YDS' LET'S TRY THREAD

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Hmm. But most of the new and popular ones already have LTs done by other people.

Honestly I wish there was just one big Let's Try topic for everyone, so we could all easily cross-reference which games had been done already, and people could make general requests if they didn't want to ask a specific person. I tried to start such a topic when the whole LT thing was starting but then everyone ignored it and made their own, and now we have well over a dozen topics and it's a pain in the ass.

Maybe LTs should be on game pages...

YDS, I have to say that I pity your poor soul for having so much bad luck in Eternal Paradise! Never has any else told me that the battles were too hard or unbalanced. It's always been the exact opposite: too easy and nicely balanced! That, and your issues with saving that you seem to be having! Ah ha ha.

Just take the Gaze enemy out first (or Silence it), and then do the same for the Elec Bug before going for the Abyssals or any other enemy. It's definitely not a game where you can hit Spacebar and hope to win! (For those of you who just might do that!)

Please, Ephiam, you have a slow status in the rm2k3 dbs, do you not see anything wrong with that? With having slow on an atb that is already absurdly slow?

YDS was the first/one of the first LTers, so she naturally got a number of requests right off.

She's also stuck with it longer than the rest with more frequent updates and such. There's something to be said for persistence!

Hey LockeZ. I actually did your game because you requested it a long time ago but to be honest I didn't upload it because a lot of it was just profanity because I just didn't really "click" with the humor in the game.

Ephiam: I don't know, dude. I think your game is really hard! And I am not the only one who have said it. It's nice that you are trying to move past the space/heal phase, but there are some problems.
There will always be problems! That's not to say that I don't do my best to try and fix them when they arise however. With a few more games like this, I'll probably have gone up a notch.

Just keep in mind that status effects are NEEDED; Blind, Slow, Confuse, and Seal are lifesavers!

Other than that, I can't say I've heard from too many people who've considered it too hard! That's why I find it strange.

I haven't tried EP yet, I did play Ephiam's Boss Project, and yeah, mashing spacebar = auto death. He really does force you to use your status-changing spells. Admittedly, it can take a while to adjust, but I didn't find the battles to be too hard/slow, especially since he rewarded you for taking risks (Charming a boss? That will never work -- oh snap, it does?!?!)

But that was a different game...
Actually, EP is pretty much near exactly like my Boss Project games. It's just that this one in particular has a story, and is more of a dungeon crawler than a boss rush (like BP5, which I have discovered a new-found love for!)

No boss or enemy in either of my current games are immune to every status ailment, which is why in EP they're eventually given (the bosses, that is) an auto-remedy event in battle that activates every 20~ turns (or 30-35~ for more difficult bosses).

Eh, I'd still probably learn something from watching it. But if it's not something you want to upload then that's fine. I should probably just quit asking for one. One of the main things my game has going for it is being nearly commercial length, and I'm not sure how many really want to upload an 80-part Let's Try.

Ok. If you say so.

Anyways, two new videos for Eternal Paradise.

What do you mean the current version? I downloaded what was there? If you have another version you are working on, than ~that's great~. I generally speed read through dialog boxes but yes, I do miss things sometimes and I admit it when I make a mistake.
I've got to say, if you're finding it to be painful to play through EP, then I'd advise you to stop. If you don't want to be doing it, then there should be no reason why you are! I'm not paying you to do this! =P

And I got some information from Video 7 that could have possibly lead you to win the battle:
-Didn't heal characters to full HP before the boss.
-Had enough money to buy an Anti-Silence/Seal relic for Alex, along with Berserk+Slow, and maybe even a WeakATK/INT spell!

Maria and Alex matter the most in that fight, and if they survive the first turn without Silence (or dying) then it becomes so much easier.

From my experience, each time I battle the guy, my entire party gets silenced.

I'm not expecting to change your mind, but the only thing I want to point out, F-G, is this:

"Alright, I'm playing the game...hmm, there's something that doesn't work for me....ok, I liked that....argh, that really pissed me off, I'll definitely write that down....ok, I can't stand playing this game anymore. That's it." And that feedback is gone, it will never make it to text, and you'll never see it.

YDS is doing a rare thing. She's approaching these games as though she's someone browsing the website looking for games to play, and she plays them in that manner. The difference is that she is obviously pushing through a lot of content that other people would have quit a long time ago because she's genuinely doing this for developers (the same way that reviewers do). And we get to hear those crucial moments where someone makes a decision about a game (I'm sure it's pretty easy to tell when YDS would stop playing a game if she were anyone else).

I strongly believe this: those first five, ten, twenty, thirty minutes are the most crucial minutes in every single game, hands down. These videos give you an inside look to the success of your ability to hook your player. The HARD thing, I admit, is being able to look past the overwhelming negativity in what she's saying, it'll seem like it's impossible to hook someone who's picking apart little details in unimportant stuff like chipset and music choices (she does have some obligation to keep things entertaining). But there's still valuable information regarding things that are dragging down the experience for the player, and the points at which the hook is lost (for example, I've seen her stop playing a game because of battles that are far too difficult, as well as in the middle of story scenes because she simply hasn't been hooked into caring about what's going on.

Just my twenty cents (adjusted for inflation).

I haven't seen a single LT that I would call overwhelmingly negative. Or even vaguely negative. I haven't watched all of them, but I've watched a bunch of LTs (by YDS and other people) of both good and bad games, and they are full of all extremely good advice. It is way more enjoyable for me to see someone telling me how to improve than to see them just frolicking through it obliviously. People playing my game doesn't help me at all unless they tell me how to improve it.

My only problem with LTs is that I wish they would continue to the end of the game. Most RPGs - amateur or otherwise - don't really pick up until hours into the game, when the gameplay has developed to its full complexity. Personally I am conditioned to ignore the first few hours of any game when evaluating it, because I know the gameplay will get more depth later.
Shouldn't the game be fun from the start???

Shouldn't the game be fun from the start???

Many RPGs don't pick up until you've at least gotten past the second town or its equivalent. This is perfectly normal in any game commercial or otherwise, but especially RPGs. One example I can think of is pokemon, where you're stuck with tackle and growl for the first part of the game, but it picks up once you get a team going and start evolving shit.

This can be also observed in other media like books/movies, where first you might not be into the characters or you have no idea what the story is about (which is expected... because, you are in the beginning of the story), but then the characters or the plot twists get to you and you end up enjoying it later. To have a game that just hooks the player from the very beginning is an extremely hard thing to pull off, and it isn't fair to ask for every game. If a game can pick up after a while then it is a job well done.

To expect instant gratification every second of playing something is a pretty juvenile mindset.
