WHAT ASPECTS OF THE SITE DO YOU USE MOST? LEAST?
Posts
This is just a quick "poll" I am running looking into feedback to some of the systems available on RMN. What ones do you like? What ones do you use most? Which ones do you use rarely or not at all? Which ones did you not know about, or only recently discovered? (Are there any related features you'd want added/enhanced? Any new features/systems?)
Some of the site's features:
-The frontpage big cycle banner
-Development spotlights + history
-Featured game spotlights + history
-The gamespots on the frontpage
-The buzzing newsfeed + history
-RMN TV
-Buzzing games system and the way buzzscore is calculated
-Latest screenshots
-Random screenshots
-The Games portal
-The development portal
-The event portal
-The Community portal
-The RMN Store
-Gameprofiles and game management
-Review submissions + history
-Media submissions + history
-Blogs + history (including Buzzing Blogs)
-Game Images + history + image feedback system
-All Game Updates feed
-Dropbox integration
-The notification system
-The ability to comment on nearly everything
-The event system
-The various game development submissions like Articles, Tutorials, Scripts, Utilities/Plugins and Resources.
-Engines and Engine Bulletins
-Makerscore
-Achievements
-Misaos (annual awards)
-The forums
-User profiles (with the showase games, submission and post histories, and user statuses)
-The Locker
-The new Playlists system?
-The other "Web 2.0" RMN sites like Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Steam, Youtube, and IRC
-the AddThis widget for sharing content on Facebook or whatever
-Donation perks
-...the footer?
-something else?
Also, I want some feedback on the ways you find out about things on the site. How do you follow or find new things?
-Latest posts?
-The minibar section on most pages (except the frontpage and gameprofiles) (right now showing All Hallows Event, Marios Mansion 3, SRW and RMN music pack)?
-The Important header?
-The Event portal?
-IRC?
-The frontpage? (news feed, buzzing games, the latest...)
-One of the other portals?
Let me know what you find good, bad, useful or otherwise. I am looking to highlight things people use more often, showcase things that more people should use, and perhaps reduce emphasis on little used things.

(double posting is an administrator's prerogative)
Personally, I think that the Notification system is RMN's greatest feature. Being able to follow games and events (and to a lesser degree topics, articles and such) is a great boon for keeping tabs on the activity of the site. In fact, I would like to see this system expanded into more areas, like being able to subscribe to an engine or a developer.
Gameprofiles are also very integral to RMN's identity. I love the flexibility they have and customization options offered. I would like to add some more flexibility in the management of gameprofiles, though.
Our Event system is really something these days! (thanks Ankylo! he did most of the coding for that). Being able to host events, with signups, submissions, achievements, judges, and notifications and everything else is a great feature.
I know that Makerscore has been a big motivator for me to make games. I know it is a largely meaningless number, but hey.
The Community portal is probably my most visited part of the site. Seeing all the forums, plus latest topics, latest posts AND statuses is a good way to track minute-to-minute site activity.
The Images Feedback system has been largely a bust - and that disappoints me. I think it is better than the screenshots thread because things are organized, visible, and you get notices when you get feedback.
Scripts, Utilities, Plugins and Resources haven't been as prominent and successful as I'd hoped. I think they are important, though, and am looking for ways to make those features more useful to users.
I am surprised and pleased that Media really took off. Just seeing all the LPs and LTs and music and promo vids and art coming is is great!
The RMN Store is about to get a big overhaul in the coming months.
EDIT:
Oh yeah, I am also a great consumer of The Locker. I know that there are tons of other free filehosting sites these days (finally!) but it is damn convenient just to have one integrated into the site here.

Lock and archive the current screenshot thread. Pin a new, locked screenshot thread that just includes a hyperlink to the images needing feedback section. Wait a month and delete that thread and hope people get the idea and migrate.
My first stop is always the Community portal for the same reason as kenton's.
I also think that Gameprofiles/pages along with subscriptions/notices are strong points of the site as well.
I use the Dropbox integration (the send to Dropbox feature at least) to send games to Dropbox when I'm browsing RMN at work. I added that more as a feature for myself than anything else, heh. I really need to work on the integration of sending your game downloads right from Dropbox to RMN, to help those people who have trouble uploading their games to RMN. Maybe some way to keep the download automatically updated with the latest version from Dropbox...

Notices are great. Makerscore is fun.
I enjoy reading and writing so Articles/reviews are fun for me.
If we're talking about parts of the site that need work, the development portal comes to mind. I've mentioned before that I think instead of cluttering up the main page with literally everything that ever gets added to the site, I would keep the main page just for showcasing games + video/article/picture of the week or whatever. I would move latest blogs and such to the Development portal.
That's just my take.

Handy dandy lists!

After thinking about it, I wonder if there might be a better way to have discussions with the developers of a game? Is this mainly how people use the main forum in their game profile? I always feel bad cluttering their game page with my blathering...
EDIT: Regarding the screenshot thread, part of the reason it's so attractive to me is just the ability to show off a little. Sometimes I haven't set up all the fancy game profile stuff just yet - because I haven't come up with a title, or because I'm just working on a side-project - and being able to post miscellaneous screen shots and videos outside of the gamepage system is nice.

- Community Portal: I use this constantly, especially latest posts.
- Notifications: Definitely good for stuff I'm really interested in, or stuff of mine people are talking about.
- Makerscore: It's sorta greed-inspired gamification but it's fun :P I like points. It does give me a little more inspiration to write articles and reviews.
- Events: Super cool. The system is pretty simple and easy to use. I haven't done many events but I would like to, and it does make things easier.
- Front Page: I really appreciate the mix here, it's obvious that RMN is trying to support both the popular titles people often come here for, and the smaller/novice ones that might be passed over. I like the latest reviews/articles/etc. sections, I check those every so often to scan for interesting stuff.
- Game Profiles: I love talking to people about their games (and my games) and this is a good place to do it, to get excited about a game, ask questions.
I find new things from:
- the LATEST sections on the front page, buzzing games
- Latest Posts
- Any of the numerous banners floating around that catch my eye
- People talking about their/other games on the forum or statuses,
- Stalking someone's games through their user profile (via the forum)
There's not much I actively dislike! So here's a list of things I don't really use:
Things I don't really use
- The Store: Seems cool, I don't use RM so I don't know much about this, but music/art packs are a neat idea, anyway.
- The other portals: Honestly, I don't use the Games/Development/Events portals much. The Development portal can be cool - I like helping people with their screenshots - but I don't really use it for much else.
- IRC: I'm actually on IRC here and there, but the channel is silent a lot, so sometimes there's no one to talk (or rant) to :P Not really a problem with the channel itself, though.

Not sure if this counts, but I used to enjoy the search feature we had quite a bit, and now I find it cumbersome. I like it less that I did before.
The whole game subscriptions/notices/gamepage system is great, and comprises most of my activity on the development side of the site. Other than that I'm just on the forums, the community portal being most of the reason I even come to RMN in the first place, since I don't actually play a lot of RM games. The game portal is cool, and really useful for finding things to review or to look for unpopular/weird games that haven't been given attention.
The front page is great, but Solitayre's suggestion would improve it a lot. I don't use the Development or Store portals at all, so I can't really comment on them. I think that maybe more Pictures of the Moment would be cool? I used to go to the screenshot topic to find cool looking games, but it doesn't get used for that so much anymore, so I find it harder to find out about cool games. I mean, there are a lot of tools for game promotion in place already, but I'm a visual guy so I guess it would appeal to my type a little more. (I know that there's already a random screenshot and new screenshot section, but more of the so called "cream of the crop" would be cool. The random section could probably be dropped, since it's easier to find out about old/unpopular games by using the game portal.)
Jude has a point about closing down the Screenshot Topic in order to make the development portal more active. It makes no sense to have it there if all it's doing is diverting attention away from something that you feel needs it.

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Top used features:
- Forums (game dev, GD&T, help requests)
- Articles (really just GD&T articles)
- Locker (though I pay for personal webspace so I only use this because it's faster)
- Images looking for feedback (I like helping people, and I post my own images here too sometimes)
- Notices (I subscribe to some games and enjoy seeing their updates) (I kinda wish I could unsubscribe from non-moderator comments on an event I'm registered for though, without unsubscribing from its announcements or unsubscribing from all events)
- Events (I rarely enter events but I pay attention to their existance and to the winners)
Features I don't personally use at all, but seem maybe useful to other people:
- Scripts (I go to other sites for scripts because RMN didn't start accepting scripts until Ace was out, so we have almost no RMXP scripts)
- Resources (Do we even HAVE any resources in the resources section?)
Utterly unused features that could be deleted to simplify the site and I don't think it would matter at all:
- Social media links (Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Steam Group)
- Engine Bulletins (I'm not even 100% sure what this is)
- Review Feed (I think reviews should exist, but I'm not sure why anyone needs to know about a review for a game unless they're looking at that game - having a feed for reviews is pretty pointless, and putting it on the front page is extremely silly)
- Blog Feed (mostly the big list of blog posts and the front page feed, but even the blog feed built into the forums is pretty pointless - people should just use the forums if they want people other than their followers to see the post)
- Links (I just now clicked on the Links button under development for the first time in my life, and I'm confused. I was expected a list of sister websites. But instead it just seems to be a repository for random crap someone thought was useful?)
- The Latest (...is this different from the front page somehow?)
- RMN TV (Like the review feed, this is just media for specific games. It should be on those games' pages, not in a feed. I doubt anyone wants a list of every promotion for every game that happens to be in .avi format.)
- Picture History (Picture of the Moment doesn't need a history page)
I wonder how many hits each of those pages gets per month.
I support simplifying the website. It has too much shit. Like, that discussion topics section of the development portal? Who the fuck needs that? I am the one who picks topics to put in it, and even I think it's pointless. Just click on Forums. We don't get more than two or three topics a week about game design, and no one cares about the blogs of games they aren't following.

-The new Playlists system?
I did not even know this was added until just now! Gonna try this out.
I do like having one place that has all the latest reviews/articles/blogs, once in the morning I like to give it a scan and see what's new and interesting.
Is there a way to put up stuff without it automatically being showcased on the main site? When I was taking down & putting up my edited art again I realized everything was popping up in the images section. Color me embarrassed!
Granted, I realize this generates interest for certain creators. I just wish I had more personal control over it I guess.
From now on, I'll simply upload less content per day. In other words, limit myself to only 3 uploaded pictures per visit.
Luckily, everything I need up is up so there is no need for me to be a posting-nut right now.

The Screenshot Thread is also for those who don't have enough to make a game page. With no game page there is no feedback section, so it's a viable thread to have around. That said, we will be needing a new one soon - the current one is getting a bit big.
As to the questions posted - I use quite a bit of the stuff on the site.
Notices, front page, black bar (oh god, do I love me that black bar. I wish every site had one. It's the most under-appreciated piece on the site but also, I bet, the most used. Black bar~<3 ), Site search (now that it works for me), game pages, Community portal, the other portals (not as much as CP but a hella lot more than I thought I would), MAKER SCORE (<3), preview button (thank you thank you thank you), post-edit options (;^; thank you ankyyyyy~<3 ), forums, locker (I use this all the time)
The only thing I don't really use is the list sections - latest posts, history, etc. I do use the game search a lot, though, and the name drop-down for messaging, too.
A lot of the features on the site just work together really well. ^.^

Notices, and game profiles are the two best things RMN has going for it. After that the community portal, statuses, the locker, and reviews for sure. I also look at the review feed pretty frequently and if I feel bad at the lack of reviews coming in I search in the games portal for an obscure unrated game.
The dropdown menus for the black bar are really kind of clunky right now, I could see me using them frequently if they're better. Like, giving a glimpse into the mailbox messages is really unnecessary. If it listed just the mail that I received without the extra summary of what's within it'd be better. The notices dropdown is way too long. I'd probably limit it to latest 5 notices. Mark all as read is really useless as it has the same affect as pressing the notices button itself - this has been said already though just I'm just mentioning it~<3 Also if the notice previews would leave after being checked that'd help (also already said). And as a little bonus I'd put the link to the subscriptions list next to Mark all as read button, though that's not too important and I'm sure not everyone would want it there.

I'd also recommend that if there's a listing limit for the Notices drop down (say 5 or so) you could have a dismiss button next to each so you can dismiss one and have another unread/checked take its place. Also, the links open a new tab? That way you can easily go through them without having to go to the Notices area if you want to check just one or two and ignore the others?
Also, another reminder/recommendation for the quick links drop-list for under the RMN insignia that I mentioned a while ago - where you can choose to create up to five quick links that can be edited in settings. Say, the initial five be to the portals, but allow people to change them to other links - say, a game page they're working on (instead of having to keep searching for it over and over again), a thread in the forums, a script they put up (to check for questions), etc...
I think it'd be a really neat feature.

I'm willing to bet that the "Mark all as read" under Notices is supposed to be essentially the same as "Reset Notices count". So, if your Notices are still blinking after you check them, you press that, and you should be good!
Anyway, more on topic, my most used feature is Notices, hands down. It's the first thing I check when I log in. I've supported the image feedback section, using the screenshot thread maybe once since it's been implemented. Not that I used the screenshot thread much before it was implemented, but that seems beside the point. I do like me some markerscore, but the thing that seems to push me to get things done are events. Particularly the Release Something events. Getting bonus markerscore through achievements is always tasty!

When I first login to RMN, I usually tend to check out the Post History first before checking my Notices before eventually wrapping up my day by checking out people’s Statuses and The Forums. I do sometimes read a few Blogs and among other things on the front page, but that’s usually about it; it just depends.
And I agree with Jude about shutting down The Screenshot Topic if we already have a Images Feedback thingy already on the site. Since you guys worked so hard on getting that thing up and showcasing it – why not showcase it? Although Liberty has a point about the original screenshot topic being useful for people who don’t quite have enough content to make a game page but still want their screenshots to be commented on – why not have an option to submit screenshots to it even if you don’t have a game page yet?
Other than that, everything is just peachy for me. I would think of something else to comment on, but I'm toodrunk tired right now.

If you can submit screenshots for feedback without a game page, then... it's just the same thing the screenshot topic, except 100x more work for kentona and ankylo.
If I were gonna get rid of one of the two, it wouldn't be the forum topic.

I think Notices and Game Updates should be changed to only show new blog posts, downloads, images, and reviews. If someone posts a comment on the game page, how is that an update by any means?
edit: Another thing that may be of use is being notified if a new thread pops up in the forums. I think that would be handy if the thread pertains to me or is about something I'm having trouble with, so I don't have to browse through the 100+ forum threads to find what I'm looking for. Also, maybe even a way to search for topics or games with key words? The Google Custom search is useless to me because if I wanted to use Google to search for something on RMN, I would type something like "RMN Hero's Realm on the Google Search Screen.

The Google Custom search is useless to me because if I wanted to use Google to search for something on RMN, I would type something like "RMN Hero's Realm on the Google Search Screen.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I think Notices and Game Updates should be changed to only show new blog posts, downloads, images, and reviews. If someone posts a comment on the game page, how is that an update by any means?
This would be sensible as an option, at least. What I do still want to see notices for:
- A comment on a game page by the creator of that game
- A comment on my own game's page
What I don't want to see, and should probably not be shown by default, but might make sense to let people enable in their account settings:
- A comment on someone else's game page by a random person

The google custom search is pretty good and I don't think it works the way you think it works. I think it works exactly the way you want it to work. And you're just bitter because you don't like the google brand name for whatever reason.
Example forum search for topics about bosses
There is totally already a page that shows when a new thread pops up in the forums, by the way. It's on the right side of the Community page. Shows the latest five topics, which is usually at least 24 hours worth.
