THE FINAL FANTASY XIII TOPIC
Posts
post=127740I can't speak for all "the new "gen RPGs" and whatnot, but what comes to FF XIII there's a clearly noticeable learning curve. The fast paced battle system is introduced a feature by feature, giving you approximately around 20 minutes at least to get used to each one. Same goes for the skill learning system. First you have only one or few paths to build on, but more open up a bit later and unlocking further levels of a specific path will become the player's choice.
I don't know about these new RPGs. To a guy that hasn't played one in earnest since FF7, these new FFs seems like dauntingly steep learning curves, and I usually just won't bother. I miss the good ol' days when all you had to do was select FIGHT, SPELL, ITEM, or RUN from a menu. *spits into a spittoon*
Same applies for new FPSs, and fighting games. Do you guys remember when you only had two buttons? A and B?
Though, I must say there was one obnoxiously hard boss I died to five times at least, and it gave the learning curve sort of bump.
Odin.

Most older RPGs are about 10000000x harder than new ones.
When I bought this the other day, man I felt embarressed for some reason. I think I was one of the only people who bought the Xbox version though haha. It was like a nerdy invasion on my self concious, not a bad game, but man this story is just flying over my head man, right off the bat I had no fucken clue of what was going on.
What's up with the super high jumping, anime bullshit as well. I guess I shouldn't be surprised but come on!

It's NOT 1992 anymore. Get with the program! =P

The program should get with me! Luckily the Wii understands me with with those quick little games and intuitive controls and unintimidating game mechanics.
I really wish I had the money to get this. I'm just having a minor gripe, and it's with the trailer: Why oh why did they use Leona Lewis for the music, of all the people on earth, they had to pick her -.-
I'm going to have to buy the game for me to find out for myself how well it plays/progresses. If only I hadn't spent the rest of my BDay money...

Thankfully, I am yet to hear any of her "own" songs ingame. I'm not sure if she sings anything else in the game, but if she didn't write it, that's usually good, since apart from her ultimately generic style, she is a good singer.
Also, I like this game so far. I don't really understand what's people's problem with the story. Don't be intimidated from the plethora of new names, (most FFs try that anyway) they are all explained rather soon in the datalog anyway, ( upt to five times, depending on their importance...) and even if you just play the game, there will be an explanation later on. Apart from that, I can't exactly say that the story is too complicated so far. I mean, there are quite a few games here on RMN that have a more complex story. So I think the problem is with the new words, which threw me off-balance too. Also, the main quest is revealed around the begining of the third chapter. There are a lot of white bits, but I like that in a story.
And one more thing: the stuff FFXIII does, the few battles then cutscene: that's exactly what I was talking about in Salerius's article's comments. There is the obvious lienarity, which pissed off quite a few fans, but I think they did quite a good work with keeping the player connected.
Actually he might be right. This game does not have a complex story by any means. Behind all of the flashy graphics and world history (which I wouldn't really call history since nothing is explained), it's just about fate and heroes going against their predetermined fate. Even though the story isn't great, the characters more than make up for it. They're easily the main focus of the game. If they weren't as good as they are, this game would not be able to hold its ground at all. I don't think many other main ff series characters can match them. If FFXII focused on the characters the way this game did then I would probably say otherwise but that game was a mess storyline wise.
Anyway, who got to the battle that is equivalent to the Seymour fight in FFX? It's on chapter 10. That was tough!

I suppose, if you're talking about the main narrative. It's not that complex, no. Entertaining, yeah. I wouldn't call it "not great", though. It's not the best, but come on, don't be cynical, it's pretty good!
However, I stand by my statement regarding the 'complexity' if we're talking about the sheer amount of content the setting has. There IS a lot.

Has anyone paid attention to the originality or creativity of some of the monsters?
Talk about dancing frogs or flans that have sirens on their helmets.
Sorry, they weren't frogs. More so other sort of lizards.
ps. why can't I get hide tags to work.
pps. frogs aren't lizards, I know.
ppps. Frongs may be.

I agree, I think it's good too. Not exceptional, but good.

There is a lot of content, but it's hm...I think it's mostly the names.
SPOILER:
fal'Cie: Angels
Pulse fal'Cie: Demons
l'Cie: Prophets
Cocoon: Earth, or a Cocoon literally
Pulse: Hell (it even says so in the description) or maybe Heaven/The Great Unknown
All the other stuff has a rather simple "IRL" match.
This is a bit forced and I'm not too far in the game, but I think these would be the conventional names for them.
END OF SPOILER
I agree though that it's a bit much to take in at first...
It's looks like somewhat standard anime stuff though. The characters too, sometimes, but it's true that they are very well written.
All in all, I still find the game great. (Although the damn battle rating system seem overly random to me, as well as the stuff I receive at the end...I mean, even if I get 20k points, sometimes, I get nothing, and if I'm super slow and get 2 stars, I receive rare drops just as often as with five stars. Or at least it seems like that to me.)
I love this game. I love the battle system, I love the characters, I love the graphics, the rating system annoys me though because I like to fight my way. I'm generally a defense before offense kind of person because ATTACKING DOES NOT PROTECT YOU FROM DEATH. Not in an FF game, at least. If this was IRL it would be 'end the battle before too much damage is sustained' but no MP, no discretion with my Cure spells.
I'm currently on Chapter 6. My main gripe is Vanille and Fang's accents. They sound like some attempt to be Australian. A failed attempt, because Australians do not sound like that. I LIVE in Australia, dammit!
Also, Lightning is the best character ever. If I could see parts of my personality in Cloud and Squall, Lightning compiles these personality traits, makes them female and sticks a younger sister into the mix, which makes her very easy for me to relate to.
(Almost scarily so.)
