Whatever arguments that could be made about the Genesis era Sonics, I find them beautiful, well crafted games that I still play to this day. The art and visual design choices for Sonic 3 & Knuckles in particular still blow me away, and that music god damn.
I enjoy the NES/SNES Mario just as equally (and the Mario games have more depth and are more technically superior), but places like Casino Night Zone, Ice Cap Zone, Sky Chase Zone, Sky Sanctuary Zone, and other areas are just candy to my senses. The old school Sonic games have this style, a je ne sais quoi that Mario has never been able to match in terms of aesthetic.

did somebody say
ice cap zone
(Sonic's music is way better than same-gen Mario, also Robotnik is way more boss than fucking Bowser)

For me it was always Hydrocity Act 2 from Sonic 3 as my fav Sonic Genesis song.
I'd have to agree with the rest of it. Sonic's been doing pretty poorly the past few years, but musics usually been pretty strong.
Special shout-out goes to Sonic 3D Blast's volcano valley stage music. Also Act 2.

Sure, I like that stuff too, but I can't help but feel Sonic games are never about the sum of its parts but more or less relying on cutting edge tech demo features or having Michael Jackson tier soundtracks that made the Genesis chip sound amazing. It's something that I only learned recently when I decided to revisit the games. But idk, the outside contradicts the inside is all I'm saying.
I've only emulated the 2D sonic games because i didn't grow up on Nintendo, and from just about every source I've heard this was a genuinely good choice.
Know what I think was better though.
Jazz Jackrabbit, god, so fast, so furious rabbit massacre action, so great!
Rocket Knight was also hype, these two games easily trump Xargon, that wasn't as good as i remembered. I guess I was a lot easier to impress at 8.
What I do like about Xargon is it's storytelling and environments, sadly the gameplay didn't live up to what I expected and ultimately i decided to let my nostalgia for the game die.
Got a big pack of old shit I might have played in the day that wasn't DooM / Heretic, christ did I find some gems.
So i guess I dislike Xargon for gameplay reasons, if you don't know what I'm on about, think Jill of the Jungle, but way slower, and much prettier.

Sega, silly me.
Undertale is a game about cheering on psychopathic racism and plagiarism of Earthbound and Touhou. Of course, none of its mentally-impaired fanboys realize how hypocritical its "message" is or that their claims of how unique it is only demonstrate the brainless tools haven't played a game made in the last three decades.

Oh my god.
The game is about how you're supposed to find insane monsters that try to kill you just because you're a human sympathetic and likable and have no problem with them trying to murder you, but to defend yourself against such people is unforgivable.
It also blatantly rips off Earthbound's visual style and steals its "bullet hell" patterns from Touhou games.

(We decide to ignore the WinglessOne...
Even though every human has no wings.
It fills you with determination.)

It's the kind of game where it's fans are considered 'rabid' simply because they like the thing.
@WinglessOne: Feel free to kill them all if you prefer doing that - just stick around in the area to make sure they're all dead.
@Other users: Click on their name and select "Add to ignore list".

Don't bother, he's already gone.
Also, no, some of the fans are pretty rabid and demand LPers play a specific way, spoiling it. They're assholes. Granted, there's a lot of great fans too, but there are fuckwits out there in every fandom. (It probably doesn't help that there's an overlap with the homestuck fandom since the guy who wrote that helped undertale's creator to make the game).

I've been umming and erring at Undertale for a while now, and even after reading this page alone I still can't make my mind up XD.
One game I detest, but I'm determined to play through to the end so that I can leave a negative review on steam, is Singularity. I dislike that game because it started off so strongly. The game went down hill when I had to go into a corner to pick up a shotgun, I heard a monster roar, and before I could turn around to get sufficiently scared, a tutorial popped up, totally killing the immersion.
Then the game officialy went to my shitlist when a certain character dies.
And it's gone downhill from there.

My final two cents on Undertale is that it's not doing something original if you're nice to everyone.
...I don't have any other games I haven't already covered yet.

Honestly, Undertale takes a little getting into. The first hour is pretty bleh, mainly because it's all tutorials and easing you in. The rest of it is great characters and frustrating boss battles (and, if you don't like bullet hells, you're gonna not like the battles that much). That aside, it does bring a lot of interesting stuff to the table, especially on replays, where things change based on what you did in the last playthrough.
It's interesting enough in its own way, and the charming characters are what really make the game worth playing, if you're not into bullet hell. Also, you don't have to be nice to everyone - you can kill at will if you so desire, and that, too, will effect the next time you play. Or you can do balanced and just kill the annoying stuff or play it as a normal RPG and run/fight every battle if you so desire. Again, it changes stuff in the replay, which is why so many people like the games.
The gameplay isn't bad, out of battles - there's some interesting puzzles, though they're far between, but the boss battles are the main issue with the game, especially as some of them require you to do certain things that are not hinted at whatsoever and thus the frustration sets in. That said, at least even the boss characters are well done.
Not the best game I've ever played. Not even the best Game Maker game I've ever played, but it's pretty decent for an indie game and it has a lot of replayability. And if you like dating skeletons or making spaghetti and dodging bullets, you should give it a go at the very least.
Oh. Also, the music is pretty fucking great. And I will give props to the battle system in that every enemy has their own skills and special characteristics shown during. If nothing, there's a lot of thought put into each and every creature you battle and none of the monsters are like the others.
