Super RMN Bros. is a community event where everybody tries to make 2D Mario platformer levels and they all get put into one game: Super RMN Bros! The tool used for this is Super Mario Bros. X v1.2 Beta4, a PC Engine made to emulate the Mario games made on the NES and SNES. This event is to let everybody try out this new tool and see what we can make in two weeks in a genre everybody has played! Whip out those old Mario level drawing you made when you were eight! Live the dream of making your own Mario game! Show that RMNers can do more than just make RPGS!

Rules

  • The end of level marker is always a star. Each level can only have one star in it. Stars give a progress indicator throughout the game and for individual levels and since all levels will be available at the start of the game Stars are the best way for players to know what levels they've already done.
  • You can submit as many levels as you want as long as they fall within the rules.
  • Levels that don't meet a minimum level of quality will be rejected. Levels must be complete and all stars must be possible to acquire. Levels also need to be stable and not consistently crash the game. Excessively difficult levels that try to emulate the rage-inducing difficulty of Kaizo Mario or Super Mario Intrigue will also be rejected. This isn't meant to be about finding ways to infuriate the player and SMW rom hacks also have the benefit of save states, rewinds, and functional midpoints. Keep your level difficulty in check.
  • No custom music. Custom graphics are allowed.

What You Need to Participate

Super Mario Bros. X v1.2 Beta4, available at the bottom of the OP in the link. This is the latest version of SMBX with extra features that previous stable builds don't have. Make sure you download the correct version, the file size should be ~37.8MB. It has everything you need to get started from the player, the editor, and three sample worlds.

Submitting Your Levels

SMBX puts each level into its own *.lvl file. All you have to do is compress that, any custom graphics your level uses, and a text file with your level name, difficulty out of ten, and any important tidbits of information that you think would be handy to know (like a walkthrough for a puzzle level so I know what to do when making sure that the level can be finished) and submit it! Please keep each level in its own archive.

I'll be making a hub world where players can access any level in any order. The hub will be set up so similar-difficulty levels will be grouped together and levels with similar themes or gimmicks will be separated.

Just What is Super Mario Brothers X?

Super Mario Bros X is a freeware game engine by Redigit geared towards having the gameplay features and physics of Mario 3 and Super Mario World while adding a ton of cool features and not having to deal with the restrictions of the old (S)NES hardware. There's a lot it can do (and unfortunately some it can't, yet) but these videos do a much better job of showing it than I could explain:

Games are distributed as a world with levels package they can add to Super Mario Bros X and play from the main game. So far there's no way to make a self contained game so all players will need to download SMBX in order to even play the game. The game does come with a large set of graphics and sounds like the RPG Maker RTPs so everybody at least has a large number of platformer resources to work with (and it'll keep the download of the actual game itself small).

HELP!

The editor can be tricky to use so I made a SMBX Help thread on our forums! If you have any questions go there for some tips or helpful links.

Is there a way to put in hammer bros suit. Ect... All I see that you can put in blocks is fire flower, leaf, mushroom, and yoshi eggs.

I had an old version of the editor. Fixed now thanks.

EDIT: To kentona:

Well GRS is going to play test each level, ya know.

Captain Regal, it looks like you were using an older version of the editor. Make sure you download the latest beta.

Edit: Ah, he fixed it.

I like kentona's Desert Level, it's like a maze almost.

Max's Wild Ride is very fun although I ended up missing a lot of the stuff because I flew past it.

Meesa gonna play Kenton's desert level and Calunio and regal's things.

Thanks Solitayre. I think you edited that in. Or I was just not looking that closely the first time. (Slides were one of my favorite things about SMB3 and I was always disappointed they weren't longer. This arose out of that.)

Edit:

Re: Captain Regal's level: This is a really good level! Short and sweet and very well balanced difficulty. Way less ridiculously fuck you in the face overwhelming than a lot of the levels I've played so far. It felt more like Mario. This feels like the kind of thing that would belong early in World 5 of SMB3. Oh...you have a spiny who is freaking out about being on a cloud in the third area.

Re: Trapjumps: This is short but somewhat devious. WAY TOO EASY after getting the hammer bros suit. Make it a fire flower instead. Also it seems that having a tail would just make this level laughably easy but I'm not sure...remember people will be bringing in power ups from the getgo.

P.S. WHY IS EVERYONE USING THE SAME FUCKING MUSIC!!!??? SO SICK OF IT!! I listened to it like 5,000 times while trying to beat Karsuman's level. The last eight levels I played all used this stupid track.

Re: Kentonara Desert (or w/e): GREAT puzzle/maze level. I really really dug it. It reminded me of one of my favorite stages from World 2 of SMB3. I loved the multiple paths, and good use of the carrot as well as the stick. You have a few bugs though. There's a water tile error (a hole tile missing) when you activate the waterfall in the last area.
Yeah, I thought I fixed that missing tile. Oh well. GRS can fix it.

@WIP: GRS might not play every single possible route in a level. He just wants to make sure they're completable.

Also, has anyone made an auto-scrolling level yet? (Like SMB3 world...4 I think)

I am still planning my autoscroll level, Pretty sure I know how to make it work too.

Max, what music are you sick of? Which song, so the rest of us avoid it.

I am working on one now. (The physics are slightly buggy but not totally unworkable.)

It is too hard for me to continue testing it without a game pad so I will hold off on completing it until I have a controller and work on some easier levels instead.

I'm going to be doing at least one other scrolling level.

Forest Maze.

Hope people are using that for forest levels! :O
I did a quick test by having default move -2, but i couldn't find a way to prevent the player from outrunning it to the right - ie the camera was not fixed. You could run to the end of the level without having to for it to scroll to you

I think we uh...may be having a misunderstanding here.

Exactly what do you mean by a "scrolling" level?

I don't think you can lock them going forward faster than you expected. You can only lock them going backwards.

I've found the movement to be very solid, but I'm using a nice pace of -1, collision is usually more buggy at decimal speeds or higher speeds if it's not well done.

Uh guys I am pretty sure that if you build a level PAST the end of level point, and then cover it with the grey shit that defines the level edge, it will still be there. I used an "invisible" wall on the end of my stage because Boom-Boom would just run off the edge. Theorhetically this would work if you did the same to moving layers... Thus giving you a moving level you have to keep up with or die! Also, if you time it properly, the level would stop once it gets to a certain spot (IE a pipe on land).
Somewhat offtopic, but definitely worth it.

Submitted for your approval:

Please comment/critique so that I may improve upon it. It is a fortress level, complete with a makeshift "boss" of sorts, but I think it is relatively easy.
