Yeah that reaction was just uncompassionate.
seeing how someone plays your game reveals a lot, especially in regard to how the player reacts to the information you provide in the game.

If you notice them missing things you thought were obvious, for example, then maybe your design isn't as apparent as you had hoped or planned.

I would never expect such reaction from F-G.

I mentioned that VXP has self-switches (each event has four switches built into it, so you can copy-and-paste stuff like chests without making five billion unique switches). F-G said they were stupid and he'd still use normal switches for chests and whatnot.

And yeah, LTs show you exactly what is wrong with a specific area. You can't possibly get feedback better than this.

EDIT: Just to clarify why this is: I don't see the point in watching a series of videos when you could make it much easier for me by summarising any problems you have in text form. This would save both me and you a lot of time. I do appreciate the effort, though.

Real-time 1st impressions always give stronger opinions/feedback than just feedback in text form. If you gonna make your game better, you have to understand how the consumer reacts to your game and what you can do to avoid those negative reactions. Pictures speak louder than words. Just having opinions in text form can't allow you to improve better than if you see it live.

So when your game could be better if you watch videos instead of text opinions, but you choose to be passive, stubborn and naive and read text opinions instead, it's your huge loss that your game won't be even better.

I agree. When I showed my game to a few real life people I got some real insightful and helpful responses on balancing and even pacing.

My favorite comment of that was "...What the fuck is a tincture?"(In response to a healing item called "Plant Tincture"). It doesn't sound that funny here, but the way it was said was hilarious.

They're not inconvenient when they're done well. I really like watching YDS's videos because she's cute and funny while still being informative. It's like watching/reading a Let's Play by Brickroad. They're fucking amazing. (See them all here.)

Okay, YDS isn't as terrific as Brick, nor is she doing this for the purpose of entertainment, and it's useless to argue with you, but you suck.

Although I'm not of the opinion that first-time reactions are as informative as well-thought out comments - if something isn't important enough that you can write it down in an intelligent manner with the aid of hindsight (hindsight is a wonderful thing) then it probably isn't important enough for the developer to trouble themselves with - my main issue with Let's Try videos is how inconvenient they are for both developer and reviewer.

Also, how is this reaction "uncompassionate". I was just trying to save YDS some time by allowing them to focus on videos that the developer would appreciate...

1. What if something is important but the person is unable to properly express at what exact point this problem comes up? No matter how hard you wish it to be true, your game isn't perfect. Take all constructive criticism you can.

2. What about those who are working on games but seem to have the same sort of problem that the game being LT'd has? Surely they could benefit from it, such as a previous LT taking the "dark past entity while staring over a cliff alone" scene and writing it off as just stupid.

@F-G: The problem with 'well-thought out comments' is that not everyone has an easy time making them. Writing informative reviews can be quite difficult, and unless the author took good notes, chances are they'll forget to mention something. Many people can't even be arsed to leave a 'well-thought out' comment on the gamepage!

But an LT captures all of it. It shows you exactly how a new player may react to your game and can expose things you might never hear about in a review. If you can't see how this is beneficial to developers, or you can't take the time to see how someone actually plays your game, then I can't help you.

Though if you would watch YDS's videos, maybe you'd realize how tedious and annoying some of your minigames are.

And ignore Despite. He's stupid compassionate.
I shit myself when I get a comment! How you don't want a video is beyond me. @_@

Also may I say that a video with the person's stream of conscience is a much more accurate portrayal of their thought than a review could ever be. Think how often in a review you list every time an issue pops up; it's just not what you do. You just say "X in particular..." instead, and the reader loses all those details.

Plus I find it very helpful to hear people's groans and giggles as they play. It maps out what's too long and what's good much better than words ever could.

But, hey, everyone's different, right?
Hi YDS.

When you get time, would you do an LT of one of my games? I'd like either One Night 2 or 3 to be done, or else either of the two Legionwood games. I don't really care which game you do.

YDS, you totally should.
What can I say, I like the feedback. The more suggestions I get the better the games can be.

And unfortunately I am one of those above. Every time after completing a game and I feel like writing a review here, then I realize I have a writer's block all of a sudden. My mind is fuzzy and I couldn't remember what I actually want to write about. Then I'll just "bah".

The thing is, not everyone has the patience to write reviews and give out clear answers. Also, you should know this better, "Pictures speak louder than words" This phrase holds strongly true for videos vs reviews. Words alone will never truly portray the true feelings of the players. You have to see it live to truly understand why yor players don't like certain stuff and all. And after that, if there's anything you don't get, you can always clarify!

The thing that I'm pissed with you is, you don't even give videos a chance. How can you simply say you prefer walls of text to videos when you didn't even give YDS's videos a chance and say they're a waste of time. At least watch a few first before you decide whether videos or texts are better. Don't be a pessimist. No harm
trying to watch the videos first. Unless you tell me, F-G, that you have tried the videos method before. If that's the case, then I'll rest my case.

(well sorry for the long rant. I just feel F-G needs some knocking of sense into, unless he continues to be this pessimistic and naive)

It's as if you completely ignored what was already said and just stuck to your point without any consideration of others. Do you think that everyone has a photographic memory of all the terrible shit in your game and can pull from that at a moment's notice? If you believe this for a minute then you are lost.

Though, with that point aside, there's even the benefit of not having to suffer through games if we can just watch the LT and realize that it would be worth neither the time nor the stress.
