Woodhaven, as it is called now, was founded by a retired adventurer in the distant past in the notoriously dangerous Forest of Shadows. It might have been a crazy plan, but the adventure brought together a community near the river that cut through the forest where tradesman would normally travel the river for days without rest. It made the small town flourish, but it never outgrew its small community roots.

The Founder died protecting the village against a former companion and his bandits. It was a battle that nearly exhausted the town of its resources, but they entombed their fallen hero and the villagers that had fought beside him in an old tomb. It was not right to leave the bandits to the carrion and monsters of the Forest of Shadows, plus it could draw monsters dangerously close to the village so they entombed the bandits in lesser places of the crypt.

Though the years that town has grown back to it's former size due to the unrelenting work of those that remained instead of fleeing back to civilization. It has become a tradition after the last harvest before the first winter snows for a group of villagers to travel to the crypt to retrieve the "Founder's Sword" to bring back to the village so that the spirit of the Founder can help guide and protect them during the winter months.

This became a ritual of sorts and spun into the "Founder's Festival" where the chosen pilgrims begin their journey in a solemn ceremony then return to a remembrance of the dead then in the last celebration of life before the town is blanketed in snow. Some of the village would go off ahead with the help of the town wizard to set up illusionary and fake traps for the pilgrims to overcome in a journey meant to mirror that of the Founder's final days.

It has been four years since the Mayor of Woodhaven has sent young adults on the journey for their rite of passage. This is an exciting year for the village, and many people have gotten involved in their own ways to the festival as they prepare to welcome these young adults into the community. Nothing could possible go wrong...

In Review.

I have recently been thinking about this game which had a lot of potential in my mind but didn't get to reach it due to several factors.

It is riddled with bugs caused by converting the base project from the RPG Tsukuru 2003 to the official steam version of RPG Maker 2003 which caused aeveral database errors.

It was the first event that I led the team and we needed up having some headbutting over personal opinions on game development and design. It happens as we are all developers here with our own opinions.

It has been 16 years since I really played with RM2K3. It shows... I have become so much more accustomed to MV (and a lesser extent Ace) that several odd things hung me up which messed with the development schedule and play testing.

So that being said, why am I making this blog post? That would be just to say that I am working on an MV version on the side when I can't focus on Legion Saga development so that I stay in the habit of developing as it has been a hassle to get back into a routine since I took a hiatus.

Just something to look out for at some point. Not sure if I will reuse this page or submit a new one for the MV Game which will be titled differently. For now I am leaving this in complete status until I have more development information and screenshots for the new version.

In my game. On the site. Called The Road to Woodhaven.

That being said I used a random name generator for it so I know it’s probably just dumb luck.

Edit: By the way, the game crashes when I try to load it because apparently vehicle files couldn't be loaded? I managed to get it to run by opening it in rpg maker 2003, though.
That's not supposed to happen. Those vehicle files were definitely there before. Let me know if you find any other bugs.

Well, not sure if it's a bug, but none of my skills are showing up in battle, but they are on the menu.

There's also this:

I think the main character is supposed to be saying the mage's name here, not his own.

Edit: Also, there doesn't seem to be battle music in Forest 2.

Edit 2:

Edit 3: no battle music in this area either. And stimulants don't seem to be working.
Edit 4: okay none of my items actually seem to be working. Though I guess they're maybe battle only? I'll test it out.
Edit 5: nope.

Edit 6: I doubt I'm supposed to be able to walk across these.

Edit 7: When the dark dude shows up and stars battle... he doesn't actually show up. You win as soon as you press fight because he's not even there. I love that the main character mentions how strong he was afterwards, lmao. He was so strong you didn't even have to attack.

Edit 8: Anyway, just finished this. It's pretty decent save for... you know.. the gazillion bugs I came across. I don't know if it was time constraints that prevented you guys from testing properly but there was literally an endless amount of them. I might do a full review, but I dunno.
Thanks, Frogge.

Working on the fixes now.

Version 2.2 Updates
1. I used the wrong /n, wee. Fixed
2. A couple music files were not included for battle music as it changes depending on your level and I didn't catch it. Fixed
3. Forgot to set the Direction Fix on the headless guys. Weee. Fixed
4. Forgot to set who can use items in the items. That's a fun one. Fixed
5. I added the Battle Command to the actor but due to my inexperience with 2k3... I didn't add it to the Battle Screen section. Finally figured that one out! Fixed
6. Forgot to add the actual final boss enemy to the Troop when I was finished up the battle stuff at midnight with very little sleep in the last two days. Fixed
7. There are probably a few tile issues so if you find somewhere it seems like you can't walk then it was likely missed. Being able to walk over the mounds in the Underground

It was a random name from a list that Link came up with when I was originally looking at Haven as a name.

Okay...

  • So, Warrior's skills are the only skills that work.
  • Can't escape battles.
  • Encounter rate is nuts.
  • Some enemies are unbeatable, though that may be down to the fact that Priestess and Mage's blessings and magic don't work.
  • Still alive, even though dead.
  • Cannot progress due to unbeatable encounters.

Overall, the story looks like a cool idea. I'd like to see a version of this working right.

That's for the feedback. I figured on some maps they were so small that a slightly higher encounter rate would be fine but I'll alter them. I set the Crypt's encounters so they wouldn't be so many but I will push it out even more.

Looking at the database... Yeah... things aren't set up quite right for Priestess. Which encounters are unbeatable? I will throw up an updated version in the morning to fix the encounters.

Now I am not sure why escapes aren't working... There are only three battles that are set to disable escape. Ogre, Skeletons, and Dark Knight... and I checked all the maps they are set with escape allowed.

I'll have to look into the still alive not dead... is that enemies or allies?

I added a new update that should help with the encounter rate and blessing/magic not working right.

It's the two wights and not sure what the other is.
Possibly escape worked for some. After seeing it dark enough, I may have simply thought all battles were unescapable.
Allies die, but may still continue on the map, in their dead condition.
I think my version 1 would have been better xD The one with all battles disabled except the 3 scripted ones. I'm afraid to play this with random encounters.
That wouldn't have fixed any of the issues with the skills. Or weird quirks like allies not dying. There wouldn't have been any reasons for the scripted battles if they were just one hit kill battles. We could have just made them cutscenes.

Most of the issues that came up were already bug fixed. Though I dunno why allies don't actually die or escape isn't working...

If anyone is having problems with the battle system then you can use Num 9 key to set your party at max level and finish the story by blowing through the battles. Call it "Story Mode".
Well, it would have fixed the problem with skills because there wouldn't be any. So instead of a buggy DBS ruining the experience, it would have been basically forced story mode. But that is only for deadline purposes and submitting a working complete game to the event. Otherwise, yes, the DBS should be done right eventually. At the time we had skipped all the battle related quests and items. So putting in random battles didn't really help the game overall.

So yeah, let that be a lesson people, DON'T CONVERT OLD 2K3 GAMES.
Been playing awhile. Couple things I noticed. It appears that one of your screenshots was taken while in "Event" mode.
Suggestion that doors that cannot be opened could have a text, maybe as to why."We can't go here, yet", Locked", "Must need a key" etc.

I like the music though I generally play without music. Very full and deep sounding.
Enjoyable game play.

Is there a full screen option?
Nevermind(if you ever see this). I just realized how old this game is
.
How do you leave after getting the Mithril Shield?
Nevermind(if you ever see this). I just realized how old this game is
The game is cool but there is a bug in the tomb some charpak won't load and when u drop to the chest where is the mythical shield there is no going back from there u get stuck no where to go some passages lock's like u can go through them but they r blocked by an invincible barrier
I've been wanting to do a remake of this game, but with all the work on LSDX or just life things I haven't been able to do it. However, since I was thinking of doing a Seasons IV Event game it got me thinking about this game again.

You can now leave the room with the Mithril Shield in the lower left hand corner (southwest) where you came in. It was always there but for some reason it was originally set to teleport you to one of the stairwells but it is now properly set to teleport you back to the Underground area from hence you came.

If you can ever find which room this happened in let me know.
