Well, GIMP is a great open source graphical editor. Takes a bit to learn, but it has just about as many features as photoshop, and you don't need those for pixel art anyway. I use Audacity for music, though I only edit. You can create using it though.

VX trouble

When I set up my new machine, which is running Vista, I could not connect to nTitles until completely disabling UAC, even running as an admin. The problem is that sometimes certain actions that programs make do not trigger that "Allow this program to..." dialog, so they just fail. I could not even install Acronis until I got rid of UAC. Vista is great without it.

The core issue here is that you are using images which contain more than 255 colors. These images look cool, but rm can't handle them. When you decrease the color depth, many of the original colors are lost. Programs like Irfanview will usually do a good job of creating the palette when you index, but 255 is still going to be your limit.

Ugh...everyone asks this question. You need to be connected to the internet so that you can obtain the serial number from their server. If you are connected, try turning off your firewall. If you are using Vista, disable UAC.

Personally, I would go with XP over VX, but they're right; spending a large amount of time to recreate the DBS just to add a few small mods seems pointless. If you like customization, go with XP or VX, though I do really enjoy 2k3.

Not as easy as you make it sound. To make it look even remotely like a 'real' floating island, you need many tiles of different lengths and degrees of shading for the bottom. Tricky to find.

Yeah, the difficult part is going to be making it so that there is no transition between battles. Everything else is simple. If the eventing lost you, I would wait until you have a little more experience or use that game as a template.
