THE SCREENSHOT TOPIC RETURNS

Posts

I haven't done a map in a while, so I thought I would try my hand at it again. This is from Jonnie91 and my new game; Lullaby. It is obviously missing all the events that make it look a bit better, but I'm kind of wanting judgement on the overall map.

This was done using parallaxing, if that makes a difference on your opinion.

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

@obsorber: See, I'm willing to buy the "guy with a sword in modern day" bit up to a point, but the platemail and cape are beyond that point, unless your game takes place in an alternate history where electricity and motors were invented but firearms weren't.

@Shaddow: Nice layout and good use of space. Those stairs do not look right, there shouldn't really be any visible black on the stairwell, all that black area should be stairs. Upper room is obviously unfinished, so hard to comment on, but the control room looks amazing. There's no door to it, but maybe that's on purpose, is it a secret room that you get to by pulling a book on the bookcase? Either way, put a bookcase or something in that lower right hallway, it's too empty.
@LockeZ - Actually this doesn't include any of the events like doors, the upper room is actually going to be a trophy room, where you unlock things based on accomplishing certain goals within the game. The stairs do look off, I had to adjust them for walking purposes so you would actually walk down them, but if I adjust the railing it either goes into walking space, or end up looking very strange. As off as this looks, it is the best I could really accomplish.

This is parallax so you have as many layers as you want, right? Edit the tileset, and change that black fill around the stairs to transparent. Then put stairs underneath everything else, until all the black section is stairs.
I understand what you are saying, I'll give it a try.
I took what you suggested to heart and here is the updated version, this is an in game screen shot so you can see the events too.

edit: ack sorry for the double post, forgot I posted just before this, can someone merge these?

It's not bad, I suppose. It is very open and sparse for a forest though, it looks more like a plain or maybe a mountain path that happens to have some trees around.

There is nothing really that makes it stand out in any way either, it's all very very standard. Taking a few chances, making something unique and adding more trees can really spice things up.
Thanks, I wasn't really aiming for a complicated map. I wanted it simple to keep related to the battle map. It's meant to fit with this screenshot below.

Like a Forest Plains kind of thing.
That makes a lot more sense, also it may be unrelated but those sprites are just amazing!
Thanks, Minkoff Style Fully Animated with battle cry effects.
Fishing System
Finally the fishing system is complete. Basically all you need is to obtain a fishing rod which you can buy. I might make it that you can find one as well in a specific part later in the game.

-First Screenshot is to prompt you whether you would like to fish but this is only possible if you have a fishing rod otherwise it denies access to the prompt and says you can't fish without a rod!!!!(typical)

-Second Screenshot shows player actually fishing and obtaining fish is by chance. You have a percentage of not getting any fish, a percentage of catching certain fish more commonly, rare fish less commonly and hidden items such as gold and silver coins which you can also sell for gold. Fish are good as you can perform minor heal on the field map with them, just not in battle. Also selling them for Gold and stocking them for healing on journeys is a neat way to make and save gold early in the game.
(Combat Specialists tend to be good at everything, their magica gives them an advantage over others...)
(I might possibly make some variations of the fishing spot.) (The Yellow Dot basically means fishing spot.)

Man I would have to really, really have nothing to do to fish in a video game
I dunno, I always found Breath of Fire's fishing games a bit fun. And Dark Cloud's ones.

That said, why not incorporate bait for better chances at getting good stuff, so that it's not completely random chance?
The only fishing system I ever really cared for was the Link's Awakening one, and only because it's not reeeaaally a fishing minigame.
Blobofgoo
Legs are a burden. Return to snek.

Ugh. Harvest moon fishing. So rewarding yet so boring and time consuming.

this game will never be done at this rate
I am trying to decide which battleback is better. What do you guys think ? :D

^ I'm partial to the second only because it has a surface for them to stand on. I take it you're going for an Earthboundy sort of feel in battles?
