I hope I'm not being too harsh, but all 4 of those look kinda gross tbh. Maybe they look better in-game, but the tint just comes off looking artificial and tacky. (If I had to choose one, I'd agree the first is the least extreme...)
With the example you're aspiring for, the green and blue tones still retain some of their saturation, so it looks more natural. You're better off messing around with the vibrancy/saturation setting for your chip-set, or color-grading the tiles with a filter.

Having seen literally any of Blindmind's maps in the past I think the one thing you don't have to worry about is tiles repeating too much. It looks like the upper layer just exploded most of the time. I think this was a colour/style test, mostly.
Lol yeah, it was just a color/palette test for the trees. The map isn't even really completed... xD I guess I should have mentioned that.
I've been giving some thought to replacing a good deal of the Rudra objects with custom-made tiles, kind of like what Luchino did for Tristan. But so far it's been tricky to get the visual style to stay consistent with what's already been established. Do you think the shading for those trees seems off from the other BR screens?

FF7 remake. It's a thing.
Sadly though, I'm pretty sure Square-Enix mostly sees ATB battles and such as a relic of the past, as grossly misinformed as that may be.
Nomura has basically already confirmed as much:
(As an aside, how this this one man come to be the director of THREE OF SQUARE'S BIGGEST TITLES all at once?!?)
It's very likely they're borrowing assets and elements of the game engine from FFXV. Otherwise it would take them 4-5 years at minimum to develop the remake. At least with going that route, they'd have a pretty sizable launching point.
A (less) polarizing option would be to include a "classic" ATB style battle system that's more of a straightup throwback to the original, as an alternative to whatever changes SE is bound to implement. They certainly have the budget for it... ;__; But I won't hold my breath.
...But yeah Mog's also right - we know so little at this point, there's no sense in ruffling feathers.

...we can't have these upgraded, beautiful 3D models of Cloud and Barrett, still lining up in a row, jumping forward to attack an enemy, then jumping back to wait for their next turn. That would be bizarre.

It's funny, the further you divest from the "RPG-maker" look, the more intriguing games become.
Lol, that's subjective tbh. Plenty of 'traditional' games look great, and I can think of a few hideous experiments...
On the other hand, this shot actually has a nice atmosphere, but the cat portrait makes it more comical than anything. Lmao I think that's what you were going for though?

I'll just say this. If the game doesn't please you, or you think that the game doesn't feel right because one little thing changed, there's always the original you can play. Things will change, that's a fact. I myself honestly welcome any changes, as long as it's not too crazy or dumb. The game needs it badly in a lot of areas, let them do what they need to do I say (again, as long as they don't do anything too dumb)!
That's just my two cents on this and the internet people constantly worrying about (and/or bitching about) things changing like they tend to do with remakes and the like. ^^;
Agreed.
Luckily the remake is pretty much GUARANTEED to be musically and visually superior to the original, so that's not much of a risk.
When you apply that logic to the story... things get more sticky and arbitrary. I can very easily see the director imposing changes to increase continuity with the sequels... but that runs the risk of distracting from the original narrative, which was great in its own right. I honestly hope they mostly leave the script alone, and don't let the characters veer off track with Nomura's pseudo-philosophical bullshit.
(With that being said, he's already confirmed the cross-dressing scene, so I have some hope. xD)

When asked if the remake, in development for PlayStation 4, will follow the Final Fantasy VII narrative exactly or feature new elements, director Tetsuya Nomura gave GameSpot an ambiguous answer.
Tetsuya: "We’ve announced an HD port version on the PlayStation 4, and then we have the remake coming to PS4,” Nomura said through a translator. “You’ll have this extremely, very, very pretty FFVII existing on the same plane. We feel that if that happens, it’s like, why have the same exact game?
Lol wow, this actually annoyed me a little... Do people really even care about the remaster? I probably stand in the minority as someone who actually enjoys (and has defended) Nomura's artistic vision, but this logic is a slap in the face. Idk maybe I'm jumping the gun, but you'd think the man would have more respect for the game that launched him into a high-profile figure. I really hope he was just being coy here.
I wish Kitase and Sakaguchi could have a more significant role with the structuring and quality-control, and let Nomura handle the aesthetic stuff. Tbh he's often better at generating concepts than effectively executing them in the director role. The development time of KH3 and FFXV speaks for itself... eugh.
If the remake is closer to the spirit of the "FF7 compilation" sequels than the original, a lot of people are going to be disappointed. If they really must shake up the mechanics and battle system, at least include a classic ATB option that's as close to the original as they can get away with. They certainly have the budget for it, and it'd be way less polarizing.

If you liked the recent FF games, you will like this remake.
If you liked the original FF7 but don't like recent SE games, you're going to hate this remake.
Like Feld said, I think SE are pretty aware that the response to their work in the past decade has pretty lukewarm. It would be a true shot in the face to their fans to radically change the essence of the FFVII to be more in line with the spinoffs, so hopefully that ISN'T the case. ;__;
Considering all that's riding on this game financially, I don't really see that happening.

Final Fantasy VII is an important game for me, but this seems more like a reboot, I'd prefer a remaster with improved overworld 3d models and balanced battles.
Agreed. As long as they keep the original script (and don't torture us with cringe-worthy voice-acting), I think the storytelling could benefit immensely from the remake. I guess it remains to be seen what direction they'll take the gameplay... but hopefully it's little more than just a subtle tweaking.

The ten-year-old in me literally cried watching this. xD I don't think I've ever been so happy over an E3 announcement.
I am hoping they ditch the Advent Children voice cast tbh though.
author=LockeZI mean, do people really want to replay the same carbon-copy game with enhanced visuals and voice-acting? They can do so much more cinematically with this game's incredible story, and if they can keep the spirit of the original, they definitely should! Hopefully Nomura keeps the hack-and-romp combat FAR away from this one.
I mean, it's not going to be the same game. It's not even going to be a similar game. It's going to be a completely different, infinitely worse game with sort of the same story.
I am hoping they ditch the Advent Children voice cast tbh though.

I appreciate that this project seems to integrate textures in order to overcome the scarcity of original resources for VXA! It's a nice effect!
However, the resolution/sharpness etc.. seems to be inconsistent with many of the objects. Those boxes just look like they were (badly) Photoshopped in. And the charsets don't really mesh with the more realistic shading in the maps.
