WHAT ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT RIGHT NOW?
Posts
Per a friend's recommendation, I was invited to an "invitation only" open house today concerning a 'job', but no one bothered to answer any of my questions. I swear if it's someone trying to get me to sell tahitian noni juice again, I'll be livid (and then I'll be gone).
thinking about offensive words. racial slurs, swear words, etc.
inherently, is any word bad? can a word like "faggot" ever be used to describe something negatively apart from its implied homophobic meaning? or can such a word truly be subject to context?
now contemplating linguistics and the meaning that words hold. can the meaning of a word change on an individual user basis?

I'm thinking that I made a huge mistake when I decided to make a worldmap as large and "to scale" as in Dragon Quest VIII.

i call my parents "nigger" as a term of endearment.
so yeah, i believe the meaning of words can change on a case-by-case basis.
furthermore, i don't really feel like words have meaning- they only have the meaning we assign to them, otherwise, they're arbitrary arrangements of sound waves.
if you called an alien with no knowledge of our species a faggot, they wouldn't be offended because they'd have no idea what you're saying. they wouldn't even know you were trying to 'say,' you'd just be making sound.
I think that words are very fluid, and care should be taken in their use. While words are just words, they also have the ability to be very powerful. Shit has risen and fallen on just words. For example, in tardis' example above, well, that's all fine and good (interesting, though!). However something like that wouldn't fly in say, a black college or something, and I assume (or from what I know of tardis, know that he realizes that enough to keep in mind that words carry extra weight depending on the listener.
Like, I have a sense of humor about it to the point where say, my (white) girlfriend can get away and laugh at calling me a 'jiggaboo' (I'm not even all black, though, so jokes on her) and I can call her a 'honky' right back (which, doesn't have nearly as much impact since according to her "who takes the word 'honky' seriously anymore? I WIN")
Like, I don't know. Words can either mean a little or a lot. An intelligent man knows the difference.

this isn't an argument for anything
My wife never had a super nintendo growing up - so I'm letting her play Chrono Trigger for the first time. It's pretty cute.
It's interesting watching someone else play the games I like, but it's hard to not be a backseat gamer.

I wish I had let my sister watch me play JRPGs so she would become a complete video game nerd like me, but uh I was like all "GET OUT IM HAVING SOME ALONE TIME WITH FF9" and stuff.
