Breath of Fresh Air: Announcing PotF Reboot with a MASSIVE Change!

I'm incredibly sorry I missed the blog last month! See, I was kinda nervous about how this announcement would go over with you all, so I wanted to take the time to make this introduction as best as I could. No point in wasting time over explanations, so let's get to the good stuff.

I'm happy to announce the new direction for Prayer of the Faithless: Now, the Revenant in our story is going to be Mia!

As I was writing the story of the original game, I couldn't help but wonder how the events of the prologue would play out if Mia stayed and fought the Hellspawn at the end of the prologue instead of running away with the rest of the villagers. Would she have been able to beat it like Aeyr could? What if Mia was the one who was given the offer to become a Revenant and save Honelleth? Once I started asking these questions, I couldn't get the possibilities out of my mind. Mia's timid and pacifist demeanor would make for a GREAT contrast with the savage nature of a Revenant, and would make for some EXCELLENT character development!

Not wanting to waste any time, I immediately deleted my current ACE project and started anew from the ground up. That's correct: the old game is gone. Just to make sure I don't chicken out and go back on my work, I went into my external hard drives and deleted all the game files from them as well. There's no going back now!

Thankfully, those who have already played the prologue will find that this is more than just a story rewrite! Mia brings her own unique twist to the Revenant's power of Soulfire Drain. Let's take a look at the climactic battle in Honelleth:

unity has been understanding and supportive of this move. She was even willing to redo Mia's battle background colors to be more thematically appropriate for a Revenant.

Gone is Mia's Bladelord skill set, but you'll be happy to know that the mechanics of stance switching has been integrated into her fighting style. Instead of Saboteur and Rush, however, she switches between Reaper and Devil stances, each with their own approach to handling Soulfire. Mia starts off every battle in Reaper Stance. From there, she can directly drain Soulfire using Soulfire Draw, set herself up to counter the next physical attack with a Soulfire drain using Primal Instinct, among other techniques.

Unlike Aeyr, Mia cannot form multiple weapons using drained Soulfire. Instead, when draining Soulfire, she will activate her own unique katana granted to her upon transformation: Akuma.

I'll detail the specifics of Akuma in a later blog, but for now, just know that it's a katana that increases with power the more you use Mia's Soulfire powers. Mia can no longer equip different katanas, so it's only appropriate that Akuma grows along with her. Draining Soulfire and activating Akuma will change Mia into Devil Stance, where she uses her newly awaken weapon to perform various high damaging techniques.

Anyway, you may have noticed the new ailment infliction to Soulfire Draw's description. This is another new addition that I'm incredibly proud of. Branding a foe reduces ALL of an opponent's elemental resistances, meaning that they'll take more damage from all sources. As Mia is not as independent as Aeyr, her powers needed to encourage players to work with the party more than they did before. After branding a foe, other allies can move in with their own elemental attacks to absolutely devastate foes.

But the fun doesn't stop there, dear reader! When you're ready to switch back to Reaper Stance, you can use various methods:

Final Howl, as the description states, is a move that severely damages all branded foes (you can brand more enemies by using Mia's Dark Brand Drive) as you sheathe Akuma.

I know what you're thinking: If Mia is the Revenant now, what about Aeyr? Oh don't worry, I have huge plans for him, too. Since Mia defeats the Hellspawn after becoming a Revenant, Aeyr remains as a Knight in Asala. I'll talk more about his situation in the next blog, so don't worry!

I know you're as excited about this new development as I am. I can't wait to hear your thoughts!

It's like a fanfiction come true! I know many games that have plot twists, but this may be one of the first games where the plot twist happens within the game's development itself. You never cease to amaze, Red_Nova!

Super excited to test this new version!

By the way, is the pun in the title intended?

Oh yeah, today's the 1st, isn't it? Well, I've been pretty bad about timing these blog posts, lately, so I wanted to get back on track with a regular upload schedule. And what better time to revitalize my commitment than when I revitalize the game? Haha!

It is if you want it to be!
This is actually legit? Because if it is, I can't wait to see the final outcome of the project :D :D :D

If simply a joke, nice one, Red! XD

But in serious manner, the art style, to me, seems slightly sharper and cleaner than before, so it seems like your art skills are improving, even though your art style was already great to begin with. :)

On a personal note, I was about to release something about Scarlet Twilight, but I'm postponing it until tomorrow because today is the day where anything could be a joke, like the Google Gnome prank.

Hope to see more updates on this soon! :D

Sorry, but it's just an April Fools goof. It's much better than my other idea of turning everyone into cats, though. The only legit thing in those screenshots is the battle layout redesign, which is still ongoing. But hey, if it helped sell the idea of this actually being real, then I say it's a success!

Thanks so much for the compliment on the art! I'm glad you like it!

Every now and then, I like to break away from the monotony of working on this one project to think about other tweaks or alternate ideas to help keep the creative juices flowing. This is just one of those ideas.

I wish I made mockups of gameplay for Soup Sender. That would have thrown everyone off even more than that one sketch did. I was still getting used to my tablet back then, haha.

Even though it wasn't that hard to guess that this was a joke, I was really impressed by how much work and effort you put into making this look convincing. So much creativity, even when it's just nonsense. This is the kind of April Fools' joke I can appreciate. Thanks, Red!

Glad you liked it! It was a lot of fun designing Mia's Revenant outfit.

Yeah, this was really cute. I like it when you do this!
Was the title before, "Breath of Fresh Aeyr"??

Nice Joke!

... Her face seems a bit long? And the portrait looks like her hair's blowing in the wind, unlike every other portrait, which looks at rest...

Then again, she is moving, in the art. ... The feet look weird tho? I guess she could be turning towards the screen? Although, her gaze is so far to the left, I'd think her legs are gonna tangle 'cause she's not looking where she's going...

Interesting idea though... New Game+ Joke Feature for a fun, OP Mia? Unlike Soup Sunder, you could integrate this into the final game.

Oh, this actually would have been a neat idea though. Maybe something to explore in a special edition.

The game isn't even out and there's already interest in a special edition? Haha!

While I'm happy at the positive reception, I'm starting to think that this went over a little too well. I thought the announcement might fool more people if I went in-depth about the details of the changes, and I kinda hoped my mention of scrapping the whole game for this would have annoyed at least SOME of you!

...Maybe I WILL do a cooking sim next year! :P

I'll be honest, it was perfectly clear to me that this was a joke right from the start. The timing just made it too obvious (and the design of Mia's eyes also kind of gave it away). To me, it didn't matter, though, because it was still really funny, and you did a great job pretending this was all 100% serious and legit.

However, if I had thought you actually were being serious about this change, you better believe I would have reacted differently. Especially to the part about deleting all previous versions. I would have had some words for you, don't worry.

(It would be funny to see how you'd handle a cooking sim, though. Strategically battle the ingredients before throwing them into the pan, all the while helping the cook face their dark and troubled past...)
