Being shy makes me mean.

Being mean makes me shy.

The ultimate loop.
Most shy people I met weren't mean, probably the opposite. I mean it's not impossible to be mean and shy I guess, but I don't see how they relate to each other.

Well, you could feel embarrassed that you are so shy so you have more difficulty being assertive and will blurt out things in an abrupt and seemingly rude way. Then you feel bad for being abrupt and rude, and withdraw. You let things build up before you address them, so people keep doing things that irritate you because you haven't told them it irritates you. Or maybe you feel embarrassed or distrustful around someone, and so you act more aloof or annoyed to push them away. But they weren't really doing anything wrong, you just felt uncomfortable because of your own shyness, so then you feel guilty. The relationship is now awkward because of that, so you, again, withdraw.

Being shy is just an obstacle to overcome. Wouldn't really say it means being mean either. I was quiet in my younger years, but I was never mean to anyone. If anything being shy just meant people exploiting my kindness, and as such I have no mercy for people I don't trust anymore.

On another note, passed by some sort of liberty party planning truck on the way home. No idea what that place is...but it makes me wonder if liberty is stalking me. You aren't right? ....Right?

No worries I know you wouldn't do that.

SUCCESS!

Not a single kid came to my apartment to trick or treat! Now I have two bags of candy and no one to come and take them away from me!

I had to alter my plan, though: Instead of putting a bowl of apples outside my door, I put a bowl of broccoli. If any kid came to my doorway, I know I'll never ever see them again.

With the shy vs mean thing - I suppose from an outside perspective withdrawing from others could be seen as mean if someone is actively trying to connect and you pull away. It could be thought of as ignoring their overtures and thus be thought of as mean, when really, you're just too shy.

It's something to work on. Most shy people I've known have been more the quiet smile and withdraw types than the ignore completely ones, though.
Yeah there are different types. I don't know about most cases, but my younger years were a pain. I wasn't even that shy. I kept to myself most of the time because I wasn't really a conversation starter, but if someone tried to get close to me I would talk to them. Problem was I was into rpgs, while most other kids back then were into rap.

So here's my story from years ago. When I was around 12-13 some kids in the neighborhood did try to get close to me...problem was they were just using me to get access to my yard (we had paths into the woods, and a creek at the bottom of our hill, and my yard was the only way to get there. They didn't really care about me or what I wanted, and tried to get me intro trouble.

Later on when I was 15-16 one of the kids tried to get to me there. He enjoyed gaming as I did, and talked me into letting each other borrow games. We did that, except he gave me an empty case >.>.

Now I'm a bit older (27), and when I think to my childhood years I can only think about how screwed I got. I've always been a generally nice guy, and yet people back then only wanted to exploit me. Could say I learned the hard lesson of not to trust people early in life, despite the fact it's contradicts my nature.

This also ended up being way more than I intended to type, but yeah. That's my backstory.

I can only ever think of Kelsey Grammar singing that.

For me, it's Thurl Ravenscroft, better known as Tony the Tiger(the original singer of You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch).

Inktober 2016 is over. Whew. Didn't think I'd finish. All my crap is over on instagram @dudesoft
He's not completely wrong. It depends on the subject matter, though.
Well if the "non-academic" is a politician, then yeah sure, he's wrong.
Most politicians are so far removed from reality that it's fucking ridicilous. But if you take someone who worked as let's say a technician of some sort vs. someone who studied the profession for a comparable amount of years I'd trust the actual technician most of the time. There's probably a better example to make my point but I can't think of any right now, but surely you can see what I mean.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Politicians have whatever worldview their biggest financial donors tell them to have. On the flip side, though, academic experts use research to prove whatever worldview their biggest financial donors tell them to prove. You shouldn't take any of it seriously, it's all just a dance, a performance on stage being done for the sake of the handful of civilians who haven't realized that none of it is real.

Maybe that's too cynical? ...Nah.

@SnowOwl: Even without knowing the context of the tweet, I can almost guarantee that the situation he's talking about is not like that. It's probably something more like "There are experts saying that something very bad will happen if we don't enact new regulations, but those regulations would make things harder for big companies that work in this field and would cost them money." Which sounds like he's being paid off until you realize the researchers were also paid off by companies that work in competing technologies.
"Let me do my research in peace."
"Sure! What are the practical applications?"
"Well, I will see when I am finished."

Continues to research, write papers and discussing it with no real product coming out of it.
I know people like that and teachers at least give this knowledge to others.

It really depends. On one hand, you really should not say academics are removed from the reality but on the other hand, a lot of them like to play in their sandbox and that is about it.

However, saying those who perform out there know what is up is also... not so correct.
Good old theory vs. practice.
You can write something perfectly cool and have no knowledge how to proceed or manage people to do it.
You can be skilled but very inefficient and scratching yourself the other way around for no reason because you do not know the theory behind it.

Both should go hand in hand.

We can have our opinions but let's pretend we are actually sitting in those comfy parliament chairs. I know I would probably eff it up more than they...
