Ashes of Roses
kumada i am going to give you points for (big spoilers i guess?):
...figuring out the final line of the game.

and yeah i didn't get to all of the nihil parody because that the truly insensible stuff starts after the holofernes fight. ;V time constraints! that said, "the tragedy of heath" is meant in a very Shakespearean way. he's not OMG I'M AN ORPHAN, but he has a fatal flaw (trust, in so many ways) that undoes him.
that said, the biggest issue is definitely that it's a truncated bit of game. each act has a specific tone of narration that being eased in and out of will help a lot, as will a more natural pacing of story beats. i basically did the first boss and final boss of each act for gameplay variety. ultimately, it's for the judges'/degica's sake. *shrug* contests!

hid the whole convo since it was a LOT of text on the page and kinda spoilery. feel free to peruse it if curious (preferably after having played the game yourself)
Ashes of Roses
kumada: well, i'm glad you're excited for the full version!
gameplay response:
yeah, coulda used a description somewhere for Jam. it negates your BPF Recharge.
i deigned not to use hp bars consciously. there's a few more fights like holofernes in the full game that are endurance checks, not boss-murdering. a half-measure i might include is an icon or other indication on an enemy that they're below half HP or so. it won't be anything you can enter battle seeing.
yeah, Argent dying is bad. if you want to be faster, you can always use the smoke grenade to retry.
the spells probably feel weird because they directly say "for defeating x...", yeah. they'll be reworded and moved around in the final game. if the first game's progression was mega man, this game's progression plan is super mario 64. defeating 'worlds' will get you spells.
cleansing aura states very clearly that it removes attack/defense/speed break.
as for the narrative criticisms...
but yeah. it's not a romance and it's not about the setting. it's the tragedy of heath. again, glad you liked the game overall. sorry if i sound like a snotty Art Game Dude.

i'm gonna have to straight-up disagree and say you just didn't get it, or have a narrow view of how a game should draw you in. i'll admit the last map is a bit rushed, but like the dev room explains, that's because the game is a "diagonal slice" to fit the hour.
i don't really want to just sit here and trash your interpretation, because maybe i just didn't do a good job. ultimately, i think you're looking too hard at what isn't important that has simple answers ("who are the roses?" exorcists. "where are they?" ruined earth. "why is this happening?" because it is.), and are ignoring or not grasping at what is important. for example, it's.... not in media res. it's a linear narrative that starts with the action (but not crucial action, it's just action), meant to be a dark parody of pretentious nihilism...
...which is what i think is most amusing at how much you're trying to investigate the world and find meaning it it, etc. to that end, maybe it worked after all. i'm not an expert writer, just some dude on rpg maker dot net.
my alternative idea for the intro was to adapt Henry V's "O, for a Muse of fire" prologue... maybe that'd help lol
oh adn the game over screen was just lategame art i had. interpret that as you will ;V.

zacheatscrackers
NieR: Automata. Fucking amazing game, that is all <333
yuuuup.
Marrend: mine wound up being about the same length because I finished up a bunch of sidequests for the B route, but in general yeah it's shorter.
i am playing RESONANCE OF FATE and Cities: Skylines, which are both about building roads. RoF has a lot more guns in it, though.
