SCREENSHOTS FIRST SUBMISSION

Hey all. Just finished my game and have been denied on account of screenshots twice. What format, file size etc. are they looking for to approve my game submission?

The feedback I was given was that my screenshots were too big, then "poorly" cropped. Feedback also told me to check the forums for help, so here I am.

Thanks in advance for the help!

So, here's what the submission rules say about images.

The screenshots need to have variety - three screenshots of one location will not suffice. Title screens, splash screens, map art, or character art do not count toward your screenshot total (but are certainly allowed).

  • Your gameprofile has a screenshot gallery built into it. Uploaded screenshots are automatically accepted and placed inside your gameprofile's gallery.
  • You can later remove screenshots, but you will be unable to edit them.
  • We only support JPEG and PNG screenshots. GIFs, BMPs and others are not allowed.
  • Pornographic material is NOT allowed.

How to take a screenshot and submit it to RMN...

Though, it might be possible to upload GIFs? That aside, I can't say how large the dimensions can get before one would need to apply the CSS fix for large images, or if that code has an upper limit. However, as a point of reference, my own screencaps from my Ace games are 544 pixels wide by 416 pixels tall. Screencaps from my MZ games are scaled down, and end up being 612 pixels wide by × 468 pixels tall. Both are made by using the ALT+PRT SC method as described by the article linked above because I'm an old fuddy-duddy.
Having looked at your profile, the issue is that you've cropped the screenshots in a way that doesn't show the whole screen and when they did show the whole screen they were too large. Try using a graphics program to trim off any black bars that can sometimes occur when taking a screenshot fullscreen, then resizing the screenshot to be smaller.
Hope that helps!
Put one of your large screenshot in your locker. Post the link here. I'll do the cropping and resizing to give you an example of what a gamepage needs.
the two images above are effectively two examples of how I submitted screenshots.

Top one is cropped to remove my computers tool bar etc.

The second one is a non-cropped screenshot example.

Well, the first screencap might have issues concerning wall heights and, perhaps, the screen width, but, I wouldn't call it badly cropped. Room for improvement, yes, but, this thread is not for that purpose. Though, for what it is worth, the guideline I would use in regards to screen width in this case might be the dialog box, as it's approximately the same width as the game content screen. Maybe a little wider, as there's a bit of a buffer.

The second screencap actually relays what I'm talking about in regards to the game's screen width, actually. Absolutely get rid of the Windows taskbar, and the menu bar there. Focus your images on the game content window, like the first screencap.
Hi tlratchford,

I think 800x600 is a good size for screenshots. Most of mine have that size. So anything smaller than or close to 800x600 should get accepted.

Here is what I think would get accepted:
Screenshot13.png Image size: 814x518, File size: 68,9 KB
Screenshot19.png Image size: 800x611, File size: 145,9 KB

Here is how I did it:
I use GIMP but most image editing software will do. GIMP is free & open-source so try it, keep it if you like it.
1) File > Open --> open your screenshot
2) Press "R" to activate the Rectangular selection tool
3) Draw a rectangle that closely surround the game frame without the black side bars
4) Press "Ctrl" + "C"
5) Edit > Past as > New Image
6) (if image size is an issue) Image > Scale Image > set the Width to 800 --> click "Scale"
7) (if file size is an issue) Image > Mode > Indexed... --> click "Convert"
8) File > Export as --> give a file name that ends with ".png" --> click "Export" > Uncheck all option boxes --> click "Export"

Hope it helps you.

As Irog pointed out, both of those screenshots would be perfectly fine.

In order to avoid further denial, could you please crop the screenshots so that:
- You can see the whole game screen
- You cannot see outside the game screen
- You do not have the borders around the game screen.

Screenshot19.png Image size: 800x611, File size: 145,9 KB

^ A perfect example of what I mean.
I used GIMP to edit a new batch of screenshots to be the same as Screenshot19.png after Irog's edit and resubmitted the game.

Thanks to everyone for walking this old author through his first game submission. Looking forward to this new medium of storytelling.

Amazing - I've gone ahead and approved it for you now. Congrats on your first game submission!
Congratz on getting your gamepage approved !
Silly question I am sure, but figured I would ask first then attempt.

To share the game at a playable state; I should go to my games page and go to downloads, then add my games file. However, when I "deployed" my game to a desktop folder, I got several files. Which one should I upload? Or did I do something wrong when deploying?

You upload none of them. Compress the folder that was made with the deploy option with 7-Zip, or like program, and upload the resulting file. I doubt it's nessessary at this stage, but, if that file is over 450MB...

except from https://rpgmaker.net/submission_rules/
Games greater than 450MB cannot be accepted.

...you'll have to find an alternative place to host your game.
To note that if it's over 450MB you have a few options:
- make a dropbox account and upload it there, then use the dropbox option on the upload page
- link from another hosting site (say Mega or the like)
- use your locker to host (your locker can grow by submitting things to the site - reviews, resources, games, etc. If your game rates high, it will get more lockerspace, too.)
