult, yet balanced. Haven't finished is as most of the games these days, still I managed to notice some surprisingly nice esthetics given actors were numbers. The sound was pleasant to.
I saw your analysis of languages used and it was quite an interesting one. However I missed whether they are a personal reference of any type. Your roots or languages you can speak with. I don't wanna my push you, to reveal anything, I'm curious, thats all.

I beat the first enemy and all enemies die (they probably use the same switch) and become impassable corpses, so I can't move over to the next bit of map to progress the game.

No, I only speak 2 languages fluently, English and Portuguese.
But I knew enough of the other languages to know the first 3 numbers :P
I picked those languages since they could be written using English characters and were different enough from each other.

I played five more of them~

@Liberty:
I don't think I understood what the story entirely was, but it was interesting how there was no dialogue and it was communicated entirely via balloon icons. I got lost in the dungeon for awhile, too, but the dungeon-crawling aspect of it was fun.

@ZiggyMcBacon:
It was a fairly short run-through. I must say, I felt those battles with the slimes were balanced very well. Harold(?) was taking enough HP damage so that it didn't feel too lax, but not too much so that I had to scramble to recover health.

@Frogge:
You left a save file in the game folder! There were so many great lines of dialogue, though. Some of my favorites:

"???: Btw we can't have more than 3 characters so I'm actually one of you"
"Caz: What a coincidence I was at the parking lot trying to kidnap you two"
"Caz: Yeah don't mind the hole I just use it to hide the bodies of my victims"

Hmmm I wonder who it is xD
It was so intentionally bad it ended up being really good.

@Marrend:
oops I should not have wasted all my MP on killing that goon
I had no idea how to get my MP back after that so I ended up looking into game files and... well. So, guarding gives back MP? I ended up trying it out and guarding is so OP xD

The game ended up becoming something like that one... (long explanation incoming)

you know, the one where you hold your hands up to load the gun, and you use that to shoot the gun later on, but you can cross your arms into an x to guard? I don't know the name of that game, but you play it against someone else and it ends up with you being shot while you're loading the gun or vice versa or both the people end up shooting at the same time and it ends in a tie. That one. Yeah xD Not sure why the game asks me to save again at the end when I beat him, though.

I ended up needing to observe his attack pattern carefully to strike at the correct time, too.

@Novalux:
Very interesting premise. I got lost in the forest for a really long time, though xD If I was Eric(?), I would not trust a 'guide' who wanders around for so long claiming to know how to get somewhere, yet walking into at least ten dead-ends, possibly some more than once. I don't know, I had no idea where I was, haha.
What I got from the ending was "Ah, so Mark is pure of heart".

I make no excuses for how Guard works, mjshi. I also have no clue what you're talking about under the hide-tag. However, I do recall a mini-game of "chance" at the end of Metal Gear Solid 3 - Snake Eater. Though, in that instance, the gun that has the bullet is always on the one side/hand?

As for allowing players to save after the game's done? That's one of my trademarks, if you want to call it that. I do it so players can reference the time-stamp on the save-file for how long they have played. Maybe it wasn't necessary for this game, but, oh well!

And I'm not complaining xD It was an inventive way of using an oft-seen skill, it just could've been better explained as I had no idea the functionality existed.

I'm referencing to a childhood game, not a videogame, but one played similarly to rock-paper-scissors or 'chopsticks'. I don't know if it had a name, or if I was ever told it. I made a quick animation...

Hopefully my terrible-ness at drawing hands doesn't give you nightmares, haha...

Ah, I see. That makes sense. I was confused since it was a completely new thing that I've never seen any other games do. I suppose I've yet to play any of yours, Marrend. But being able to see the timestamp is pretty useful. 3 minutes, 10 seconds for me :D

This is an excellent point. In truth, I had no ideas how to relay that the functionality existed. Like, even if players read the readme ("But beware Dergon, for he, too, can absorb attacks into energy!"), there is no indication of how it is is possible to absorb energy. In fact, that statement might suggest a passive ability?
