ALCOHOL AND/OR DRUGS.
Posts
I figure we're all adults, or most of us anyway, so this should be a mature discussion we're able to partake in. And that's the disclaimer.
So yes, how do you guys feel about drugs and alcohol? How many drinkers do we have here? Recreational drug users? Anyone who has battled an addiction? Keep in mind, that this is not a 'I GOT SO HIIIIGGGGHHHH' topic, but this is a topic to discuss the various aspects of drugs and alcohol in our society. So in an attempt to keep this topic going in a respectable direction, I pose to you a topic to bat around for the time being (until the this topic shifts into another point of discussion).
How do you feel about the War on Drugs? If you live in America, you're well aware of the billions of dollars spent to keep the circulation, use, and spread of drugs out of American streets, schools and homes. In theory, it sounds like a great idea, but in practice, the War on Drugs is criticized because of its ineffectiveness, and a popular criticism is the criminalization on marijuana, which could be considered to be no more significantly harmful than cigarettes, alcohol, or even McDonalds (which are all legal). So much money is being spent keeping something a crime and imprisoning people when that money could be diverted elsewhere. What do you think?
I expect this topic to get pretty big, because there's a lot of things to talk about here.

I personally have never seen the attraction in using drugs. I don't like doing things that will potentially have severe side effects on my body. I don't drink either (watching drunk people is more entertaining). Besides, think of all the money I save by not doing either!
In my area, methamphetamine is the worst drug problem as far as production. It hasn't happened to me before, but if somebody set up a meth lab in one of my rent houses, let me just say that it's horrible on land owners. Not only is there the risk of explosion/fire ruining the house, all that excess waste toxifies the area, and the house usually has to be destroyed anyway. I would say we need to do more to stop it, but drug use is probably never going to be completely stopped. Marijuana is another big drug in my area (isn't it everywhere in America?), and I suppose that it wouldn't matter to much to me if it was legalized (I'm sure a certain firefighter that sells it would be happy though).

Meth is the worst ever. Meth epidemics are so brutally scary... they destroy the lives of anyone who uses, and those of the innocent people who live near Meth labs.
That being said, I think the war on drugs is a terrible idea. We're crowing our prisons with minor offenders, not dealers, but users, which I think is retarded. Also, just like in the prohibition, the fact that drugs are illegal helps out organized crime.
I believe that most controlled substances should stay that way. Meth, Heroin, Cocaine, these are drugs that ruin lives.
But Marijuana is only known as a controlled substance because of the racism of the time it was listed as one. Marijuana was primarily used by Hispanics at the time, I believe, and it was because of political maneuvering and not legitimate health reasons that it was made illegal.
Marijuana is more healthy than tobacco. It is better to smoke than cigarettes (though both are quite damaging to the physiology in that sense) and it is WAY WAY better to eat a pot brownie than to chew tobacco. I had a friend whose doctor told him it was more damaging for him to go into a smoky bar every week and not actually smoke than it was for him to smoke weed once a month.
Weed is an effective treatment for Cancer, Anorexia, Crohns Disease, and others.
If it were legal and controlled by the government, we'd a) deal a blow to organized crime and foreign economies, b) have a treatment available to the general public that works to alleviate symptoms of serious diseases, c) have more room in our prisons, and d) be able to profit off of what is already one of America's favorite pasttimes.
Those are my 2 cents.

I'm a good law-abiding citizen so the thought of using an illegal drug would never cross my path. I also live a sheltered enough life never to really have encountered any illegal drug thingies.
I'm not a big tobacco fan either even though I think the restrictions are going a little overboard. Last week the government proposed that showing images of people smoking would be banned. Now I don't mind people not smoking near me in places I sort of have to visit (restaurants and bars and the like) but banning smoking from images in order to not show smoking in a "positive context" that's just infringing on some rights I'm sure.
Fortunately that law will never pass. At least I hope it'll never pass, it's just too stupid for that.
As for alcohol. I like a beer from time to time. Being slightly drunk does make things more fun. Though being too drunk certainly doesn't. And being the only sober person in a group of slightly drunk people isn't very fun either.

I smoked a lot of pot in Canada. I used to in Japan but it's just way too dangerous here and I quit.
Drinking is good times. I gotta cut down on beer though due to my big beer belly. Or switch to whiskey earlier in the night.
I don't know enough about America's War on Drugs to have an opinion, but the impression I get isn't a positive one.

I think that the war on drugs is stupid and probably ineffective, but I myself am very anti-alcohol/drugs/smoking/etc. and don't tolerate it.
I haven't and don't smoke, smoke pot, or do drugs - never saw the appeal. Never even had my first drink until...oh, I was 19? I drink irregularily, averaging about once a month (12 times a year). Even that's been cut back to nil with a baby on the way.
However, from my armchair, I believe that "electric lettuce" should be legalized, monitored and taxed just like cigarettes. I also support government-run "clean" injection sites like Vancouver's InSite, for herion (and other) addicts. The brute-force crush-it-all approach hasn't worked any time a government body tried it (prohibition anyone?) and a better choice is to reign in the damage through legalization and strict control.
Prostitution should probably be legalized, too, for similar reasons. Drug use and selling sex are just some human vices that won't go away, no matter how much we wish them to. We'd probably be better off to face these kinds of things head on and dealing with it maturely, rather than "warring" with them.

I don't take alcohol or drugs. I've seen first hand of what drugs can do to people and I'm not keen on taking them any time soon. As for alcohol, it's something that's obviously ripe in society but that's not necessary a good thing IMO.
I can't comment on the War on Drugs campaign much but using taxpayers money on helping those that want to give up alcohol or illegal drugs should be seen as a benefit to the community.
As for Kentona's position on prostitution. I strongly disagree that accepting it would make things better as there's a good reason as to why it's seen as a detestable human act. America being strongly attached to Christian values I don't see them taking on your viewpoint unless it takes a much more liberal stance. Maybe that'll change with Obama.

Drugs and alcohol are great, every one who abstains from anything is a pussy, and this post is only 10% ironic/sarcastic. Seriously, meth and heroin and crack are the only drugs I genuinely think are bad in and of themselves. Even shit like coke wouldn't be so bad if not for its association with DANGEROUS CRIMINALS but that's the fault of whoever illegalized it in the first place, not the drug itself.
Also my mother is an alcoholic/drug addict and destroyed her life with booze and heroin. And I still feel this way. So. There.

And here's Max McGee here to explain exactly why YOU'RE a bad person for not toking up!
Seriously though, a lot of drugs are pretty goddamn dangerous, although it does depend on use and a whole bunch of other factors. Cigarettes are a bitch, even, and so is alcohol if you don't know what moderation is.
And why would abstaining from anything make someone a "pussy"? Does everyone on Earth have to partake in every single possible substance they can? People sometimes choose not to do things. Maybe someone just doesn't want to snort coke.

Drugs are a completely unknown field to me. I'm totally obvious, I wouldn't have a clue how to get any and I'm not up to date with the slang of it. They've never interested me in the slightest, Yeah I think they're bad and they break the law but people can do it for all I care. If it was a friend, I'd want them to stop, but I wouldn't disown them if they didn't.
Alcohol on the other hand is great! I'm more of a causal down the pub drinker with a group rather than getting completely out of my face (except for New Years and that was good! Walking home at half 2 because we couldn't get a Taxi) It's great to have a night out with the lads every now and then. I'm not that experimental though and mostly stick to beer, but whatever. I could live without it I suppose, wouldn't want to though.

Total annihilation of sluts...no really I'm not sure what to suggest in a society that promotes these things so I can't give an acceptable answer. Woe is me.
Alcohol isn't really a big deal at all, and while I understand why people choose not to drink, I never understood the whole ALCOHOL IS THE DEVIL WHOOOOAAAH I'M NEVER TOUCHING IT I ATTENDED MY D.A.R.E. CLASSES WHOOOAAAHHH
I mean why give it that kind of power? In many households (and in many European countries), a glass of wine is served with meals (and yes, studies have shown that in environments such as those, alcohol abuse tends to be MUCH lower). It's not really a big deal at all.

Alcohol IS a big deal where I live (London). Come down here on weekend nights and you'll see what the night revellers get up to. I'm talking about binge drinkers if you didn't know already. They're a nuisance and waste a lot of police resources which is why it's been in the national news so much.
Feld, I've noticed you start a lot of arguements with yourself. Then people join in. It's kinda funny how it works hehe.
I saw this thread after I rolled a huge spliff, so I'm compelled to say that I dabble in drugs and alcohol just as much as the next guy. Moderation is key with everything.
I drink a little too much... I've gotten alcohol poisoning twice. I usually have pure liquor in my cup and a drop of coke (Coca Cola or Pepsi, not cocaine xD) just to color it black. I've tried to cut down, but It's pretty hard.
What I have done though, I've stopped buying alcohol and I only drink if others buy for me... So I think I'm doing a little better now :)
Drugs on the other hand... Not for me. Never have I even wanted to smoke a cigarette or take a drug. I've gotten pretty drunk one time and ALMOST tried shrooms, but luckily my brother smacked me back into reality.

According to an online survey I took recently I drink more than 90% of people. I drink every night - almost always a martini (straight up, dry, shaken, with olive), or decent whiskey on the rocks (I like Jameson and Johnnie Walker). I also usually have a glass of wine with dinner. My daily alcohol intake is almost always exactly the equivalent of 4 to 5 drinks (a martini is about 3.25 drinks).
I do not feel the need to drink; I just like to! I never party anymore and I think the last time I was drunk was last summer.
It is also worth noting I had never had alcohol until I was 18, when drank to be polite, and the second time when I was 20 (it was again to be polite). I never bought alcohol for myself until I was 22.
I am completely uninterested in truly mind-altering drugs, like marijuana on one end and speedball on the other. I don't know why but it just doesn't interest me.
I have had alcohol poisoning twice, too. I completely remember the entire night, so I suspect that when people claim they had "blacked out" they are lying. Both times I was on the verge of dying and could not even move in bed without throwing up the following day and did not eat for over 24 hours - but I never blacked out.
Watch out for alcoholism man . . . you don't want to become an alcoholic and ruin the novelty of enjoying a drink. You can never go back.
