Discuss: Elements

ARIA uses

Crystal
Angel
Force
Magma
Void (Karsu loves this element)

There are no WHEELS or anything. However, since there are no elemental spells or whatever (you collect rocks that you can throw and add your Talent stat to) elements are supposed to be the object of much veneration! You'll want to study surroundings and talk to dungeon deziens to learn about a boss weakness. They are arbitrary-- but there are some similarities like MINIBOSS WOLFPUP and BOSS WEREWOLF are both weak to Force.

ARCANE MIST uses

Melee
Ranged
Blood
Magic

Melee is hand-to-hand weapons, Ranged is really like ANTI-FLYING stuff, Blood is for the Bloodmage, Necromancer and Guild Leader characters (blood is, like, the theme for AM), Magic is... magic.

I used a similar system for Versus Xerza, but took out Blood and replaced it with Healing.

I HATE YOU

So, you're working on your dialogue. There's this dude in the party, and he's important story-wise. Without him a bunch of characters wouldn't be as developed as they should be. You also really, really hate him. His costume sucks, he talks funny, he's kind of annoying-- but if you take him out/edit his personality, it just wouldn't work in the scheme of things.

How do you deal with such a character, and have you ever had characters like this?

In my own experiences, I've had two characters like this. One is in Arcane Mist, which has like 25 PCs so obviously I'm not going to like everybody. The thing is, I've developed them all so much that if I took out one part of the story the entire thing would collapse. Jesse connects the characters Yrisa and Gambit together, as well as providing a means for the character Arcturus to reach a certain dungeon to meet up with Valentine and her cohorts (whom Jesse never actually meets!). He is also ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL to the backstory of the game, as well as an incredible amount of Gambit and Yrisa's development.

You don't know who these people are, but I'm sure you understand his importance somewhat.

Thing is, he's so boring. He's silent and secretive and a sissy. Jesse actually dresses up as other people at certain points of the game to deal with other characters and going by false identities. He's also supposedly dead but that just makes him have to be so low-profile (it's this big military secret). I hate him.

But again, without him or with a personality change, it just wouldn't work!

Another example is the dwarf Alkar in ARIA, a project I'm making with Karsuman. Alkar's funny I guess, and he's high-ranking enough to be important. He's even a temp PC at several points in the game... I still hate him. This is partly because balancing his stats for the first dungeon was a PAIN IN THE BUTT; however, he's also just... I dunno. All of the mercenaries he controls are constantly waiting on him hand and foot. When he joins the party, there's this line of mercs standing there and being like ALL LOVE ALKAR <# <# <# (he does not deserve "3s"). When Karsuman and I were discussing who we should add as the late-game sixth permanent party member, it went like this:

<Craze> I'm working on the personal skill stuff now. We have methods for Elliot, Rigel and Fahrem's orbs, but what about Nadia, Aria and the sixth character (who is that btw ;_;)?
<Karsuman> We don't have a sixth character yet.
<Karsuman> How about Alkar?
<Craze> NO LSNVUSBVONLNAFNDSNVOSDJVNSDORGHUOASHNSNDVODUSNVSNDVIUSHG
<Karsuman> Why, he's amusing.
<Craze> SNVSUVHNUIVOUSDHJLSDhVDISH O HATE HATE HATE

We've figured all that stuff out now, but yeah.

DISCUSS (question repeated):

What does your avatar mean?

My avatar is the 2k3 version of a dude in my ephemeral project, Arcane Mist. I actually don't really like the character, but he's cute!

I actually really like the FF6/REFMAP combo! Neat choice.

RMN Map-Design Contest [Winners announced]

HI

That chipset (or most of it) is what made me the mapper for the now-defunct NotSuikoden.

Also, if I win any prize then the money can go to the next person.

...wasn't there a sexy kindacatdude in there before? Ah well, I can deal with blonde guys I suppose.

Also any of your screens look pretty neat-o, Cray!

It's A Baby Dragon!

As far as I know, not many RPGs deal with pregnancy. This might be due to the ages of the characters involved, but plenty of games have young and viable female characters. What with various love affairs and the occassional implied sex scene, why don't we see more pregnancy? There are epics that span years, after all-- it only takes nine months to push out a little bundle of love.

FF6 had something like this and it was a pretty neat sub-plot to develop Terra and Mobliz (I think; WIP help me here!). A few games have PREGNANT WOMAN BEGETS CHILD in the prologue (DQ games, Rudras). What with all of the biblical games out there, I'm sure plenty deal with CAN YOU PUSH OUT THE BABY JESUS BEFORE THE KINGS GET THERE?!?!?!?!?!!!?!?!?

So yeah. Pregnancy in RPG's/FPS's go
