SQUARE-ENIX DECIDES TO GIVE ALL OF ITS FANS THE MIDDLE FINGER BY RE-RELEASING THE PC PORT OF FF7 FOR THE PS4

I'm still waiting for my FF5 and FF6 3DS remakes
If I had a 3DS, I might be interested in this. The FFV and FFVI GBA remakes were pretty good, the DS FFIII remake was alright and the DS FFIV remake was pretty great. Though I found the new mini-games annoying, they were optional. Only being able to new game+ twice before you had to start an entirely new file was stupid, though.
Their remakes are actually handled competently, for the most part. It's just that their new material falls flat. FFIX was the high point, in my opinion. FFX was decent, but hampered by the voice acting and their obsession with matching the mouth flaps perfectly, rather than sounding like human beings. Which is probably why Auron sounds the best, since you rarely see his mouth. XII was okay-ish, but suffered heavily from no one having any idea who the lead should be. XIII cared too much about looking good. The environments looked nice, sure, but looks were all they had. The voice acting was certainly improved, but the writing dropped a couple pegs. The player had little input in battles beyond assigning classes and battles could take ages because staggering took ages, and was the only way to defeat some enemies.
This turned into a ramble. Sorry.
author=CrazeFeldschlacht IVthe worst crafting system in any game ever and a needlessly complex skill system with a horrible menu?
I think there is a legitimate argument to remake games, however. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together for the PSP was a pretty slick remake.
nothnx
You sure man? I mean yes, the crafting design was awful and I'm not a fan of all of the gameplay design decisions, but the game as a whole was fun to play, the artwork was an improvement, the music remaster was stellar, and the writing was on point. There are legit reasons to prefer the original, but on its merits as a remake it was done well.

Libby's right! Rerelease Suikoden II. I don't have it and I'm not about to pay 200 to 400 dollars for a copy.
They have! It's on PSN as of yesterday, for $10~ AND a release of it and 1 are coming to Europe PSN in January. A lot of prayers have been answered. ^.^
This means you can get it on PS4/3 and Vita/PSP! Go forth and enjoy! ~<3
My bro lost his shit when word came out of Suikoden 2 on the PSN, which in turn made me heard about it and made me lose MY shit XD He has a hard copy of it still (Well, he has all of them from Suikoden 1-V and Tactics), which he graciously has let me borrow, but now I must return it them him so he can stash it away for safe keeping now that it's no longer needed to enjoy the glory of Suikoden 1 and 2 (I'm playing through V right now XD)
But YEA. He also showed me the FF7 announcement and me made me LMFAO. At first I was like "Wut, you redoing the graphics and making it pretty or sumthin? Nah? Rly? LMFAO SQUARE, WAT U DO."

I really started to dislike SE when the FFX HD pack was released... why did they mangle the soundtrack like that? The music was one of the most likeable aspects of that game and they just butchered it. (I know that's stupid, I can always just get another copy of the original - but it's the fact that they thought it was necessary to change the soundtrack that I find so annoying.)
As one of the few fans (from what I've gathered) of 13-2, I was bitterly disappointed with Lightning Returns. I don't understand what their intention with LR was. Honestly. That game was like a "fuck you! this is what you get for investing time and interest in 13-2!", it was just awful story and game progression wise. Combat was fun, though.
I like 7 as it is. I don't really understand the concept of remakes anyway (with some exclusions, I suppose), so I'd rather that Square Enix, and anybody, spent their energy on original games.

A full-on remake is not needed, I agree, but a simple port really doesn't do the game justice on a next gen console like the PS4. I still pop in a lot of the old classics from time to time, and I like them the way they are, but when it comes to porting those same games, I expect some level of re-imagining to be done.
I mean, I love Final Fantasy Origins on PS1 as much as I love the original NES games, and I think they did a decent job of porting that game over with updated visuals and translations, and other fixes, so the same should be done for any FFVII port.
Personally, with all the mods going on in the PC for FFVII, a perfect remaster for me would be to update the game to HD standards with modified sprites and battlers, maybe update some of the background details, update some of the cut scenes but don't change how the cut scenes play out, and update/fix the translation mistakes.
Don't mess with the core of the game, leave the mechanics and quests alone as they are, don't need to add AC-like scenes, don't need a Devil May Cry game play, don't need voice acting, or any of that.
That way veterans won't be able to complain (too much) about the changes and may actually appreciate the game even more, knowing that SE went out of their way to keep the feel of the original game while giving it a fresh coat of paint. And new gamers (those who appreciate turn-based rpg's anyways) might even appreciate the game as well.
This port is gonna cost $16 on PS4.
I think I'll stick to my PS1-version if I ever feel like replaying the game.

author=kentonaauthor=SaileriusBecause getting the greatest game ever made (Chrono Trigger) on the SNES would set me back $450, but luckily I have a port on the DS I can play anywhere!
Why does everyone keep demanding that old games get remade? You've already played them. You can already play them again. I would rather see the effort go to something new.
I don't mind the "wasted" effort of remakes - it's not like the game companies that do remakes don't have a lot of spare "efforts" to put towards the task. New graphics, new polish, updated conveniences (like being able to Save in SMB Allstars!), (usually) new content - it can be a boon. Especially if you missed the game the first time around.
That's not a remake; that's a port! And I can get behind that, because it's wonderful when older games are made available on newer platforms so a wider audience can enjoy them.

I know that it was obtuse, but I kind of liked that about it. I mean, the game wasn't balanced around it, so it was a completely optional way to boost your stats, and the potential payoff is crazy. If the steps were laid out for you, then the game would have to find another method of balancing it (like making the mats even harder to get). So, on my first play through, I probably just did the easy, base-level upgrading and got by fine. But then toying with that system until you found a way to break the system felt a bit like it must feel to discover a scientific theory. I think it's cool that a game made me feel that.
My only complaint with Legend of Mana is that there's not enough danger in the battles. I love the battle system itself, but, yeah, you can just uppercut indefinitely. Easy difficulty aside, though, it's one of my favorite games. Interesting storytelling, memorable characters, cool systems (I thought so at least), great music and art, and a fun battle system that unfortunately didn't get tuned highly enough.
Ahh, I can see that. Personally I like the process of looking at all your lego blocks, knowing what they do, and trying to determine to to best pick the right pieces and put them together, but not the process of trying to determine what the individual pieces do. So something more like Golem AI making than the crafting system in LoM (if AI parters were ever useful). Still, I appreciate your insight :)

That’s still way too much. :P
And yeah, maybe you guys are right; maybe doing a remake may not be the best idea and be more fundamentally (well, with Square-Enix’s track record lately) worse and not as well-received as the original - but at least I want them to try and show that they actually give a damn. Who knows? Maybe they’ll do a good job in the end and do the name of FF7 some justice. Either way, it wouldn’t hurt to at least try. You owe us that much, you greedy b*stards.

"lolololololololololololololololololol" ~ Square-Enix <3
Hey, I give this guy credit; he had some serious balls of steel to come up on stage and be the one to tell everybody all that "great news".
I’m actually surprised that he didn’t get lynched.

I'm still waiting for my FF5 and FF6 3DS remakes, so FF7 has to wait it's turn!
ff5 on 3ds please. bravely default is good but not enough
except idk i'd rather something new but just a lot like ff5
like bravely default.
i don't know what i want
edit: i want english ff type-0
I was rather exited about the Phantasy Star remakes, but they turned out to be crap. If an FF VII remake is ever made and it changes the game in a significant way, it will most likely also be crap, different company notwithstanding. They can always add an optional dungeon/boss or two with no problem, but if they rewrite dialogs or makes changes to combat, equipment and materia, I would not have fate in SE knowing what they are doing.
author=CrazeI've seen a fan patched version. You aren't missing much, from what I've seen. Apparently the game controls are terrible (the camera controls at least, which is practically a sin for an action game) and the characters aren't endearing or interesting.
edit: i want english ff type-0
Just watching the first hour or so of the game had me wondering "Who are these people and why should I care that they're dying?" You don't meet a single character in the first twenty minutes or so that actually lives past the intro.
Mind you, the patch is supposed to be really impressive, especially since the game is pretty huge. Few spelling errors, supposedly a very faithful translation, but the game itself is disappointing.
Edit: Let me summary. I've heard the game described as FF VIII and FF XIII having a love child. Seems accurate to me. Note that I don't hate VIII, but I wouldn't call it good, and I do hate XIII.

I don't think FFVII's current dialogue (dat translation) or combat would really hold up compared to modern games, though. If they remade it, they would have to update the gameplay. Otherwise, why bother?

What about the gameplay?
Only fools will celebrate the day Square announces an FF7 remake.
That's the day you know they're well and truly out of ideas and on the verge of going under. An FF7 remake is their last ditch desperation move.

With every passing year there are games that are released with massive worlds and content. The whole 'it would take 100 years to remake the amount of content in FFVII!!!' held true in 2004, but not 2014. Content wise even adjusted, FFVII isn't very massive anymore. It wouldn't be THAT big of an undertaking. Not to say that SE has any sort of obligation to do so, they don't, but you know, people dream.
Either way, this sort of announcement is pretty tacky. PR and marketing mean a lot, and SE just shit themselves on this one.
I've been there in programming. I get done with the game, then later someone suggests improvements. Not a glitch mind you, I'd usually try to do those right away. Like "you should totally do X." I kinda like the idea, but then at some point I'm like "what a pain." That said, at some point, if they had normal reputation, they should say "sorry, this project is canceled."

What about the gameplay?
As I mentioned: The camera controls are bad. Very slow panning in an action game, so enemies are out of sight. Everything else I saw suggests that the gameplay is a poorer implementation of standard third person action RPGs.
The PSP Phantasy Star games are probably better. Phantasy Star Portable 2 is pretty great in terms of gameplay (not so much on the story side, I'll admit). Going by how PS Portal 2 plays, compared to the videos of Type-0's gameplay, it's equal at best, probably a downgrade.

If this is true....WHY?
