FINAL FANTASY 6 REMAKE!

Funny story: Did you know Square Enix's iPhone and Android version of Secret of Mana actually just uses the original graphics? I wonder if it sold badly and they blamed it on the graphics. (Instead of on the fact that it's an action RPG that's unplayable with touchscreen controls.)

No they don't. Many of the graphics in SoM iOS are the same as on SNES, but there are frequent and significant differences. Most of the tilesets are either outright new or feature 75% new tiles. The trees, the rocks, the walls--even the basic grass is new.

Actually, pictures speak better than words:

Wait, I just noticed that FF4: The After Years is getting a 3D remake as well.

Seriously what the heck. It's like they're taunting us by continuously porting FF4 games.

You're late on that XD It was already released!

SoM iOS mostly looks better. Don't let a poorly taken screenshot steer you otherwise. More time could've been spent on the sprites that were just straight upscaled, though. I think people too readily look at the absence of pixels and fault it, completely forgetting that pixel fetishism is a relatively new phenomenon, because these games don't look like that on the displays they were designed for. It stems from a large portion of gamers having only experienced many of these games via emulation on PCs.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Huh. I guess I had a mental block on how shitty the original graphics were. Saw the new ones and just kind of assumed the old ones looked the same way. Because I'll admit I think the new graphics actually look better. Well, except for the water.

It also helps that they didn't change the characters or enemies, they just sort of upscaled them to be a little blurry. Only the tilesets were redrawn. I feel like they could do the same thing for FF6... its character sprites had way more effort put into them than FF4 and FF5.

Some emulators nowadays do have filters to try and emulate the effects of the video signal being transmitted via composite cables and outputted onto a NTSC CRT TV. It also gives a more accurate representation of how the game was intended to look as artists back then planned for the lossy format of composite and color bleeding to improve the art of the game. This link has an example. I wish I could find a more in-depth site that discusses this, I think its neat how older consoles/games actually looked and how it was done using more technology than just drawing to the VRAM.

Now who actually uses said filters, well....
Just a heads up, a trailer is supposedly going to be sometime over the next twenty four hours, so we should really know how this remake is shaping up very soon.
Crap quality since it was recorded from a stream, but here it is. Figaro Castle, Narshe, Phantom Train, and the Opera House seem to be the focus of the trailer. No battle shots.

My thoughts? It looks okay enough. Visually it captures the look of the same game, but the personality and soul of Final Fantasy 6 don't quite seem to be there.
Eh... it looks just okay. The portraits are a hell of a lot better than FFV, though.

OH HELL NAW SQUARE ENIX

Oh wow, how did they let THAT slip into the trailer? Are they even play testing this game?
They probably did that on purpose. I really hate Square Enix. They are the worst gaming coming along side Crapcom. Just because FF6 isn't popular in Japan doesn't mean they should shit on it like they are. That's all they ever do to the game. This is messing with my favorite game of all time.

"The worst gaming"

Now, now, aren't we forgetting that both Square and Capcom made some of the most influential, ground-breaking games back in their day? Fighting games wouldn't be the way they are if not for Capcom's Street Fighter, for instance.
Their business model has changed for the worst, no denying that. But they did their part back in the day. Capcom too.
Eh, whatever. I'll just stick to the GBA version, arguably the definitive version anyways.

I just find FFVI to be overrated as a whole.

It's not as grind heavy as FFII and FFVII was, but it's nearly there. There's no balance at all IMO, once you've had one character master everything, the game is pretty much beat like in the said games. However you're not required to master every Esper as you don't have to master every Materia in FFVII, but just the fact that you still can is a downside to me IMO.

I'm probably going to just get it to see how it stacks up with the other iOS games and it's original, but I probably won't pick it up again given that FFVI is #7 on my favorite of the first 9 classic FF games.

Square did, not Square Enix. Square Enix just doesn't know what they are doing. Ever since 12 (which was okay, not great or fantastic), the games started going down hill. There has been like a few games since the merger and that's KH2 and TWEWY.

.... Might that be a contradiction? Which by the way, I don't feel Final Fantasy 6 to be that grind heavy at all. Sure it can be if you want to go all out and get everything, but it's far from required.
If anyone ever has to grind in FF6, then they need to stop running from random battles.

I can agree with this but, being someone who never played a Kingdom Hearts game or any DS/3DS RPGs, I can safely say that there hasn't been a single Square-Enix game that I've enjoyed tremendously. I simply buy their games out of blind faith, hoping that I'll catch a glimmer of what Squaresoft so great back in the 1990s. I'm yet to see that spark. Square-Enix's games wouldn't be so bad if they didn't make ten bad decisions for every one good decision.

I'll stop running from random battles as soon as they stop occurring every two steps and taking forever with FF6's sluggish battle system.
Well, the day's arrived. It's out on Android devices. I'd check it out, but I don't want to use up my data to download it. I'll likely grab it when I'm home so that I can use wifi to nab it.

The PC sprites are really disappointing looking. In the battle pic with the behemoth... is that Gau on the end, or? Every sprite in that picture has zero pesonality.
