I've realized my characters are starting to become more complex.

Like for example the main character being an optimistic teenage boy. That's all they have. So they'd be a simple character with no other notable personality traits.

A more complex character would change their emotions and things like that based on what goes on around them. They would naturally change based on previous experiences. Character development, as it were.

You're magical to me.

Good job! Now you just have to get to the point where your characters tell you what they'd do in any situation.
"Hey Phil, I would grab that pizza. Hey, write me to grab that pizza. Hellooooooo?"

my name is not phil
Will your next game be about the epic quest to get the Deep Dish of Cheekago? Like Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle, but with more RTP!
The way I began to achieve more complex characters was to constantly imagine "nothing" conversations, and important scenes between them in different ways. I gave them voices and inflections in my head. Basically, I started treating them more like actual people and less like storytelling tools.

Characters are fun.
I have fun making complex characters by putting them in emotional situations and imagining what they'd do. Like, happiest and saddest moments in their lives. Walking them through their normal everyday lives can be just as revealing too.

Getting into an entirely different mindset is the funnest part for me.
