This is a game for those who love to explore, experiment, and discover. Welcome.

Story:

You have seen and done things that were
never supposed to be, and I have come
here to offer you a choice.

You can try and go back to your lives as
they were, fighting the Knights and
relieving people of their possessions...

...or you can help me.

Help me make sure that what happened to
you doesn't happen to anyone else ever
again.

Arrym is a Wraith, one of an elite band of thieves notorious for taking on big jobs. He has all the talent in the world, but what little motivation he once had has all but dried up.

Branak has the opposite problem. He is a Wisp, a newly inducted member of the guild, with seemingly misplaced dreams of greatness. He is determined to prove himself in the eyes of his superiors and take his place among the Wraiths.

They are partners.

In the midst of completing a job and evading their sworn enemies, the Knights of the Thorn, they are presented with a bigger job. Much bigger...and far more noble than they would typically agree to.

Grant me the resolve to return to the treasures
I cannot yet obtain, the ingenuity to obtain those I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

- Wraith Prayer

Battle System:

Almost everything on-map in Canvas is evented, including the battle system. Use an assortment of pixel-based attacks and abilities to dispatch your enemies in a variety of ways. You can anger them with arrows, stun them with bombs, throw them into each other with gusts of wind, and more! Each on-map enemy was carefully crafted with its own behavior, movement style, and methods of attack to provide the player with challenging and often thought-provoking encounters. Your on-map weapon will change appearance based on the weapon you have equipped.

Features:

  • Character swapping- each with their own unique "tool" and advantage/disadvantages when it comes to combat (Weapon range, attack speed, etc.)

  • A variety of shared tools/abilities acquired throughout the game, useful for combat and puzzle solving.

  • Item crafting

  • Area maps

  • Bestiary

  • Glossary

  • Characters grow based on your AP allocation

  • Breaks the 8th wall!

  • A free-jump system that works hand in hand with my...

  • Robust elevation system- Ties in with projectiles, tools, line of sight, jumping, etc.

  • Puzzles aplenty!- You will need to experiment with your tools, and then come up with new and creative ways to use and combine them.

  • Mini-games galore!- As you explore the world of Canvas, you will discover many evented mini-games to add variety to the gameplay. They are all fully-interactive game systems as opposed to pass/fail based on a number or stat systems.
    • Lockpicking (2 versions)
    • Mining
    • Fishing
    • Pickpocketing
    • Blacksmithing
    • Persuasion

*The game is around 15 hours long.

The game is unencrypted, and for those who own Rpg Maker VX Ace, I encourage you to poke around and explore.

Thanks for playing, Dyluck! I appreciate the feedback. Are you saying the game crashes when entering or exiting the save screen? If not, I'm pretty sure the bug you're encountering is a combination of the moghunter weather script and the script that allows you to switch the lead character on the map scene. Every time you switch characters it refreshes the map. If it happens too often too quickly, the moghunter script takes issue. I decided the cost-benefit was worth it, and nobody has mentioned it yet, but if it happens more frequently in the future, I will probably remove the weather script. In the meantime, if you wait a few seconds between switching characters it shouldn't happen again (only in Grimwood). Sorry for the inconvenience.

I fully agree with you on the fighting being clumsy. It was an experiment to see what I could do with the engine through eventing. All attacks and abilities are pixel-based, only the movement isn't. I like to think it will grow on you =). Either that, or you'll get used to it. But hopefully you'll find the puzzles only get better as your available abilities and tools expand.

As far as the story goes, I needed time to pass in the story between the events in the cave and what happens next. There are two main reasons, which I don't want to spoil now, but I'll be happy to give you my rationale down the road. The motivation of not being ratted out to the Knights by the Mayor was my justification, however flimsy.

Thanks again for taking the time to play and leave feedback!
Looks interesting! I'll play/stream it, and if I like it hopefully make a full LP since it seems that it doesn't have any yet.

It happens right at the moment I choose "Yes" for "Divulge Deeds"? I've tried it many times right after loading a fresh save, so I don't think the character switching is directly related to the problem.

I think you could just try a Hide Screen or stop the weather before opening the save screen. I'm pretty sure the Moghunter script had a save/restore weather function too.

@koko10 - Thank you so much for taking the time to play all the way through Canvas. You are only the 2nd online person to confirm beating it, so it means that much more. Glad you liked it.

@EdgeOfChaos - Always good to hear from an old Manifest supporter. It would be great to have an LP of Canvas out there. I hope you like it enough to warrant one. It comes with a walkthrough in case you get stuck early on, and for what it's worth, I think it gets better as you go, gathering more tools/gadgets/abilities.

@Dyluck - Thank you for the clarification. That is strange. In all of my testing, watching various family members play through it, and of the feedback I've gotten from online players, I have never heard of that happening. I'm sorry for any frustration that issue might have caused you, and I hope you're able to continue on. In my first game, when people mentioned having one-off glitches like that, sometimes just re-downloading the exact same version of the game and going through the unzipping process again resolved the issue. Not sure why, but it often worked.

I'm stuck at Barriad pass at the second save point. To the north, there's a chest I can't reach. To the west there's a metal chest above a half rope, and a yellow button that needs something heavy to hold it down, but there's nothing nearby.

Edit: Nevermind, I saw your included walkthrough.
It's hard to guess what wind does, because when you get the wind power, it's only shown to move a pot one space away.

Glad you were able to continue on. The game definitely encourages experimentation with each new gadget/ability that you get. You will discover some pretty interesting combinations.
I don't have much time to play so I won't finish this for a while I feel... but I'm really liking it so far!

- Character writing is pretty good. I like how the main characters at least have a distinct personality without being overly simplistic.
- Interesting storytelling framework. A story within a story!
- All those minigames! Lockpicking of course is right from Manifest but pickpocketing, fishing, mining, and all the puzzles of course are cool. I don't like mining as much, but maybe that's because I just haven't figured out a strategy for it besides guessing.
- We need a way to Page Down in the glossary, too much scrolling (or maybe it already exists, idk)
- I like how stealth and backstabbing is rewarded so much.
- Never used crafting yet, but I may try it in the future.
- Walthrough and item guide are awesome. Thanks for doing that again, gonna be extra helpful in my 100% run.
- Bosses are surprisingly interesting.
- Combat stuff feels kind of clumsy but I think that's because RPGMaker isn't really suited to this type of game.

Thank you very much for the feedback. I'm thrilled you're giving it a go! You can use the Q and W keys or page up/page down to jump ahead or back in the glossary. Please feel free to ask any questions as you go, or just stop back in to give updates on your progress. Take your time and have fun!

Just finished the game. Thanks for all your effort and hard work. I can tell there was a lot of heart put into this game. I made a review as well, and while it's pending, I wanted to give you a separate bug report as well:

Bugs:

(Minor)
-in some rooms you can push objects into the only exit and get stuck

-at Fort Thorn, you can just repeatedly jump past the guards at the front gate. I don't think this was the intended solution...

-frozen enemies move sometimes and aren't detected properly when moved on top of buttons sometimes (Ruins of Resolve, I think?) Might be an upper level puzzle where you didn't expect me to use freeze)

-after using slow in pickpocketing, one of the shirt buttons got stuck on the bottom of the screen. It was Rank 4, and the first time I ever used slow, so that's why I suspect slow was a factor

-also in pickpocketing, if you grab treasure near the edge, a fast junk could suddenly hit you and you may not notice or even hear the hit sound

-sometimes holding shift while fighting makes you stuck in direction facing after releasing shift, until you press shift again

-casting fire and then quickly toggling to the next element and casting again causes fire to be cast again. Ex: Fire, Wind, Fire. Didn't seem to happen if I start at Wind or the other elements.

-Gossimer peak first screen, you can go below the bridge and then come up to the upper platform.

-Gossimer Room 6C, you can't just turn while standing on the button. Not sure if bug, or meant to solve with arrow? Also if you stand on a button and try to jump over a teammate, you jump into the same spot as him.

-sliding arrows/ice: you can cheat if you jump and then turn right away, and combined with pushing frozen enemies, you can walk on some sliding areas you didn't intend

-harp has long delay for use, even after effect is over. Not sure if intentional, but annoying for puzzles

-sometimes after killing enemies, especially in boss fights, they leave behind an invisible spot that you can't jump over

(Major)
-game can crash at Grimwood Forest when using save points or switching characters/abilities too fast

-during fight with Peanut, one of the flames at the bottom can knock you into the ceiling tiles, getting you stuck forever

-at the pub in Cove, if you talk to the guy sitting at the bar, your extra action buttons don't work anymore

-at 5e of the cove, if you use the raft it dumps you in the water if you just finished teleporting

-teleporting in general with Umbra can get you stuck in walls if hit by enemies, or you use teleport repeatedly again too fast in various directions

-when fighting Elphea, if you lure her to jump at you when you're on a raised platform, she gets stuck there forever. Also the longer this fight goes on, it seems to get a bit laggy, might be something with projectiles not being completely erased?

-at the barren lands 7E, one of the orbs shooting small orbs knocked me into a wall and then you get stuck. Might've been also hit by a monster at the same time.

-Gossimer Second screen, if u teleport at the broken bridge you get stuck between in the wall. Also there's no way back down from there, if you haven't flipped the switch yet.

-Gossimer: If you use breadcrumbs to leave a "team puzzle" room, you'll get stuck in team swapping mode, and can swap with random map events too

Thoughts/Issues/Suggestions:
-Using the Frog: There are tons of grass patches everywhere and not all of them contain items, so it's annoying to take out the frog every time just to try every little spot

-Wish running was auto once you get the boots. Normal speed is tedious and don't want the boots taking up my ability slot

-Toggling items is annoying. Go too fast and you'll go past the one you want and have to cycle again. Should use Zelda type submenu. Or display all items at the top so you can see what you're scrolling/selecting.

-Crafting materials are dropped randomly and if you miss crafting one armor, you can't craft the next level one. Also, you have to manually select each item to see if you can craft it. Shouldn't have used one item per receipebook for this crafting script.

-Skills needed to solve puzzles shouldn't cost so much MP, since you need to try them multiple times, and MP items can't even be bought as far as I can tell.

-Also, I opened your game in the editor out of curiosity. I saw that that each map contained multiple events to handle all the abilities. I felt kinda bad because now I know it would be a herculean task just to make any little change, since it would have to be manually copied to each map. If you ever make another game, you really need to find some scripts that can handle this kind of thing or at least make it possible to handle with common events.

Thanks for playing all the way through to the end and taking the time to write up such a thorough bug report. I love it! I'll fix all of them up as soon as possible.

Edit: Out of curiosity, can you check the timestamp on your copy of the game file and let me know when you downloaded it? Thank you.

Updated the download today, 11/4, with many of the bugs mentioned by Dyluck fixed.

@Dyluck - Much of the processing for player abilities is handled by a large number of common events, but you would still need to have most of the abilities have an image and a physical presence on the map, hence there being a set of events for them on every map. Building them originally was very difficult, but after that, every time I made a new map, I made it as a copy with all the ability events already on it. Most of them didn't need much changing from map to map, with the exception of puzzle rooms, where changes were needed based on the switches/levers present. You are right, in that going back near the end of the game to make any changes required changes to be made many times over, so I made sure to spend a great deal of time planning everything out before making any maps. I still had to go back and make some tedious changes near the end =).

Glad to hear you were able to fix things so quickly. Good job!
Glad to see that you have a new game.

Is it possible to go back to a completed dungeon?

I have beaten the boss of the Miradun Caverns.

Spoiler, Highlight to read.

I did not figure out how to get the reward in the fishing pond. In the room where you get the pickaxe D5 I could not figure out the strange rock next to the one you mine.

Also in F2 I did it in the dark and got the Lazarus Root and elixir of vitality. Was there more.

Enjoying the puzzles story.

Hi liza,
Thanks for playing Canvas! It is possible to go back to all dungeons, even after you've beaten them. There will be puzzles and secrets that you'll come across that you won't be able to solve/complete until you have new abilities or items, like the two you mentioned in Miradun Caverns. There is a complete item guide that came with the download. It breaks down the items by room, so you can check F2 in the Miradun Caverns to see if you missed anything. Hope this helps. Good luck and hope to hear back from you as you progress.
I am having a problem beating the Ooze Overlord in Grimwood. I can not figure out if I am harming him.

I'll put some help in a spoiler below

The only way to damage the boss is to use your new Fire ability on it. If you run out of Flux you can defeat the smaller slimes and pick up the flux refills that they drop.

Good luck and have fun! Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Can anyone tell me, how this mining minigame works ?

Hi RogerJr, thanks for playing Canvas. I can help you out with the mining. First, you place 3 nodes around the map. You will get a number after that telling you the combined number of spaces they are from the ore you're trying to get. If it says 8, that means that the 3 nodes are 8 spaces away combined (ex. one of them might be 2 spaces away, and two of them could be 3 spaces away. 2+3+3 = 8). Pick a space on the map you think it might be and count from the number of spaces it is from each node and add them together. If it matches the number, it might be right. You can then place a fourth node and it will tell you how many combined spaces the ore is from all 4. You can check spots by counting from the spot back to each node and adding all the spaces to see if it matches the number it gave you as feedback. I hope this helps.

Good luck and have fun!

Thanks that helped. Am back playing the game again and am really having a problem figuring out how to beat the bosses of this game.

Now in the Manor and

the purple squares seem to make me invisible but I can not see how that helps. My strategy is to dodge the fireballs then run up when squares are gray and fire/ hit the boss but most times he ends up hurting me also, made it to the red gauge once.
