(sorry if the title was misleading guys :P)

Ladies how do you view the roles of females on TV and in games?
What is your perspective on how the women are being portrayed in the media, music, and news? As a female artist, designer, gamer, etc... how do you present yourself and make your mark to/on the world?
Have there been times when you were recognized more for your appearance rather than skills? How do you did with that?

I most commonly see women fall into the same old categories.
In America women on television, internet, and games are mostly dress to be provocative, kinky looking, or complete stereotypes like the girl next door or the everyday mom. I hardly see any shows where a woman is the main character but works with wits instead of looks. Im wondering if this is just an American thing or is common practice on tv internationally.

The gaming world it hardly differ, like Princess Peach in earlier Mario games. A blonde who always needed rescuing. Or Yuna from FFX, she had this subservient vibe about her which at first seemed natural because she growing into her role as a summoner in the game, but then FFX-2 comes and BOOM!!! Total fan service. Dress spheres and more skin to be seen. And dont get me started about DOA girls, I mean at first I really appreciated the game's battle system, the fighting styles, and the fuild flow of the control schemes, aside from the breast physics the game was great. Then, years later DOA Xtreme Beach Volley Ball. I was like are kidding me?

Some of the few female characters in a game I think that break that mold is Chell and GLaDos form Portal and Rin and Ayame from Tenchu Fatal Shadows.

I would like to see a good game with a normal or even comely female protagonist. I want to see what game designers can do with a female that is repellent in her looks rather than eye candy.
How does Chell break the mold? She's a typical silent protagonist.

Circumstance penalty for being the bard.

I spent years thinking I hated Yuna, but then I realized Yuna is awesome and I actually hate her voice actress. Yuna is actually a pretty proactive, clever, and heroic character and there are hints that she has a wilder/more adventurous side that resents authority, with her proper lady summoner act being the brave face she puts on for everyone else's benefit.

Not defending the pretty pretty princess dress-up aspect of the sequel, because it was ridiculous.
Ladies(and random men) how do you view the roles of females on TV and in games?
Getting better.

By attempting a balance of good and bad male and female characters with equal fan service for both genders.

Have there been times when you were recognized more for your appearance rather than skills?
This is going to happen if you're a minority. Fortunately, due to the increase of female gamers, many games will now have a focus on them, along with men - among other things.

On another note, If the gaming market was dominated by women, there would be just as much man service and unwillingness to delve into what makes an acceptable male character, other than OMG HAWTNESS.. It's all about a balance between the sexes, ya know? :)
Now, I've never played it myself(only seen vids), but I think Bayonetta sets a good example as to how to give females terrific leading roles. It's sort of like DMC(In a way), but with a woman as the main character.

FFX's Yuna, at least imo was a great character, and fulfilled her role pretty well.(Not in the sequel, though overall it wasn't a bad game, just wasn't really needed, like FFXIII-2, and the upcoming FFXIII-3: Lightning Returns.) The english voices though..some of them could've been better, lol..
All I can say on this topic is that more and more I hate 3rd Birthday with all my heart.

I was referring to the typical female character being very busty or being scantily clad, basically the eye candy mold.

Well I was only using Yuna to further illustrate the topic at hand which was what your perspective on how the women are being portrayed in the media, music, and news
was.
@sana

Ive seen Bayonetta too, I have much respect for its DMC like battle engine, but I've also seen her "climax" finisher moves. I kind of hate how the designers made her strip to finish off a boss. I think nudity is a wonderful or powerful thing at times, like in art but was it really necessary in the game? And when she uses her finishing move on the enemy Joy, its basically S&M. In my mind this just down played her character to nothing more but a sex symbol, that and the 6 inch gun heels.
Women are portrayed like that in real life, too. By themselves. Me & my fianceé were having a LOOOOOONG debate on the subject, yesterday. Look around. Look at all the duckface whores, everywhere. Look at all the hotlegged nekkid singers, everywhere! It isn't much different with men, either, it's just that men, are, erm... Men, and as men they take the active role, being less prone to this kind of exposition. But still... And those men are reflected in media as well.
It's depressing.
But it's society's fault. Art represents life. If women are whores in real life, so will their clothing be torn off in games untill we can see the lead character's whole ovarius in HD, Full Screen with the Scan Spell upgraded to rotation Lv.3.
They just don't do with men too because the majority of gamers are still male.
And even with those who aren't, women are already used to seeing women like this on videogames. Men are not, you'd lose a major part of audience by exposing your naked "sexual deviant" male lead to fly across the screen with only a baseball bat covering his nitty bits... Oh wait they already did this.

And so has the gaming industry has officially became a sub branch of the porn industry.

EDIT: Why you'd lose? Men are homophobes, women are not.
(obviously i'm generalizing ever since the first sentence.)

EDIT: I sounded kind of like a retarded preceptual guy but that's not what I meant. No, not all women nor all men are like this. But more and more are becoming so. It's a shame, because it degenerates the image of those who aren't.
Like black robbers, muslim terrorists, gay whore-queens-that-hit-on-every-moving-thing-and-annoy-people-that-are-quiet, etc.
It's not like every brazillian likes soccer, for starters, but we will all be represented as so in the media, because soccer-loving BRs call more attention that your average non-soccer loving brazillian.

Even if it's a one in a million case, if it gets enough attention, the whole million will be represented as so and it's gonna be one hard mess to clean up.

Cool, but what roles do you assign your male and female characters?
Is the male the typical gun/sword tanker in the game?
Do your females rely mostly on magic instead of use of weapons and skills?

I think I remember the game, The Witcher 2 having sex scenes, the cool thing about was it could be a girl/girl or man/man scene depending on your character. Now this is what I call equality in a video game. You can actually choose your bed mate and it is not restricted by heterosexuality.

There are few indie games I've seen girl/women have a more of a thoughtful role, like yume nikki, .flow, and the one I played from this site called Save your mother
How so, can you site any games?
I'm mostly looking at the women who are coming into the business and influencing it. There's quite a lot more girl gamers now than ever, IMO. This is going to continue, and therefore, less female fan service.

Because if there's a lot of women buying your game, you're not going to sell them tits. Not always.

My first project centered around two women. A tank and a healer. They're both lesbians.
Funny enough, my avatar is one of the characters.

My newest project is pretty much gender swapped.
The two notable females that join the party are a tank and a dps.
One of the female characters shows some cleavage... but let's not turn my project into a yaoi. =3

Gotta influence the game by playing it~
Maybe the rest of the world is plain different than what's happening in brazil in terms of male-female behaviour and representation, then... I hope. I really hope. T=

I saw the super bowl have time show with Beyonce, I loved the show it was wonderfully choreographed, but her outfit was so so.., well there was hardly any outfit. But this kind illustrates my point on how woman are sometimes just eye candy.

Think about it, let say you have a 10 year old girl who see's this show, now she's thinking well if I can look that pretty and dress like that and sing, I can be a popular and really liked. This subconsciousness wrapping young girls mind into thinking the only way to be successful is to look pretty and sing and dance. Why cant we give @ least 1/4 of that attention to female scientists or astrologist too?
Umm... This song comes to mind when I think about bad influences on young girls.

And sex is going to sell more than anything else. Natural human flaw... if it wasn't women - it would be men.
Has anyone watched any recent anime? So many nowadays focus solely on fan-service, and hardly offer up any plot. Rio: Rainbow Gate is an example of this..never seen it personally, just read up on it. Once in awhile some good animes pull away from being solely restrained to fan-service, but most just tend to offer nothing but..

(Also, Highschool of The Dead would be another example of fan-service. xD)
I find that Carrie from Homeland makes a good female protagonist. Of course, it doesn't hurt that she's played by Claire Danes.

When I saw the first Episode of HSD, I thought that this was going to be an awesome anime. Watching the guy have to kill his best friend to save the girl he had a crush on, but then then it just got ..uuggh its like they threw the plot out of the window, crapped on it, and then repackaged it for their fans So sad :(
