Description

What is this?
This is a game making event where we partner up in order to create two games per partner!

TWO games?! Are you mad?!
I don't think so? Oh, wait, that was a rhetorical question, right?

Anyway, it's a pretty simple premise. You start a game and work on it for one week. At the end of that week all the games are pooled and then distributed semi-randomly to each other. Then everyone finishes the games they are given over the next week.

Basically, a big swaparoo~

Rules
  • Sign up below. Make sure that you're dedicated for the whole two weeks/both parts of the event.

  • Games must be new and made only for this event.

  • You may use any RM engine. Sorry, while it is a neat idea in theory to use any engine, most people who sign up might not have experience in those engines, limiting the ability to finish the games.

  • If you only have access to a particular RM engine, please note that in the comment section so that I know to account for that when distributing the first half of the games.

  • Also, make sure to include an RTP stand-alone version of the game (and include resources) when passing it over so that your partner is not looking for different files to make it work.

  • When it comes time to submit, for the first half of the game upload the WIP to the event locker (accessed by Submit in the top corner).

  • First halves of games must be in by the time shown under the Details section after you add your time offset in the settings of your account. The Date End reflects this and will be changed when the second halves are handed out.

  • The second halves will be submitable by game page ONLY. Make a game page for your game whenever you like, just remember to update the information when the second creator comes into play.

  • To keep time realistic, aim for each half to have a half-hour of play at the most. This will make an hour-long game, which is pretty decent for 2 weeks. You can go over this amount, but remember that the longer the game, the less chance there is to finish it.

  • In the spirit of the event, don't be a back-seat driver to the second creators. They can take the game where they like - that's half the fun of the event. In fact, let's just say that you keep your fingers out of the game pie after it gets handed over. Make it something of a surprise, eh?

Achievements?
As always, there's badges to consider~
Started in the Middle with You - 30MS - Received at the end of the event for those who started a game and had it completed.
Ended in the Middle with You - 30MS - Received at the end of the event for those who finished a game.
Meshing the Middle with You - 20MS - Given to the game that feels like a concerted effort to create a whole piece.
Mashed in the Middle with You - 20MS - Given to the game that is a mess of mashing together the elements.
Beyond the Middle, it's True - 50MS - Given to the overall best game of the lot, as judged by our panel of select cherry-pickers.

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I'm assuming there will be no communication between the two parties, and even if communication is allowed, there's really no time, and communicating too much kinda defeats the point. So there's really no good way to know in detail what's intentionally done a certain way in the first author's work, and what was just done to whatever degree they could and then they left the rest to you.

If you were cooperating more closely, you'd have no problems changing each-others' work. So I don't see any reason why you should try extra hard to avoid doing so in an event where it's impossible to avoid.
No communication between the two parties. Basically, take what you got and work with it to the end - this means try not to mess with the front half too much. Some of it will be unavoidable, especially if you find a bug or need to connect events to one another, but removing characters and messing with the pre-existing battles (bar bug-fixes) is no-go.

That said, you can make your own battles using the system that already exists or making your own. You can choose to change the tone and gameplay completely from the first half (turning a horror game into a dating one, for example) to the second. That's half the fun. Of course, you could also choose to expand apon the existing game, too, trying to build on what is already there - but if you do want to go zany and change that sidescrolling bullet-hell about saving your spouse into a top-down puzzle where you have to protect the evil lord, then do it~ As long as the first half is still there in all it's glory too.

Since we're not supposed to be a backseat driver to whoever gets the second half of our games, it's best not to be surprised no matter what direction the other person takes it.

Anyway, I have VX, VX Ace, and MV, and I'm going to start with either Ace or MV. Probably just flip a coin to decide.

What would be done in the event there's some games left over? Like, what if more people start MV games than there are people who have the engine?
Well, if 10 people did MV games, then I'd disperse those 10 games randomly among those who have access to MV (which would be at least 10 people, if not more, based on the fact that we'd have 10 MV starts.)

This is why I specified only RM engines - because most people have a couple of them (or can get their hands on them) and know how to use them. I mean, more than a few people here have listed at least 2 or more of the engines, so we're guaranteed to have more than two people who have the same engine (I have access to all of them, for example, so that's at least one person outside of the starter group who could use each engine).

So what exactly needs to be in the game made in the first half? Is there everything game-y, like characters and battles and maps (or whatever the core gameplay is)? Or could you just say, make a bunch of battles, or a cool mini-game and some maps, or something like that?

I'll probably do something in MV just so that I can help justify my purchase of it, but I gotta talk to Karsu to make sure he doesn't mind XD
I only have Rpg Maker Vx Ace, just to get that out there~
Seiromem
I would have more makerscore If I did things.

I have VXace and I'm sure bought 2k3 a little bit ago and activated it, but it doesn't seem to have activated...
I only have MV, though if needed I could use Ren'Py or something like that.

Make whatever as long as it's something that isn't complete - so the other person can finish it off. If that means making a cave with puzzles in it and leaving it to the other to figure out the story or battles, then that's fine.

If you start a story about a group of heroes travelling to a place and make half of that, then that's fine too. Or if you want to create a game where dig to the centre of the earth or a game about collecting cards or ... as long as it's only half-made, it's fine.

@aquaricorn: No-one will be using Ren'Py, seeing as it's an RM-only event.

I'd really like to join, but I see a bit of a potential problem: Since RPG Maker XP is the only RM engine I own (well, except for VX Ace Lite, but that doesn't count), my possibilities are somewhat limited. Now, I don't have any moral issues with making some poor other person work in that engine to finish my first-half-game. But I can easily imagine nobody else but me starting their original project in XP. So how would I be supposed to finished someone else's game if I participated in this contest?
Maybe I should just stay out of the event this time instead of making things more complicated for everyone...

LATE EDIT: Never mind all this any more. I now have 2k3, XP and VX Ace at my disposal. Problem solved.
That is a quandry.

:sigh:
Well, there's still a while - if someone intends to use XP let us know. If not... I'll make that sacrifice...

I don't mind digging up my copy of XP and making my game in that, if it'd help. I may even still have the installer somewhere to put on my current Lappy. ^_^

Thanks, you both, that's really nice of you. But please don't feel like you are obliged to go out of your way for my sake. And it's not my intention to torture you, Liberty. At least not more than necessary. ;)

I found the XP installer and it's now installed on my current machine and ready to go, if needed ^_^

I have it on good authority that one or two people who've signed up were going to make their projects in RMXP anyway, based on chatting with them. (It does still have the best mapping of any version of RPG Maker. It's more popular than you think.)

Awesome, thank you both a lot! I'll just give it a shot and see what happens, then.

That's true, and I personally really do like working in XP. But I also know many people dislike it, and a lot of the criticism it receives is justified. So I wasn't completely sure what to do. But everything's okay now.
I have a stupid newb question.

I'll assume I can use resources downloaded from the site. How does that work with crediting and such? Do I tell the person who is going to get my half what I used so they can then either make a credits scroll in game, or, add it to the game page or something?

Make a Read Me file and add credits there. You can add the credit roll after you've both compiled a list (after all, they might add some stuff too.)

Nothing reveals Humanity so well as the games it plays. A game of betrayal, where the most suspicious person is brutally murdered? How savage.

I'd say put all the necessary credits in a txt file and include it with the other files.
