I'm so sick of book adaptations that suck. How hard could it possibly be to stay true to your source material?!

Good examples of staying true is The Lord of the Rings books, Harry Potter, the second Hunger Games, To Kill a Mocking Bird, The Shining, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

As those examples have shown, it's not that hard to follow a book, and expand upon it. Some of the best movies can come from books!
Bad examples is the Percy Jackson franchise, the Spiderwick Chronicles, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Eragon. (And that's just with kids books.)

I mean, I'm not saying changing plot points to speed up the story is a bad thing. Quite the contrary. Look at The Wizard of Oz. It cuts out a ton of stuff, but it still retains the charm of the original book.

No, I'm talking about changing things for no good reason. As in removing characters, plot points, important information, and even completely rewriting characters for no real reason. Why bother doing that? It doesn't help the movie in any way, shape or form.

I mean if you can't bother to follow the book's basic plot accurately, then why the heck are you even bothering to make a movie out of it?

Something that was bothering me for a while. What do you guys think?

World War Z should have been called "Brad Pitt VS. Zombies." With that title I'd still think it would be a box office hit.
World War Z was the worst "book to film" adaptation I've ever seen. The movie was slightly enjoyable and wasn't a complete waste of time to watch, but it had NOTHING to do with the awesome book it was "based" on. How we went from shambling undead to chattering, clucking, fast moving zombies that infect and turn people within seconds is beyond me.

Stephen King's books also get it pretty bad when they move to the big screen. A lot of film adaptations of his books end up with COMPLETELY different endings from the books. I'm looking at you, Dreamcatcher.
It's very hard, because the mediums are very different! But sometimes the adaptation is better than the original book. Like the Bourne movies - they are way more entertaining than the books. I also liked the Watchmen movie more than the graphic novel :X (the ending made way more sense in the movie, and that pirate comic book subplot was dumb). Also in the Berserk anime they got rid of that annoying fairy person that was in the manga.
