The Helkar came from the stars and groomed humanity to become the forefront of life forms on our planet. They shared with us their knowledge, gifted us with magic and helped our small civilisations grow and expand into eras of great peace and prosperity.
Then, they left. Continued with their star-bound journey and never returned. Over time petty jealousies and hate grew among our kind. Skirmishes and wars broke out over the bastions that they left for us, and we broke the world.
Time passed. Their knowledge and power was lost, but for the few teachings we could scrape together over countless years and searching. The old cities were combed over and civilisation grew once more. Peace reigned, though it was a fragile peace.
Magic was forgotten.
...until the first of the Helkar ruins were found. A small country uncovered them, and with that discovery, chose to encroach on their neighbours. Together countries beat them down, despite the re-emergence of magic and powers lost to time being in their hands.
The Pact came from that, a promise and contract that any and all Helkar ruins found from then on would belong to the world and not one country alone. That standing military was not allowed to search them, but that paid adventurers from each would represent their land in the uncovering of the magics within.
And peace reigned once more. Skirmishes and border disputes were plenty but time passed in relative peace, more knowledge being found and shared as new ruins came back to light.
It has been almost 70 years since the last Helkar ruin was discovered, when a small team of militia find a cave...
The Pact is still in effect.
The Contract remains unbroken.
