powerful? no. ancient forum? yes. this site was created by a splinter-group from gamingw called #rm2k (irc channel), which included such characters as... .... well i guess from the active members of #rm2k, ankylo and i are the only ones left. trihan's still around a bit, i suppose. addit and pizza are also mildly related from the Olde Tymes of drama (technically others were active at gamingw, like Liberty and YellowMagic, but they weren't really part of the splinter drama)
anyway, WIP from #rm2k created RMN with rcholbert. #rm2k and #shmup (another gamingw splinter) moved here. shit happened and my close friend karsuman (#rm2k) became admin after the WIP/rcholbert years. karsu grew tired of the shit (this site used to be a wreck of aggression and negativity) and #shmup did a mass exodus. somewhere in that mess, kentona was dubbed the inheritor of RMN. we've had an era of peace for now.
i feel like this comes up in this thread like every 100 pages.
tl;dr: gamingw was a site that imploded due to in-jokery and rmn was birthed shortly before the disaster spiral

If your join date for RMN is before 2009-08 then you likely came from GW. Or other small associated sites.
I only heard of welp from GW and I was pretty sure it was used there as an in-joke about something despite the origins being older than the site. It's a great word, though. I use it a lot. XD
I joined up here because Cedarwoods and it's sequel had fallen down and GW was going a bit crazy. Someone (Dudesoft maybe? or Ocean? one of the CW peeps) PM'd me and told me to get my ass over here. I'd already joined up a few months before when it'd been mentioned on GW, just to check it out, but hadn't really bothered to do more than lurk a little.

Me too! Of course I didn't pop around until 2007, but still. I remember a time before Demon Legacy was released and XP was the big thing with all the little engine tags for each thread. Then there was that blob game where your character was three events stacked on top of each other, allowing you to create your own appearance with your own clothes.
I remember Lurking Under Life and how downright disturbing that game was despite having the most worn out plot/setting ever: you've inherited a haunted research facility in Antarctica from good ol' Uncle DeadNow who recently became deceased.
Of course, what I really yearn for is being able to go back into sites like Filefront and even forums like

she makes sounds and music with ableton and is talented too! likes the bass guitar.
but she's in a vacuum

she feels she lacks purpose, and just wants to meet some game makers.
and so she must be tricked into join our noble cause.
and be among real men

I tried so desperately to get myself banned/"deleted" after misunderstanding the rules of the forum (I bumped my own thread and Addit/S4D (at the time went by "esp" IIRC (which I don't)) laid down the law). I remember some people trying to talk some sense into me but I just wasn't having it. I also remember sending someone an angry PM (which they made public), and quoting some other guy and editing his post to make him sound like an idiot (stuff like "omg liek hurr durr me no liek j00!"). I think that was probably the first time on the net that someone told me "Seriously? Grow up." and it actually stung.
The reason why I joined RMN back in 2007 was because Craze sent me a PM about it on gamingw.

Going into my first adventure with Game-Story writing is pretty tough, but I'm learning a lot of things. Etymology ended up becoming a important thing to me now.

I get it whenever I look at my first forays into art in general. I even have a file that I used to store all this old shit, and whenever I look inside it, I pretty much go like "damn... I've come quite a long way."
