@Lensky: The first screenshot intrigues me - is it some sort of data password system, or you use it in-game? The mapping in the other two is simple but nice. Why do you use such a wall auto-tile, though? Are the characters in a building?

In all seriousness, it's looking pretty nice. It kind of reminds me of the Water Crystal Tower from Final Fantasy V.

Here's a screenshot from my current project, Realms of Arcanum. It's a jungle-like dungeon!



@Hesufo: I love the trees and the foliage you're using for your mapping, but I find this particular screenshot to be a little bit "busy". It may be the variety of ground types used (I can count four, not including the vinewall tops), or the combination of different colours (too many types of green! Usually one for the wall, one for the floor, and one for placeables is good). But that's partly a matter of my personal preference: as you noted yourself, I like my maps simple :-3

Now for some more constructive advice. I would change how your trees are clumped (they seem to be in twos, which is an unnatural growth formation) and I might get rid of the mossy tree stump, as it doesn't really match the other treestyles you're using. A "foliage fog" might be nice, but I'd try to make it subtle. Use one at your own discretion :-)

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I don't know that the problem is that it's too busy, per se, it's more that so many of the objects are almost exactly the same color as the ground. I'd leave it exactly as busy as it is, but make the palm trees and ferns a darker blueish-green.

Also, I seriously hate those vine cubes.

The vine blocks are ugly and takes away from the screenshot as a whole, I agree you need to differentiate the colors so the plants and etc stand out more against the ground.

Yeah. A lot of the individual tiles don't go well together. The actual composition of the dungeon seems just fine (although the clusters of trees aren't exactly gorgeous), but can you at least try desaturating a bit for a poor man's fix?

What Craze said, the map is actually pretty cool, so don't get down trodden. I like it, just the blockiness of the vines things makes it look so funky.

Ok for the shadows, Khos. Would you mind telling me why making the grass a different color than the grass? Wouldn't that unnecessarily expand my palette?


I forgot to respond to this. Anyway, having them the same color isn't a big deal it just helps to separate them. Also I noticed that some things have a black outline and some things don't, seemingly at random ( the stump and the sign for example. )

I would pick a method and stick with it, since consistency is very important.

Thanks a lot for the comments, guys. I'm gonna work on desaturating some of the jungle tiles. I'm not sure I can work with the blocky vine walls since my spriting ability is bad, but I should give it a go perhaps. It could go to lengths in fixing a lot of other blocky tiles from the VX RTP.

SPEAKING OF DEAD TREESSSSSSSSSS
This is from my XP project which is using the XAS ABS script.
It's going to be loosely based on Dante's Inferno and this is the City of a Thousand Infidels where he will be punished for killing "heathens" in the name of god.

I'm going to eventually change most of the default stuff, like the HUD and the main character, but other than that I'll be using the XP RTP.

(oh and p.s since it is a ABS I'm going for elements of Diablo and all jars and etc can be broken open for loot)

Yeah me too, a lot actually. It's really well done.
The main ground tile isn't even sand, which is why you might notice the green in there, but I think it works fine too. (Probably switch it at some point)

Sand would have been too cliche IMO. That grass tile looks really good.

Maybe some grass clumps, though. There are some good ones in the VX/Ace RTP you can easily yoink to spice up the ground (both autotiles and single-tile clumps. I suggest using both).

natural stuff grows in clumps with some space between, due to mycelium or root clusters; basic example using Ace tiles:

Notice how everything has a sort of central origin point and expands from there? It would look better if I actually layered with events more (you can see where I just overwrote tiles where events would normally go to layer them), but hey, whipped it up in 3min to show you.

I got the idea and I'll mess with it and post an updated screenshot later(hopefully not embarrassing myself)
It's perfect too because since I am using the sand/grass tile the grass patches will blend perfectly.

edit: might mess with some shadows too, see what I can do

@InfectionFiles it looks empty. You could also mirror the trees and remove a few branches to make different versions of them.
