No one's really answered this yet: What exactly is an oversexualized male image anyhow? Is Kratos not an example of this?

I'd say, no to Kratos being oversexualized, because he's a character who wasn't imagined in terms of sex appeal. He is, however, highly "masculinized" because he is a muscular, terse, aggressive figure. He's not imagined as a prospective sexual partner for the female audience.

Compare with someone like the character of Dar from the Beastmaster TV series, whose bare skin, and moreso his compassionate character, are meant to draw the attention of the female viewers of the day and to hold him as an object of sexual interest. Compared in context to sexually agressive or the unembellished figures of other male characters in the series, I would definetly call that character "sexualized".

I think what you're looking to do is talk about how the images are "gendered" rather than how they are "sexualized". The difference is between talking about an image is made "sexy" and how it is made to conform to contemporary aspects of gender, masculinity or femininity.

For example, through the visage of the (most likely male) game designer, the barrel-chested space marine is an embodiment of modern ideals of masculinity and the walking cleavage scantly characterized ladything is an embodiment of ideals of modern femininity. And while the female character may be highly sexualized, that is in conformity with the designer's ideas of what constitutes an idealized female image.

Slight Derail:

so i was just going to make some asinine comments about "oh um perhaps it would help a little if there were more female game producers who can do what they like, look at Phantasy Star, that was a cool game produced by a woman with a normal female lead character" and "oh look Bulletstorm was produced by a female, isnt that cool" but then i read the top comments on a video of an interview with that producer, Tanya Jessen and it kind of put me in a bad mood

How did Tanya Jessen get her job? I don't mean to insinuate she doesn't deserve it, I just mean, how did she get it? Like, I'm not being misogynistic, this is more about her age than her gender. She's like, in her early 30s at most, since she graduated college in 2002 with a BA in freaking political science (which according to my friend with a degree in political science is exactly as useless as a degree in creative writing) and six years later she's producing GoW 2?

Am I the only person who thinks that's nuts!

Producers are hired usually for their team management experience, rather than their programming or art/compsci saavy. In a studio system they end up being people managers in the production process, more than anything else. So a PolySci degree might not be a bad asset to have, in that case.

Make your peace with reality, my friends.

It's certainly not going anywhere.

Perhaps that kind of gender-bashing behaviour could be the result of unsupervised 10-17 year old boys who are playing videogames and because their parents take no active interest in their well-being, have isolated them from positive socialization with females. Would be concordant with the double-income and absent-parented standard of modern Western society, indubitably.
