This was an entry for the Indie game Maker Contest 2015!
For more info visit: http://contest.gamedevfort.com/submission/126#.VcERcnkw-70
If you like it, please vote for it on IGMC's site!
The current download is the IGMC 2015 version. Some of the images (for example, the new logo) are from a newer version that is being worked on.

In 1609 G.D., the continent of Escalon was cast into turmoil when high king Alexis the Third was betrayed by his most trusted advisor Caelmor. Eventually Caelmor's reign of terror was put to an end by Olivia Corin and her fellow heroes.

The story of Escalia starts 21 years after Caelmor's defeat and follows Fayhe Corin, Olivia's magically gifted daughter, and her friends Lumia and Seyfer as they find themselves in a series of unfortunate events that could spiral out of control quickly and will decide the fate of the whole continent.

•No random encounters!
•Challenging enemies. Make sure to save often!
•Challenging battle mechanics: Guard has different effects for each character, and is only usable once per battle!
•Skill Synergies: Some skills will deal more damage or will be a guaranteed critical if a certain buff is applied!
•Equipment Skills: Some of the best skills are only learnable by wearing your character's specific necklace. Make sure to find them to have access to some of the best skills available.
•Fully parallaxed maps!
•Quests! Also, optional sidequests.
•Custom Sprites and portraits.
•Custom Menu and Battle Hud.
•An enthralling story, set in the same universe as my main game, Startide.

Uploaded some fixes

So I just launched a new upload of the 14th March version with some fixes.

- Bestiary no longer shows empty states
- Status cure items work
- Added some extra optional conversations in the cave
- Saving now works
- Slightly lowered the volume of some music.

Haven't thoroughly tested it, but it should be all good.

Well, on to working on the newer version now.

Sexy title screen!

pretty good intro. not to info heavy and a good cutscene

the menu is beautiful! nice to see a custom menu the same one gets dull really fast!

NOOOOOOOOOOOO we cant sleep on bed for full heal! :O

the side quest rescue dottie i think you receive crimson liquor instead of sappire liquor like it says

hmm the skill learning seems to be for show it always stays at 0/100
^not that it matters with game length and that you don't get other skills to learn which would not be needed if there were

the bestary is sadly pointless. you cant view it at 100% completion and the way the game is it has no purpose.
^better if the enemies did respawn (seems it was a glitch in the version i went thru)tho 3 enemies i could not find either way o.o

This was a nice and short experience with some pretty menus and character avatars.
i don't know what to say about the plot as i feel it actually starts when the game ends. also the beginning of the game was like never brought up again o.o
the battles were turn based but it was done in a manner which kept it from getting boring.

Overall
This is worth checking out! and maybe hope for a sequel or something? :3
i wish all games with these engines were this good or better

Thanks a lot for your review!

As for the intro:
The reason why Fayhe can use magic has to do with Caelmor's spell, but I made it somewhat implicit on purpose. I originally wanted to expand on that and end the game on a cliffhanger, but I was told that the game needed a proper ending. So I've saved it, for when I want to expand :)

There indeed seemed to be a problem with my events not respawning, which I'd need to fix eventually. I couldn't fix it on time. However, personally, (and speaking from my betatesters) we never really needed more enemies/higher lvls for the last boss, so I think it should work like this :p

And there better be an extension....
Just started and am already looking forward to an expansion of sequal :)

Well this is disheartening :(
Downloaded again...and no respawning for me :( I need more monsters :)

I sadly had to disable the respawning: it didn't properly work at first and when I tried to fix it, my slimes never even despawned to begin with, leaving them to chase you everywhere. But she is perfectly do-able with the level you have after defeating all the monsters, as long as you buy new gear and use mortal strike (which is found in a chest in the cave)

In a future patch I'm going to make mortal strike a baseline ability and I'll fix the respawn system, I just couldn't get it fixed on time.

Well, I just completed a three part Let's Play series for this game.
I must say this was a pretty good short game! The custom graphics in menus, maps and everything in general were really nice! :D

So, is there going to be a continuation of this? I ask this for the fact that the game prompted me to save my end game progress. :P

There's a very big chance that it'll get continued :)

I don't know if you've updated it since, but... meep!

The intro sequence was okay, for lack of a better word to describe my feelings on it. It wasn't bad, but it didn't really wrap me into the game. It also introduced a lot of characters that seem like they'll only be pertinent later on, but maybe you could have paced it better? I also don't really grasp the conflict going on in this story since that chancellor guy and his NPC-looking cronies got killed and the world was saved...?

It doesn't help that you add an immediate dissolve into the house with your main characters with little to no context in between.

Getting past the terrifying facial expressions (everyone has huge smiles, do they?), I fiddled around in town for a bit before figuring out where I need to go to get to the forest. I encounter my first battle against slimes and it was this point where I started groaning. Those things have way too much HP and all of my characters feel pathetically ill-equipped to handle them, in terms of how it feels to play them.

Your first battle is one of the most important parts to an RPG. It gives the player a sense of the tone of the entire game, and they should allow the player some relative safety to learn basic battle tactics without being punished too harshly for it. You should also think of these battles as mini-puzzles: obstacles with preset enemy tactics for the player to figure out. There is a reason why the slimes from Dragon Quest died in only about 2-3 hits in low levels, because with an introductory enemy that does nothing but land basic attacks you, the player already gets the point of the fight. Dragging it on further doesn't make it challenging, it makes it wear out its welcome and become boring real fast.

Anyway, I got into an encounter with a flower and a slime troop and died, then I realized I didn't save unto that point and quit. I MIGHT be willing to give this game another chance, but right now I'm having mixed thoughts about it.
