Warning: This game does contain dark and disturbing themes including rape and torture. Be warned that it is quite dark and blatant in the depictions of such.

Torturing. Causing pain and suffering. Taking screams and tears from a completely subdued human being.
That's the hobby of people from a community called The Dungeoneers. Dungeoneers have their own private dungeons in their homes (hence the name), to which they take strangers - those naive enough to fall for the dungeoneer's charms.
Members from this community won't settle for just executing their sadistic game. They must show it to other people. For that, they videotape their torture sessions and post it to online forums, to get other member's appreciation and reviews.

BE:D tells the story of Verge, a dungeoneer depressed because he's lost his touch with doing decent videos, and because the love of his life, Daily, couldn't care less about his existence.

Gameplay
BE:D has two distinct gameplay aspects:
--The first one is similar to a Dating Sim, in which you have to approach strangers on the street and seduce them to go home with you, mainly using dialog choices.
--The second one is more like a puzzle, and it consists of setting up your dungeon to torture your victims. Your goal at this stage is making your victim leave the dungeon completely shattered psychologically and physically, but still alive. That's what the Dungeoneers call a Beautiful Escape, and it's the ultimate goal of the torture sessions. You can also get them killed, get them too depressed to leave the dungeon, or even have them leave healthy enough, but your viewers won't appreciate your videos as much. It's all about the delicate balance between too much and not enough.

Gameplay elements are tempered with lots of dialogs and the resolution of Verge's love story.

After Suzy and freedom, Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer was also translated to korean.

It's worth mentioning that after these translations I started learning korean myself. 한국어가 정말 아름다운 언어입니다!

Recently, a russian translation was also made, which is pretty cool. For some (cultural?) reason, BE:D seems to be very popular in Russian. They even made a russian Beautiful Escape: Dungeoneer Wikipedia page!

Coincidentally, this week a fellow Brazilian asked permission to make a Portuguese translation for the game. For some strange reason it bothers me a little (maybe because I should me making this translation myself?), but it's amazing that the game is reaching people from all over the world like that.

Random fun thing: the guy who made the Russian translation mentioned that Verge looks a lot like Eridan Ampora from Homestuck. I didn't even know what Homestuck is but the resemblace is disturbing!

woah, this looks wicked sick. how did i not notice this until now? i'll definitely give this a whirl.
Actually after the 1st one I always managed a beautiful escape, it isn't too hard to pull off.

oh wait, I forgot, I sort of "cheated" by giving a save point in the dungeon, so I can always retry if I doesn't pull beautiful escape off (this just saves time though).

In terms of difficulty though, I can probably manage a beautiful escape with very few items. (it irks me to describe it but...) Start with a hard hitter and end with drills and drown. The latter traps allow you to "skip it" if the health/will gets too low. Improvise in the middle and stuff. Even without them, you can always assure one with a bit of trial/error method (which I frequently need in the beginning, thus why I place that save point). So yeah, it's not hard imo (I feel a bit bad now, Thanks videogame cruelty potential! :( )

Good luck on the contest bud!

SPOILER
Yeah, it's kinda funny since the 1st time for the last one I tried putting nothing to see what happens. So that's how it works!
s_w:
I understand the map issue. My bad.

It's indeed impossible (or extremely unlikely) to get a beautiful escape with the first victim. If you said it gets easier after that, I'm guessing you managed to get a few ones? Although most people couldn't. I'm curious about the difficulty of this for other people, because getting a beautiful escape is extremely easy for me with 5 or 6 items.
And yes, a beautiful escape does make a big difference in scoring.

SPOILER
If the last one escapes (beautifully or not), Verge stops the person at the door and says something. If the last one dies or goes in despair... Verge doesn't show up. But that's just that, minor difference.

Barefists: I know what you mean. That's exactly what I was trying to escape from with this game. :D

I understand about not wanting to post a copy of the review here. And I really appreciate that you are talking about this game on other sites!

No problem. Probably because I run a review site and keep playing the same games over and over again in different presentations, I get particularly intrigued by bizarre ideas. :)
Just finished it. (Dangit, I should have Edit my post instead)

Damn, it's so friggin bizarre. I guess you succeeded in making me feel intrigued and feel uneasy at the same time.

So far:
the graphics are great. I like the effects and the lighting. The world map could use a bit of a path though. Because it feels a bit random the first time you try to navigate it. It's much better after you get used to it though.

I couldn't manage to get that "beautiful escape" for the very first person, but it gets easier after that (more items). Still, does it really make a difference perhaps in scoring? Also I read that there is a slight change at the end if
you make a beautiful escape for the last one

is this true? because I tried it and there is nothing different from what I see.

Good work, it still gives me a few chills.

Maybe it's because I renamed the exe file to Dungeoneer.exe. Try changing it back to RPG_RT.exe

Thanks, now it works just fine (the title on the top left was "untitled" before I changed the exe to RPG_RT).

Thought it was a case of bad download (or virus) so I re-downloaded it like 3 times.

I don't get this. The game run just fine and great if you open it normally, but for some reason it won't appear in the Rm2k3 game list? (i.e. if you try to find/open it via Rm2k3 it doesn't show up).

Strange.

Well, there is. When health level is below threshold, it goes yellow and blinking. Same for will. If they're both yellow, you get a beautiful escape.

Yep, I saw that. :) I was referring to something that is visible on the gauges the moment I begin the level, like a line on the gauge or something, so I have a goal to hit. The issue I had with the yellow markers was that I didn't know they existed until I hit it - so I didn't aim for it, I ended up meeting with a lot of game overs. :(

Though you might want to consider posting it here on RMN as well.

Well, I also hold the shameless desire for page hits over at my site as well, so I didn't want the review to be available elsewhere. :P Hope you understand.

But I'll finish the game and see if I can write up my experience in a revised form for RMN. :)

Great review! I think you got what the game was intended to be. You probably want to finish the game to see if you'll want to add to it. And definitely, as calunio said, you should post it here in RMN.

Amazing coincidence. I had just googled my game and found your review, right before you posted this comment.
Thanks a lot for the review!
Though you might want to consider posting it here on RMN as well. I was gonna show it in a blog post.

About something you said:
Maybe a better solution might be to leave explicit marks on the gauges that exhibited threshold amounts required for a Beautiful Escape.

I read the synopsis at imdb.com and while interesting, it's probably quite different from this game.
I'm not gonna play this game, but anyone who likes it should really go ahead and watch the movie "Martyrs." Horribly demented, very French, very similar in theme.

Yeah, I agree. Since you mention the idea of Dating Sim in your game description, you could also use "Simulation" as well.
Do you guys feel I'm right in tagging this game as "Puzzle" and "Adventure"?
I hate myself for liking this game. Or I feel like I should, anyway.
Might I ask you to add a spoiler tag to that comment?
No, the story is very linear, no different endings.

SPOILER
There's just a tiny difference in the last scene if you let the person escape instead of killing it.
