Wait, you're making a Ghostbusters game?

author=LockeZ
Working on Iniquity and Vindication recently. Spent like six hours trying to figure out how to resolve a giant gameplay hole without causing a giant plot hole, and eventually decided I need another dungeon between dungeons 4 and 5. Oh well. At least now I know what I want to do... which was enough to inspire me to actually do real work on the game instead of just brainwracking. So I got the paranormal investigation lab done! And also sprited one of the characters, the little ghost girl in this screenshot.

My problem is that every time I draw a map, I feel the need to make a bunch of new tiles for it. In this case I actually pulled up a video of Ghostbusters to see what was in their lab, and then took screenshots and shrunk down some of the objects to make a lot of the clutter in this screenshot.
I just thought why not make a small full-RTP game, and here's a map I slapped together a couple minutes ago. I haven't RTP'd much and I bet my mapping is not quite there, so I'd like to know what you people think. Please.

I'll never change. "Me" is better than your opinion, dummy!

As hard as I try I can't spot anything wrong with it. :<

Maybe as a suggestion, adding some o' them 1x2 trees. :o

Welp, I caved and decided to go through with my plans to make the games art consistent, by degrading it all to my mspaint cel-shaded style

I forgot to patch the background parallax for the second scene with the Myriad, oops! Will fix later. This is a WIP, currently.

Also thanks to LockeZ I found freesound.org which has allowed me to drastically improve the audio.
Designing the new battle screen for Fabulist.
I think the info and gauges at the bottom are kinda boring. They could be better.

Also, comparing the old Hiciel sprite with the new one. Some issues about her hair and colors were fixed and thanks to the use of 7 shades instead of 4 she looks better than ever.
(omg censored pixel nudity beware)

@Tungerman: What are you using that particular map for? For instance, is it going to be in a cutscene, or something the player actively explores?

The only thing that bugs me about it so far is that stark horizon line on your panorama graphic. I'd pick up any image editing software and draw a slight blur over that line, so it meshes in better.
@Avee: I don't understand the point of 7 shades. I understand 4 shades, as it is effectively the GB palette, but 7? Restricting yourself using an arbitrary number of shades doesn't serve much of a purpose. The new sprites certainly look better, but almost all the changes can be replicated using the original 4 shades.

edit
@Dookie: Obviously that world map is amazing, but I have one VERY IMPORTANT question: Currently, it looks as though the people from Rubberland built the tire wall, but the gate seems to be built by the Carpetosians, given its orientation and angle (also the ruins on its eastern side). dat dun make no sense pal
edit2:
is it a giant hubcap? if not why not

I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I'm making a game where you get in a sword fight against a giant shark wearing sunglasses, five minutes into the game. It's just that type of game. One of the party members is a paranormal investigator who is basically a Ghostbuster.

this horrible map
who knows where does it come from

(it's from a commercial game)

My first guess is that you remade one of the Dragon Quest world maps in the RTP tileset. Or one of the Final Fantasy Legend games, or some other ridiculously old-ass RPG from the "every dungeon is a tower" era of RPGs.

It's not ultrabad, but I certainly wouldn't post a screenshot of it on my game profile.
The small patch of river into the mountains reminds me of Final Fantasy I, where you had to sail the canoe into the mountain to get into the volcano dungeon.

I actually don't know yet =_=
Probably not exploration. I want to try to step out of my genre of choice and make a genuine turn-based RPG, with battles & stuff. Try walking in others shoes.

Oh well the parallax is not a problem, I'll change it later. I just put a default one for the time being so that the map looks more or less complete.

It's all about size; Survival of the fittest and all that jazz.
@S_W love the design. Are they like upgrade/different versions or are you redesigning them to be smaller?

@Kaempfer Yeah it was supposed to be a Giant Hubcap.

Man, haven't you been doing these mini pixel mechas for all of ever? Where is the game containing all this pixely mecha goodness?
@Neok
Yo, haven't seen you too in ages. I checked your user profile a few months back but thought you kinda left.

The game well, it got err.. "lost" in the middle of upgrades.

From the regular Rm2k3, to custom/modified Rm2k3 Battle system (like your game or Magi's) to picture based CBS. Arguably it would be more "Innovative" (take it with a box of salt though) than regular battle system; but also a pain to code/make.

And the pixel process is really tedious (Tiring! Shading (damnit!) !). Not to mention the "regular" size (see leftmost pixel) took up ton of space in the screen. So I can only have like, 3 character or something before all you see are robots. And I was planning to have 5 person in battle.

So that common size = fix everything/make a new common size. Couple this with a few games (and an upgraded pc), I got burned out with the game.

TLDR ver : Vaporware ahoy!
EDIT: More like Duke Nukem Forever

Deciding to redo a ton of your graphics is definitely a pretty common cause of vaporware.

I did. I came back recently, like a few weeks back. Using VX Ace now. And speaking of which...

mention the "regular" size (see leftmost pixel) took up ton of space in the screen. So I can only have like, 3 character or something before all you see are robots. And I was planning to have 5 person in battle.

...Would not have this problem with VX Ace, which allows up to 640 x 480 :D.

(Fair warning, I'm like Craze now in that I tyrannize everyone and their cats into migrating to VX Ace.)

Apparently at some point during development, unbeknownst to me, I apparently got to the point where I am now using 75% or more custom tiles??? I don't know how this happened. It was not on purpose.

(need to replace that lamp and the gray platform...)

That looks really great, LockeZ! The only thing that seems a bit out of place to me are those traffic cones. Their red colour is just a bit too bright compared to the rust and dust all around them. Maybe you could make them appear a bit more dirty and more clearly shaped?
