Rebooting the game.

Inspiration comes from the weirdest places sometimes. I sent a text to one of my friends the other day, and when I typed in Soul Sunder, the autocorrect changed it to Soup Sender. I took a moment to stare at the words, mouth agape. Suddenly, it all became clear to me. Suddenly, I realized the error of my ways.

"Error of your ways? What are you talking about, Nova?"

Well, people have praised the story for this game in the past. I cannot understand why. I mean, people play video games to GET AWAY from issues like loss and grief, right? So why should I force others to confront these problems through the medium of game. Really, people. Video games cannot be considered a form of artistic expression. Haven't you read Ebert's blog post? Sheesh.

Soup Sender has been a revelation. I can't make games that touch on such heavy issues. I want to make something FUN! I want to make something CHEERFUL. I want to make something that people can laugh at!

So here's what's going to happen: Tomorrow, I'll be taking down all the downloads of Soul Sunder and I'll begin work on the rebooted version. Soup Sender's story will be drastically different from the mess that was the original game. Now, after Arya runs away from the village and becomes Zero, she instead decides to not pursue Cieran. Revenge is too heavy an issue that I want to tackle with this game, so it's scrapped.

Instead, she will search for a new passion in life: Cooking. That's right. Soup Sender will be a cooking simulator.

I've already made a quick concept mockup of the new look. Admittedly, not much has changed in terms of Zero's design, but I want you to at least take a look at what I have so far:

Look at how happy she is! Her sheer joyfulness perfectly reflects my own newfound attitude towards this game's new direction.

Artistic subs may notice that the line art looks a bit, well, different. You see, I have actually purchased a drawing tablet just so I can make better art for you! I've also graduated from GIMP and bought Paint Tool Sai. Gimp doesn't have a pressure sensitivity function, so I had to find something else that did. I'll admit that I'm not exactly perfect at it yet, but I promise you that I'm working hard to improve!

The fact that I've bought a tablet and a new art program should tell you how serious I am about this.

I'll leave the current downloads up for a few more days just so anyone who wants to see the old project can do so. I'm really excited about this new direction and I hope you all are too! I'll make more announcements on the project as I finalize the details, so stay tuned!

Awesome! I have been waiting for you to finally recognize your true potential as a game developer. Because really - themes, messages and complex subjects in games, who the heck needs that? I've been saying this for years already.
I can't wait to test the first demo! Good luck developing this amazing improved version.
I hope there's kale soup in the game it's my favorite. Mmmmmm digital soup, delicious.

OK maybe I will change my 4.5 star rating from my review to a 5 star. This is simply DELICIOUS. The only reason I refrained from giving this game a perfect rating was simply because there wasn't enough soup, or sending, but now that this has both, I think it will serve at least a 5 stars out of 5.

Hehe even so, I would love to see a cooking Sim made in RPG maker. But anyway, what was that about Paint Tool Sai? Was that real or fake, maybe I didn't get a reference? (Lol)

No, the tablet and Paint Tool Sai were actually true. Paint Tool Sai is an art program similar to GIMP (what I used before) but it's a lot more robust and easier to customize individual art tools, allowing you to make more detailed sketches. I'm sad that I can't use the Line Tool function to make more clean lines anymore, but with a tablet, I can do a lot more and better art than I did with a mouse. I just need to play around with the settings a bit more before I'm ready to do more proper art.

He he thought there was some element of truth to that. It seemed rather irrelevant to the joke you were creating and shoehorned in there, but that sketch looks cool. Here's to more proper art! ;)

Wait, what? No! I wanted my share of delicious soup! Red_Nova, you meanie!

I'm looking forward to seeing the artwork you are going to create for future projects. Good luck!
Dang I was hoping tablets worked with GIMP because I'd been planning on buying one. I'll have to look into that Paint Tool Sai thing.

nhubi's request was too unreasonable. It killed all my motivation for working on it. Blame nhubi.

Tablets definitely work with GIMP. The issue is that GIMP does not pick up pressure sensitivity. If you want to start with GIMP, you definitely should, tablet or no.

I made my own. If I can do that, you can do this. Take responsibility for your own actions Red...Also really? Cream of Chestnut soup is much easier than Kale soup (also tastier)

If you create Soup Sender, I can personally guarantee you that you will get nhubi's first 5 star review. I will make it happen. We'll start a Kickstarter.

Won't happen. I had pledged in the past that I would never make games again if I got a 5/5 on a nhubiview. Now, even true 5/5 games will get just a 4/5 just to prevent that from happening. Though, if a guy raised $55,000 making potato salad, I'm sure a cooking game can't fare much worse, right?

Also, nhubi, you've never seen me, and I use this word lightly, cook. The kitchen and I went through a bad breakup a few years back, and it's just been awkward ever since.

It could get a 4.5/5 (the future game, not Soup).

Well the only way to re-establish the relationship is slowly, start with boiling an egg and go from there.
Nhubi that brown goo can't possibly be tastier than Kale soup. Granted I haven't tried Chestnut soup but come on my soup has variety. It has linguica the best sausage on earth, it has kale, potatoes, and other awesome stuff depending on who's making it.

From this day you are now my soup rival!

Kale soup has kale in it, and only kale. What you are talking about is Caldo Verde. That's different.
Nhubi trust me in my neck of the woods this is what makes up Kale soup. Kale soup is very popular where I live. I know what I'm talking about. I may not make it but my mom makes it my neighbors make it every school in my area serves it and many resturants in my area serve it it's called Kale soup.

I looked up Caldo Verde on google trust me that's not what I'm talking about.

Well in my neck of the woods, kale soup has kale in it. Given your ingredients, Kale, potatoes and linguiça that's what is in Caldo Verde, add some onions and beans, and I ate a fair bit of it in Portugal. Irrespective, I still prefer Cream of Chestnut. :)

What's weird is that I couldn't get GiMP to recognize pressure sensitivity on my sister's Wacom tablet (I think it was an Intuos 3 or w/e) on Windows 7, but I could get it on my dinosaur 2005 Tablet PC after downloading an extra Wacom driver and have been using that for years now.
