Momo’s Adventure October Update - Lateness, Mapping and Melon joins the battle!

Lateness

It’s another update but only a month late! In my last update (August), I stated that the next update would happen in late September. This is not the case so I’m pretty much a lair at this point.

Lateness with RPG Maker games happens to a lot of us. We all have our reasons, but it is important that we not let these reasons stop us from making the game. It is certainly better late than never. However, it is also important to stay on schedule as best you can. It shows that you have discipline and your audience will take your game seriously. Well, I have no audience so what do I know?

Mapping

Mapping is already with underway for chapter 4. Some of the maps and cutscenes are completed. The biggest challenge is to create a new town, called Life Kingdom, while retaining the look I have in mind. The town is located inside a forest and has wooden houses and tall trees. In the interest of time I will have to make it generic. In the future, I will have to look for a tileset or attempt to design one. Suggestions are welcome!

Melon joins the battle!

This section will contain spoilers so if don’t want to get spoiled. Please skip to the next section.

BEGIN SPOILERS

Melon is an Elite Knight of the Life Kingdom. She is a loyal protector of her kingdom and is loved by everyone. She is the personal guard of Princess Lily. She also acts like a big sister and is responsible for training her. However, due to her carefree nature, she spoils Lily and often goes easy on her.

Melon is a ranged character who wields a special bow called Spirit. She can fire arrows using her life energy. It does not deplete her HP. However, her damage is all magical so her normal attacks will not be effective against magic immune or resistant enemies. However, she has some skills to deal with these types of enemies.

Melon is also an excellent healer with an arsenal of skills that can debuff enemies.

Her weakness is her attack type, moderate-low HP and defenses. Her weapon and one of her accessory slots are locked with her own special equipment. They will be upgradable in future versions of the game.

Melon is an old character that I have designed for my manga, Rising Sword (still working on it). She is making a cameo appearance in Momo’s Adventure. Below are her most recent design and sprite sheet along with basic info.

END SPOILERS

What’s next?

Melon’s sprites are almost complete. Her database is fully done so she will be ready to battle soon.

There are other characters I have to design for the chapter but I will have to make them generic for now using the RTP sprites. The most important thing right now is finishing the chapter.

That’s all for now. If you want notifications on updates, please subscribe. Thanks!

Momo’s Adventure August 2019 Update - Chapter 4, Item Database Overhaul, and Bug Fixes

Hello everyone!

It's been a little over a month since the last update. Things are going slow, but okay. There's several things to discuss so let's get right into it.

Chapter 4

Some maps for chapter 4 have been polished more since the last update. Unfortunately, the events, loot and the monsters have not been created. This is due to the huge item database overhaul. More on that later.

What I can say about chapter 4 is that it will be just as big as Heart's chapter, if not bigger. There will be a good number of large maps to explore with secrets and great rewards. An optional mini dungeon will be added as a side quest.

Item Database Overhaul

The item database is close to completion. Rare items (blue) have been removed entirely and many items have been revised and created. There are currently 68 weapons and 136 armors. All the items have to be rearranged in the database. In addition, all chests, quests and monsters have to be edited to give the proper loot.

Item rarity consists of:

Common (white text color)
Legendary (orange text color)
Sacred (purple text color)

Weapons types consists of:

Swords (Warrior Momo, Shinichi)
Maces (Warrior Momo)
Wand (Mage Momo)
Dagger (Karin)
Miscellaneous (Shinichi)
Bow (Melon)
Hammer (Heart)

Armor types consists of:

Helmet
Body
Gloves
Boots
Accessories (2 slots)

Bugs/Issues Fixes

YEP Equip Core - Previously, if a character did not have full HP/MP and equipped a weapon or armor that increased max HP/MP, the character would lose a few points of HP/MP everytime the equipment was equipped or removed. This issue was due to a line in the code that was changing the rate of the HP/MP values. It was causing the values to be rounded. Special thanks to the members of RPG Maker forums, especially Aloe Guvner, for solving this issue!

Disable Map Regen by Trihan - This plugin disables HP and MP regeneration outside of battle. However, the plugin unexpectedly removed states after walking a certain amount of steps. This issue has been fixed. Special thanks to Trihan!

Warrior Momo's Falchion - This powerful sword was accidentally given at the start of the game, making Warrior Momo's path a breeze. This Falchion will be replaced with a Wooden Mace in future versions. Please avoid using this sword if you are playtesting the current version.

What's Next

Once the weapons and armor are all arranged, the database will be complete. Mapping and events will take priority. Character art and some redesigns will be worked on as well. I want to start incorporating character portraits so the dialogue will be a bit more lively and interesting. I have said before that they will be added after everything is finalized. However, I think it would benefit the game if I include some at least.

Example of a character portrait and expressions featuring Sayuri:

Upset

Unfortunately, due to work and unforeseen circumstances, the next version (2.1) will have to be delayed until late September. I previously stated late August, but with a big job coming up, that isn't possible anymore.

Anyhow, thanks for reading! I'm always looking for playtesters so please give this game a try. Don't forget to subscribe for updates!

Momo’s Adventure June 2019 Update - Chapter 4, Item Database Overhaul, and Future Playtesting

Hello everyone!

Development of Momo’s Adventure has been going at a decent pace. Special thanks to Mallory16 for being the first (and only, sadly) playtester. Because of your in-depth feedback, a lot of improvements have been made possible!

Now here’s an update! The first blog!

Chapter 4

Several maps for chapter 4 have been completed. This new chapter will take place in a new world outside of the school. It features a new playable character, new dungeons and small side quests. This chapter is expected to add 1-2 hours of additional game time, totaling the game time to 4-6 hours.

Item Database Overhaul

Unfortunately, the database for all item types is becoming messy. This is due to the fact that I have not made all the items and allotted enough room for them. So as I went on making this game, I added more and more items under each other. This is of course not an efficient way to handle the database, but I did it anyway. Now, I have to pay the price.

What this means is that save files in the future will become corrupted. This is not a problem if you’re not a playtester. If you are an existing playtester with a save file, I will have to make a debug event that will reset your inventory and give back the appropriate loot.

As for the items themselves, a lot of them have been made more useful and fun to use. Potions and support items are now stronger. Weapons and armor are in the process of a huge overhaul. And to make the database easier to manage, there will no longer be items of rare rarity (blue items). Some of the existing rare items will be removed while others will be converted to common rarity (white items). With the removal of rare items, legendary items (orange) will be slightly more rare. Sacred items (purple) will remain, but they will be limited, meaning that I won’t make a sacred item for every tier of weapon or armor. They will only be available for mid to high tier items. So for example, the wooden shields or plain shirts you find in the beginning of the game won’t have a sacred variant. The exceptions to this are accessories and of course, higher tier weapons/armor.

Future Playtesting

As stated before, save files will be corrupted so a debug event will be in the works. Current and future playtesters who complete the demo before the next patch hits will be able continue right where they left off in chapter 3 when version 2.1 arrives.

I hope to gain a few more playtesters. I can playtest games in return and provide feedback. I know it’s not much, but it’s the only thing I can offer at the moment. Perhaps I can provide a free copy of the game if it ever reaches that point.

Version 2.1 is expected to be released sometime in August 2019.
