Pokemon Go Journal

I went to my favorite seafood restaurant today and I caught a Krabby in the parking lot.

I am going out of town for the weekend so I hope to find some decent mons, since they seem to be all but extinct around here!

Oh, haha, y'all are still talking about the A/B thing when I already committed to B a few days ago!

The camera automatically zooms in slightly for cutscenes and when interacting with/speaking to characters to make it more intimate, so, that's all good.

Since Unity is a totally 3D engine, getting sprites to look "right" is a monumental task in and of itself. For instance, all the sprites in the game are actually imported at 400% resolution, then scaled down to 25% with a bilinear filter, so it "looks" pixel-perfect. Trying to bring in sprites 1:1 makes for a jittery, broken mess - believe me, I tried! So, there's not an easy way to make the pixels a consistent size, but this method gets things close enough, and lets me do camera zoom tricks close to losslessly.

Anyway, enough words! Thanks again for the responses!

Haha, well, I did rent it. If I'd paid money for it, I'd probably stick with it and see if it grew on me more.

VLR was my favorite game of 2012 so I am psyched for the finale. I went ahead and bought it digitally because Amazon delayed my pre-order indefinitely. Stupid watch.

TMS trip report: It's, uh, all right. I was pleased that they totally stuck to the idea of the "SMT and Fire Emblem" crossover, especially in a mechanical sense, but I am already finding the battle system to be tedious and I'm only a few hours in. It keeps the idea of the "press turn" system, but it only applies to automatic followup attacks from your other party members, so it's even more whack-a-mole than Persona. The story and characters are complete anime fluff, which is to be expected, and thankfully every cringeworthy animated cutscene is totally skippable. If you have a high tolerance for that stuff, it might be worth a go.

Also, I just remembered that Zero Escape 3 released today, so I'm gonna go play that instead!

Just got approved as a Playstation Partner developer! Now I can publish to the Vita and make the big bucks!

Haha, thanks! The Vita thing was a half joke; I'll push to the regular consoles too. The Vita will be nice as a portable demo unit, though.

I know right, unfortunately my present touchscreen capabilities will be limited to "replacements for the missing L2 and R2 buttons."

Going to start up Tokyo Mirage Sessions, aka "SMT x FE" today. I've heard surprisingly good things!

After that, I'll probably rent the new Star Ocean to see how abysmal it is. Then, I should be JRPG'd out until Persona 5 comes along.

Thanks for the response, y'all! It is starting to look quite a bit sharper, I'll admit. I do have to go through all the scenes and make sure the backgrounds are all properly cropped and such, and relocate some "hidden" treasures that are meant to be off-screen and naturally out-of-view (until you use the right analog stick to push the camera around and see them). All that will probably take me a couple more days to finish.

In celebration, here's one last gigantor screenshot!

What's your favorite Video Game song(s)?

Hey y'all. I've been messing with camera projection settings and am wondering if a zoomed-out look would work in my favor. The consensus I've gotten so far (and the first thing that I noticed too) is that the zoomed-out camera makes for less blocky sprites, but it also makes things feel less intimate.

As this is a platformer, it also reveals more of the level at once, which could be good or bad (seeing more of the level, but revealing traps and hidden surprises/enemies). Performance does not seem impacted, but I haven't tested the change on my "beater" laptop yet.

Here's the "regular" zoom level:

And here it is zoomed out about 25%, which is as far as I could go before I started getting weird interpolation errors on the sprites. I also adjusted the projection on the foreground elements slightly:

Anyway, if you could take a moment and vote A or B, I'd appreciate it!

(Late edit) Here's a different area with better lighting and also zoomed-out. Also, it shows the UI layout, which is the same scale and won't change.
