Snail's pace progression.

Ok, so I'm not making progress as fast as I would have like to, but I'm getting somewhere at least, albeit at a snail's pace. Regarding the character portraits, only two have been done ( coloured and what not ), but I'm not happy with the other sketches I've made. Sometimes having too high of a standard for my work can really bog me down...

But I have started writing some scenes for Chapter Two now, and I've reworked the intro for Chapter One for that 'player hook' that the current version of the game is lacking. Think I held back a little too much on the suspense there. I tend to have a knack for writing cliff-hangers. And everyone loves a good cliff-hanger. :)

Here's an in-game test of Laine's new portrait. I know it's a bit big, but if I resize it, the image will lose its quality. Then again, the portraits are the central focus for the 'widescreen effect' cutscenes. Now I have to do an emoticon set, too.

And this is the current overworld map. Still a WIP. Mapping overworlds are a real pain, though. >< So long...

And this is the other portraits that I'm not happy with at all. Patrick ( the guy in the middle ) is done though. Resized down to 50%.

So, that's it for now. :)

He'll still be Rolf to me! But yes, a snail's pace is better than no pace at all! :) World map is looking snazzy--it definitely looks like a world map! :P

Too bad you're not happy with the portraits at the bottom. I thought they looked pretty good. But yay! I'm excited for more progress.
I guess I'm just not too happy with Siglud's armour. It looks a little... iffy to me. I'm still having a bit of difficulty drawing armour and such. But practice, practice... Or maybe I'm just a little too obsessed with obtaining commercial-quality artwork. Guess I need to lower my standards, eh? ^^
I, too, suffer the curse of the fangame-makers; always obsessed with mimicking a style of art. Trust me when I say this; If you keep practicing, you'll develop a style that resembles the Fire Emblem art, but eventually you're going to tweak things around to your liking to create a unique and fresh blend of styles.

This is why I'm so happy that you're using your custom portraits, because you don't want a FE clone, what you want is to take the things you like out of Fire Emblem and turn it into your own :> And when that happens your portraits will rival (or surpass!) the 'commercial' portraits :>

Edit -Wow we were a minute apart o-o

Honestly it doesn't look that bad! When I saw it I thought "armor!" so I think you're doing a swell job. I think most of armor comes from coloring too. Then you can add little details and whatnot. But yes, don't be so hard on yourself. Understand what you can do at this moment and be okay with that and then slowly start practicing different things and all that and soon you'll be getting better and better.

In addition, don't fall into redoing portraits every time you see yourself a lot better. That'll get you in a cycle of always redoing things instead of getting things done. Try to keep doing what you're doing without going "well that I drew a month ago looks crappy, time to redo it!". I think you'll do fine though.

And I agree with everything Miracle said up there too (ninja'ing my post!).
I found an awesome ref for armour, if you're interested. B)

As for portraits - are you colouring them and what not before resizing them? You oughta scan them at a high resolution and then colour them there, and THEN resize them. It improves the quality, in some mysterious, wonderful way. <3

The world map is looking great! I'm a big fan of games taking place in one part of a world rather than over the entire thing - this is looking lovely! ;w;
So the party is going to be reverse harem :D
Although, when I think about it, 3 guys and a girl is standard stuff. Just, usually the girl is a support char.

I actually prefer to resize first and then color (unless the big portraits are used for like websites or something like that). Mainly because I have a knack for coloring not the closet to the line so when I resize, there are suddenly little gaps in the coloring.
@Ron: I do agree with you, I am far too hard on myself when it comes to doing these portraits. I should just be happy with what I've done so far, but I can be a notorious perfectionist as well. Rather do it twice over, and colour once.

@Miracle: I have no intention of making an FE clone. ^^ This is not a fan-game. I repeaat, this is not a fan-game.

@Emmy: Thanks for that ref. I'll be sure to check it out. With regards to the colouring of the portraits, I have one teensy little problem. I don't ink in my work before I scan it in, since I don't have a tablet. And yeah, I first colour it, then resize. Bummer. ><

So... I'm asking one of you ( or anyone who is reading this, and has a tablet ) this. If I sent you the hi-res original pencil sketch ( 2338 x 1700 pixels ), could one of you guys ink it in, then send me the digitally inked, non-coloured sketch? I'll do the colouring. :) I'm sure the quality will be ALOT better. ^^

@Dyhalto: Yep, steering away from that typical RPG party set-up. But I do have more characters planned. Female, btw. Could possible include a ditzy female sage who is not so ditzy as she seems, and a super-hyped up 'Genki-Girl'. They are Expies of ( well, one of them anyway ) some of my favourite FE characters. ^^ No harm in that, right?
Maaaan, I would totally offer to do sweet inking for you (because, yo, extra practice for me! 8D), but my tablet pen was stupidly left at home when I headed back to school after the holidays. OTL

If you're not in a terrible rush, I may be able to give it a try for you in a week or so...? My family is coming up to visit and bringing my poor baby back with them. ;v;
@Emmy: I'm in no rush, I can wait. It gives me more time to do the other drawings. I've already started on the new character portraits. What you guys see in the above post are just test-runs, since I know I can do better than that. ^^

Off-note: I'm sadly disappointed about the current VX Awards over at rpgmakervx.net. I didn't get nominated. At all. Real damper, you know. :(
Don't let the VX Awards upset you that much Luchi.
Thanks for that, EE. Yes, I know I can't let it get to me, but it's still a bit of a downer. Stupid you know, allowing something like this to bother me...

Then again, I can't let the 59 or so subscribers here down, now can I? :) It actually means alot to me, you know. So thank you to everyone who has subbed so far.

Aw man, Luchino, I thought for sure you were going to be in there! :( This kinda makes me sad I didn't make time to do some nominations. *hugs*
