WAYS TO IMPROVE THE COMMUNITY/MAINTAIN ITS AWESOMENESS.

I think you're underestimating our community, KA. I agree that screenshot topics aren't really the way to go, but I don't think it's because RMN is and always will be filled to the brim with insufferable babies. Have you seen some of the other RM communities? RMN isn't too immature for screenshot topics. It's just not something that we want to do.
Have you seen some of the other RM communities? At the very least, they are more constructive in their endeavors in regards to making games instead of crapping up screenshot topics, killing useful site feedback topics, waging flame wars inside review comments, running off two administrators, bitching twice about an underdog game winning a contest (Misaos and the FG drama), and soapboxing on the forums all day. Oh yeah, tack on shitting on other communities to that resume as well.
So yes, I'm truly disgusted in the state that RMN is in.
It's just not something that we want to do.Repeated requests for a screenshot topic indicates we want to have one. Problem is, history has proven it can be nothing but a shitstorm. The recent RMN Dramafestsâ„¢ don't indicate that has changed in any way.

And how you feel is fine, really. I think this is an appropriate topic to express that concern in, and for everyone to sound off their thoughts in. Honestly now that I think about it this could have been in Site Feedback, but hey. I think this is a good topic to let it all out in one place and to work towards solving the site's idiosyncrasies. However I do agree with WIP and the sentiment that there's a point where there should be less talking and just more game making/playing/developing/what have you.
I think the absolute best case scenario would be for everyone to drop the bullshit and just develop/play/review/discuss games, but since it seems there has to be a sounding off on what's going on in the community, well, whoop, here it is.

For the record, I agree with most of what WIP has had to say. There is simply too much pointless bickering when we're supposed to be a community about developing games (and related branches of talent thereof).
Personally, I feel the forums and commenting in reviews really need to go. They are the source of almost all RMN Dramafestsâ„¢ and RMN can easily do without them. Popularity contests like Featured Games and Misaos also need to get canned until people learn to accept the results, whatever that may be, with sportsmanship and dignity. There is nothing more childish than to be crying that an underdog game no one was expecting won a contest.
I don't think cutting off our nose to spite our face is the way to do it. We should be able to communicate like 90% of communities do without having to have our toys taken away from us like children.

Debate is what drives discussion. Regulate the tempo and tone of the discussion; don't just amputate it.

The Misaos are by design a popularity contest, but the featured game is not. If the featured game was a popularity contest, we woudln't have seen that lovely backlash that Legendary Legend brought out. I didn't necessarily agree with the result, but the ensuing reviews and lambasting was too much even for me... But I think we've had more than enough douchey holier than thou crap in this thread, so how about we cut that out, ok?
Debate is what drives discussion. Regulate the tempo and tone of the discussion; don't just amputate it.Outside of Videogames and Artistic License & Literature which harbor very interesting topics, most of the other forums have been home to one form of RMN Dramafestâ„¢ or another. Moronic Stuff has been an especially bad offender as of late with mostly destructive results.
As for the reviews: Someone posts a review, someone doesn't agree with the review
The Misaos are by design a popularity contest, but the featured game is not.I used the term "popularity contest" very loosely, but my point still stands: They are contests, and people apparently cannot accept the results unless AAG was the winner.
If the featured game was a popularity contest, we woudln't have seen that lovely backlash that Legendary Legend brought out.I'm not sure if I'm following you right here. As far as I can tell, even if LL had won the Misaos, this current dramafest regarding the Misaos will still have ensued in all its fury (if not more).
I didn't necessarily agree with the result, but the ensuing reviews and lambasting was too much even for me...Precisely my point. People need to learn that, every so often, an underdog wins a contest and that shooting it down (or anything else for that matter) is anything but classy.
But I think we've had more than enough douchey holier than thou crap in this thread, so how about we cut that out, ok?I am merely pointing out the large elephant in the living room no one seems to want to talk about, but I can drink to your suggestion.

You are honestly the most whiny, overreactive person I have ever seen in the RM scene. Such wanton destruction, raging across the digital landscape like plague and wildfire! I can feel the site coming apart at its seams from the terrible chaos unleashed within the dire walls of the Moronic forum! I cannot possibly grasp the notion that objection, dissent, and even moderate strife (disharmonious words typed on a forum) are sometimes required to build something better! When will the drama stop! This fragile old boat can only weather so many waves!
ps: pretty sure screenshot topics are gone because wip wanted development matters to take place on game profiles, making a clear separation between community and game hosting. i have no idea what this inane talk about 'required levels of maturity' to post screenshots in a forum thread is about.
As for the reviews: Someone posts a review, someone doesn't agree with the review and optionally calls out the pitchforks, hilarity ensues.
I'm sorry, but no. Not everyone is Legion/Max Mcgee.

What I mean is that Legendary Legend was put up as a featured game despite being an unpopular game.
Precisely my point. People need to learn that, every so often, an underdog wins a contest and that shooting it down (or anything else for that matter) is anything but classy.
I didn't like what happened after Legendary Legend was put up as featured, but that doesn't mean we should stifle conversation in the name of "sportsmanship". Let people be dissatisfied; just moderate the tone of the debate so that it doesn't devolve TOO far.
You're overreacting.

ps: pretty sure screenshot topics are gone because wip wanted development matters to take place on game profiles, making a clear separation between community and game hosting. That was only one reason. People were clearly getting tired of the constant shitstorms that ensued in the screenshot topics; had the shitstorms not been such a common occurance we still might have screenshot topics today.
but that doesn't mean we should stifle conversation in the name of "sportsmanship". Let people be dissatisfied; just moderate the tone of the debate so that it doesn't devolve TOO far.Soapboxing on the forums like a broken record isn't really much of a discussion, but I digress.
Anyway, I'm done, I've not been even following my own advice. Why am I here taking part in a small dramafest?

Where's Tardis' avatar when I need it?
While you are one of the Only Sane Men here, Kingarthur, I believe you are forgetting about the Rule of Drama. That aside, I believe that rmn's most pressing issue concerns Fallen Griever. This is a cool game.

YOU RANG, BRO?
also, ciel has a point KA. you seem to be a... really big part of every single pissing match on here. like, conversations that weren't destructive get that way after you come in and make a bunch of longass response posts telling everyone why they're so wrong and this kind of behaviour is unacceptable. your high horse bro, i suggest you get off of it. you seem like you might actually be a pretty intelligent dewd and might have something positive to contribute to the community in general if you'd ever stop being so damn defensive and reactionary about everything.

KA is upset because he is incapable of creating a "game blog" on a site for game dev. i understand.
Well, anywho
I think the community, and this community in particular, would be a lot better without the cynicism, negativity, and pessimism that has a tendency to plague our members. Yes, this includes talking shit on other communities and members in IRC, and giving snarky replies and generally being dicks to new members who don't quite get it yet. Yes, I've been guilty of all of the above myself.
Why don't we try to be friendly, encouraging, optimistic, positive, and helpful?
Discuss?
no seriously i want a serious response to this
Actually I'm just going to make a new topic about this

This made me smile.

Nothing to do with Game Development. Moved.
