The Castle of Baramuirge has appeared in the world once more...
The power of the ancient gods are sealed within...
Seek out this power before the demons can claim it...

A long time ago, back in 2002, I made a game that was never completed or released. Fast forward twelve years later, to the RMN event Revive the Dead. Chase For Divinity had been picked up, worked on, and dropped over and over again, but the time has come for it to finally be completed.

Join Vittoria, a mercenary who joins a cast of oddball characters on this zany-but-deadly adventure as they try to find the secrets of the ancient gods and the elusive castle where the demonic clash will begin.

The game offers:
  • A long, meaty, traditional-esce RPG experience

  • Eight different characters to meet and use in battle

  • Examine just about any object to get the characters commentary on it

  • A look at the earliest game I have ever released, with a lot of the rough spots still on display!

  • A lot of my really old art, only slightly polished from its original condition

Click here to see a big blog post about reviving the game and looking at it in hindsight :D

Notes: If you haven't played any RPG Maker 2000 or 2003 games before this, you'll need to install the fonts or the game will look wonky. If you have this problem, go to the Chase for Divinity folder, and inside find a folder called rm2k_fonts. Install the fonts onto your computer and it should fix the font issue.

Secondly, I find that the game (on my computer, at least) has a tendency to lag in the default full-screen mode, however windowed mode seems to work a lot better. To go to windowed mode, press ALT ENTER at any time.

Thanks everyone! ^_^

Okay, THIS should be the final version

Alright, last Saturday when I updated the upload and said it was the last update, I guess I was lying XD As I finished playing the game, I kept making a bunch of little changes, and now here we are, with one last version. And unless there's any major errors, I think this really will be it for this game!

Introducing Build v104

Changes:

-Slight Tweaks all over. Some enemies didn't give enough EXP, there were typos, a lot of little things.

-Added in five new Rhapsody Seashells, which will increase the odds that people will find enough to open all the doors in the Sealed Castle on Endtimes Island.

-You will now get a reward for getting to the final battle and losing in the Arena on Level 7 gauntlet. That way Level 7's not just a troll level XD;;;

-I tried to make the final dungeon a little more interesting. You can now examine all the objects, but instead of your characters reacting, a mysterious third party will make comments.

Whew! What started as me just replaying my oldest game turned into quite a bit of work, especially that final dungeon stuff. Ah well, I'm glad to have it finished. What a trip down memory lane XD

ok, well i just tried this game again after redownloading it and the direction key related controls are definitely not working at all.

even on the title screen and the part where it asks if you want to skip the intro. up/down don't scroll through the highlighted choices at all and that alone also leads me to believe any other movement in the game won't work either like before.

maybe something related to the movement controls got configured incorrectly by accident? i tried pretty much every key on the keyboard aside from the confirm/cancel related ones (Z/X/Enter/Spacebar/etc.) and not a single thing moves the highlighted option up or down so i'm thinking it's something in the settings or something. if not that then...SOMETHING is messed up somewhere since no other game seems to have this problem. :/ does this problem happen for anyone else?

I just downloaded it myself to see if there's an issue with the current build, but nope. Direction keys work just fine. I don't know what to tell you, but the issue isn't with the game.
I'm currently playing the game and enjoying it, especially the excellent dungeon design, but now I'm getting exasperated with the Arena Abomination during the seventh arena challenge. Since it's final dungeon time for my party, I thought I would be able to clear the arena by now. Is there any way to beat this nightmare? I've tried my luck with a level 40 Vittoria; she got all items that permanently raise status values and was equipped with: ExVoid Axe, Cluiria Shield, Psionic Armor, Psionic Helm and an accessory (I experimented with Beowulf Cape, Defensive Charm and Lich Amulet - the latter one is useless as the Arena Abomination's attacks don't seem to be darkness-based).

The first problem occurs when the Arena Abomination uses its "try to shred to pieces" skill. Due to the random factors of the battle system, this ability can cause up to 999 HP damage even when Vittoria's defense is (thanks to the Defensive Charm) 999. Unfortunately, the Arena Abomination's "soul stealing" skill is even worse: It always drains Vittoria of all of her (currently) 855 HP. If this skill always drains 100 % of Vittoria's maximum HP, this fight will truly be impossible to win.

What can I do to turn the tide in my favor? Did/do I miss some crucial equipment piece? Do I need to grind until I hit the level cap (50, I presume)? Is the reward for beating this challenge worth the effort at all? A little bit of developer's insight would be much appreciated. :)

This last challenge was meant to really be nigh-impossible. Most of the game (including the arena) was made when I was a teenager, and there was a friend of mine who playtested it and said the sixth challenge in the arena was too easy. So I put in a seventh that was nearly impossible to shut him up >.>;;; I *think* it's possible to win, but I honestly don't remember if I ever beat it as a kid?

Anyway, its totally not required to beating the rest of the game and the reward is several high tier MP-restoring items and an accessory that prevents all status ailments (which I think you can get some items that do that in the final dungeon anyway), so I don't think its worth all the hassle.

I apologize for being such a dumb kid and wasting your time. >.<;;;;; I'm not proud of that decision XD;
Thanks for your answer, and you don't need to apologize, since I didn't grind for this last arena challenge in particular. Even though I love optional challenges in JRPGs, I don't mind skipping them in case they don't provide a proper reward. Complete Psionic equipment sets and Almighty Ribbons for all characters as well as four treasure ticket equipment pieces should be enough to tackle the final dungeon.

I still suspect that the last arena challenge can't be won when the Arena Abomination uses the "soul stealing" skill (assuming that it always deals 100 % of the character's maximum HP as damage) - and he can't be beaten before he uses it. Thus, this challenge would really be impossible to complete. Players, though, can't say you didn't warn them. It's obviously called "impossible" for a reason. :D
That was one massive final dungeon, but now I've completed Chase for Divinity. Thank you for having developed such an entertaining game.

Here are some minor improvement suggestions in case you want to work on another version of Chase for Divinity sometime in the future:

A few spelling errors here and there; the duke in Mapledell calls Levron Zevron in the beginning; the weapons dealer in Misticonica claims to have imported weapons from "Daze" (instead of "Gaze").

The items "Life Shard" and "Bottle of Life" have the exact same effects.

After Vittoria and Sarah have made it out of the volcano: When they return to the castle now (of course there's no indication or incentive for doing this) and speak with King Aeon, the dialogue is still the same (with Levron's participation, even though he's not there at that time). Dialogue is only updated after Ed has joined the party.

When Ed joins the party, he's damaged when the player walks over the "swamp tiles" on the world map. By backtracking over the mountains to the place(s) where the party first entered the continent (castle, mountains, beach, tower, "hotel" lodge), I somehow managed to make Ed immune against this "tile damage".

In the tower where the last two relics (eyes) reside, on the map with the Power Orb treasure chest and the two arrow tiles: Shouldn't the stairs in the separated center area lead downstairs instead of upstairs?

I got into a random encounter on the sea fighting land enemies when sailing along the rocky shoreline north of Uppervale (southwest of the Mugen Desert continent). As I encountered similar bugs in other RPG Maker 2000 and 2003 games, this might be an engine-specific problem, though.

The Coffee Ring (treasure chest in the woods on the way to the mine) turns out to be a Coffee Bracelet.

Baramuirge Castle (first party's path): The computer that unlocks the level 3 locks says - when checked again - that the level 1 locks are unsealed.

Baramuirge Castle (second party's path): One treasure chest is already open (west of the treasure chest that contains a Secret Medicine; northwest of the treasure chest that contains the Erscilia Robe).

Thanks so much! :DDDDD

Those are a lot of bugs I missed! I really should fix those, tho I'm not sure when I'll get to it, as I'm pretty busy these days ^^;;; Thanks very much for pointing those bugs out, and I'm so glad you found the game entertaining!

OMG I can't believe it I've been trying to challenge the Arena's Abomination (Lavron with 925 def and 840 magic for the best def against physical and magical damage) just for nothing >_<

Very sorry ;_; -_-
LOL no worries, and one more thing it's kinda suck during the arena battle when your party members keep missing after the registration and you have to go back to the airship to get them. It would be nice if there's a party member switcher NPC in the arena.

Anyway I enjoyed this game a lot! Thanks for making Chase for Divinity :)
