Let's Examine: A Look at What Makes Games Great (or Not)

Nice XD

Actually, it is one of my top 3 games because it does many things right and about all of them possible with RM.

Like another interesting point: How the game handles robot characters differently while not making them such or overpowered.

Vehicle combat and overall setting.

And yeah, remember Karsunan being a PSIV fan which reminds me that since I am back I should go pester you guys on irc sometime :)

Pacing VS Character Development

Regarding villains, a key thing is to not develope them more than the heroes, and specially, don´t make them look good or their actions being justified to the player. Why? Simple: It is a game and unless you make players turn coat, they are stuck with the heroes fighting AGAINST the villain, and it is quite frustrating fighting a villain when you actually think he is right and you are wrong.

This really got me down with Tales of Phantasia. Dhaos is a great character and would make a great anti hero, but is a really lame villain.

Let's Examine: A Look at What Makes Games Great (or Not)

I was exactly going to post what YDS and specifically geodude said.

Either way, a fun and short one could be: How Phantasy Star IV made a success ful player character death scene which is both coherent to plot and gameplay and still dramatic. I think this would serve to many people because player character deaths are something very easy to go wrong and frustrate the player.

Pacing VS Character Development

Welll... I don´t mind character "development" too much, but I do like character exposure and interaction.

The diference? Development means that your character is growing and learning, wjch is good, but without enough exposuire it is hard to know who the character is before and after the plot events.

By exposure I mean situations relating to a character overall personality. By interaction I mean characters interacting between themselves or with NPCs.

My issue with development is that most of the time in JRPGs or RM games it follows anime concept: youth, learning and changing are the key values, so lets stiock those underage young heroes who have a lot to grow, learn and changes and make it so in six months of adventure they become invicible heroes....

Seriously, I can´t relate to that, I want more older characters, more serious and experiencied ppl. Think Solid Snake here or Opera Vectra from Star Ocean 2 or Arngrin from Valkyrie profile. All of them still learn things, still get minor changes, but they don´t need tons of development to become "adults" ahead of time.

As for pacing and dialogs: you can have all dialogue you want as long as it is interactive and interesting, so you can have the player move the hero and talk to other characters or just move ahead if they don´t chare for extra chat (thats what I do).

Game Drive Week 04

post=Lennon
I can't reveal any of the actual antagonists, since they would all be giant spoilers. However, I can reveal some other stuff.

During the game, a lot of conflicts will be centered around the organization Dead Hand. It is a largely mysterious terrorist group, who seem to have something against the larger countries of the world. They make their first attack in three years at the start of the game, targeting two reactors, one in Garocha and one in Areccia.

More or less similar situation, and worse, in my actual project the organization is not uncovered, what you have is a mysterious woman with dark green hair coordinating a large terrorist attack on the moon base the game is set on.

There are however two key bad ppl she manipulates once she and her soldiers manage to overtake the base:

Victor Marif - The base commander who was actually quite annoyed to be posted on command of sucj a remote base and is convinced by the mysterious woman that if he don´t resist her and cooperate offering his base, resources and troops he will have the knoledge and power to stray safely from theroyal control and have a nice life once the terrorists break the whole governing system.

Ladea Barlaon - The research partner of the protagonist who always envied her for her outstanding abilities. Ladea has always been rather popular but her family raised her with a mindset of being number one on what she does, anything below that is failure. She tagged along Elizabeth to observe her and try to surpass her, but kept "failing" and in her last failure, during the terrorist attack, was captured along with her test prototype mech, however instead of being imprisoned, she was convinced by our mysterious villain lady to fight her former companions and finally upstage Elizabeth. While not ruthless, she feels that is the best way to succeed in life and bring honor to her family.

Whatchu Workin' On? Tell us!

You can always notify Yanfly of this issue so hopefully it is fixed in a new update :)

Anyway, working the first actual MAP of my current project, dum dum dum o.o

Game Drive Week 03

Sam: I understand that we can only see the roof of the vertical train, however the horizontal one, according to the tileset angle, should have the side appearing.

Suzu: Makes less random battles but make those kinda like mini bosses. More fun for you and for the player :)

Are you happy with how your life has turned out?

Wow Suzu if not for wife having similar problem to yours I wouldn´t understand the extent of what you mean, I am just now understanding her a bit more since I was raised to make all decisions on a rational basis and only deal with reason, this created many conflicts since wife explodes heavily, but as I understand things get better and she makes an effort to deal with this.
Also think your kids will help you a lot as you said yourself and don´t concern so much with not giving enough attention - I believe all moms feel that way no matter how much attention they give to their kids.
And I bet Asa is a great husband and daddy and seems far stronger than me in that regard (though I am doing my level up or trying to).
So yeah think that the good things you have, by what you said, make yp for the things that bother you somehow :)

Recruiting help on your project

post=heisenman
post=Cardboard_Master
Has anyone here ever successfully recruited game making help from other people they didn't already know?
Only people whose project was already good/popular before they started recruiting.
Valkyrie Stories is a perfect example.

Not really, I posted asking for help (I offered spriting in exchange though, but still no known project) and GRS offered to work on my custom visuals for battle in rm VX. Aside my offer I think the point was having a detailed description of what I needed with mock ups, examples and all graphic assets needed to him to work right on the help topic.

Also seem many ppl getting help in the help section for doing decent posts :)

Aj O actually agree with you Wolf, however it was not my character design, the guy who asked for the test sent me artwork and all I did was try to follow it as close as possible. But thanks for the compliment part :)

Khos: hehe those were the last bits done so I was in a hurry and probably skimped it on those, I didn´t want to be to slow either bewcause when you work, specially for I phone, production rate is really key, but guy contracted me anyway so guess thats fine, but I may go back and edit this one :D (*or not since it has no ties with my own projects but I will still take the criticism to reference future worlk :P)

Thanks XD
