RMN AND ESRB

Hey everyone, just had a quick thought in my mind about something. I've been searching through the game list on RMN lately for some new content to dig into, and through scrolling and seeing the various titles,it got me wondering...is it possible to add an ESRB rating system in the "Details" section of your game page some day in the distant future? I'm not going to speak of the game that got me wondering on this, however.

I know its not really necessary, as it is simply extra fluff, but I was thinking it would be cool to add ESRB ratings on games. We pretty much get new stuff all the time and lots of titles means lots of possibilities for content. While we do get "Genre" and "Flavors" in our game pages, one thing we don't know is age audience.

Since this is a free site with people of all ages developing and posting games together, that means that anyone of any age can access all content without knowing what kind of content they're getting into. Does the game have mild language, partial nudity, sexual themes, blood and gore, etc?

Again, this is something that should be taken with a grain of salt as I know it is just a thought; not something that will happen or anything of the sort.
The ESRB labels are trademarked so we couldn't use them legally. At best we'd have to make our own knockoffs and use those if we did.

A few people have chosen to include content warnings on their games which contain mature or adult themes, extreme violence, or other material that people may find upsetting. I wouldn't have a problem with developers being able to give their game a rating based on their own opinion or perhaps include what the game includes (strong language, extreme violence, etc.) If people thought that would be fun or helpful I'd have no issue.

It should be noted that it's not something the administration would police. How a developer chooses to rate their game would be up to them.

(Also 'Adult' or outright pornographic games are not allowed on RMN.)

Oh yeah! I totally forgot about the whole trademark thing. There are indeed other words to describe each age group, but I understand that it honestly wouldn't be worth the effort unless staff decided to do it anyways. Thanks for the swift reply!

Not gonna lie, I thought it said "ESBY" for a bit.

If you're asking that we include actual ESRB ratings on RMN's games, then that's a definite no. There's a process behind getting an ESRB rating depending on the method of distribution, so you can't just slap on the rating you feel is appropriate and call it official.

If you're asking that we create our own rating system where devs can rate their own games, then that's a different story (and a neat idea!). Game Jolt does just that, and it works pretty well for them. However, I'll echo Solitayre that it's not something we'll keep an eye on at all times. If your game is on Game Jolt, I see no problem with copy/pasting the rating you game it there to RMN for the time being (so long as there are no differences in content, obviously).

Game jolt has a rating system: I copied and pasted image for this RMN game:

I also found a website that can create your own ESRB rating.
Just google search "make your own esrb rating"

On an interesting note, the ESRB is not legally recognized in many countries.
(This is more of a western / American thing.)

ESRB is the American rating system. Europe has PEGI and I assume other places have others (I believe that Britain has their own, never wanting to be part of Europe and all that)
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I don't know what you mean by "legally recognized." They're a company that you as a game developer can pay to rate your games for you. Like IGN, except the rating is for age-appropriateness instead of overall quality, and they generally adhere to consistent standards. What exactly do you think America is "legally recognizing" about them?

We could have our rating system be a circle and the smaller the circle, the less mainstream appeal/easily ignored shit it has. If your game is super edgy, mark it with a pencil dot. Anyone who thinks these games won't appeal to them can avoid the small dots. Mario is somewhere between a bowling ball and a beach ball depending on which role Princess Peach serves.

I saw/heard some pretty nasty shit as a kid, hence why I played Conker's Bad Fur Day when I was probably 11-12. Does that mean I'd be okay with any content? No, but it's not based on my age; it's based on my experience.

It's that vore game, isn't it? I'm pretty sure nothing else like that has made it past the submission queue in recent history.
Just out of interest, what's the name of that game again?

No reason... >.>

I've a funny feeling Corfaisus is talking about this?
More like playing it and seeing if it's against the rules or not.
If people misrepresent a game and it goes through, then changes after that to become a rule breaker, retroactive removal is necessary. Obviously we can't catch every game that might break the rules without people, you know, letting us know about it.
