The thought I was originally trying to get across here was that people should be careful not to narrow their audience too much. Fangames are at the biggest risk of this, since people can fall into the trap of focusing too much on making a perfect game for a very small target audience.
You have to watch your information flow. Don't just assume the player knows something but other the hand babying them too much with really basic tutorials is also not desired. It's a balancing act and although you'll never get it just right, put some thought into it.
