What are you thinking about? (game development edition)

Today, I completely-by-accident stumbled onto a bug that required the following steps to trigger: use an ability with each character, open a specific chest, then challenge a specific NPC to a game of cards, and it would cause the game to freeze. I could repeat it, but leaving out any of the steps wouldn't trigger the behavior. By some miracle (and copious debug statements), I figured out a variable was being Rube Goldberged into a wrong value, so I managed to implement a fix after tussling with it for a couple hours.

So, what I'm thinking about is: I sure wish they sold alcohol on Sundays here.

Youtube seems to insist that the game of origin is World of Warcraft, and I have no way to change or remove that branding. I've never felt so insulted.

What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?

I played Child of Light when it came out, and really didn't like the feel of manufactured whimsy. I did like the battle system, though, but it kind of fell apart toward the end (about when ogre-guy joined). I think it would have benefited from allowing three party members out at once and specializing their roles a bit, then raised the stakes by having more foes on the field in lieu of punishing the player for playing correctly (such as enemies countering after being interrupted).

Right now, I'm playing through Tales from the Borderlands, which I got from this week's TellTale humble bundle. It's barely an adventure game at all (way, way less interaction than even their Walking Dead titles), but I am enjoying the story and characters a great deal. I'll probably finish it this weekend, then play the Game of Thrones one next.

I've already played the rest of the games in the bundle, so if anyone is interested in any of them (Back to the Future, Sam and Max, Walking Dead Seasons 1 and 2, Poker Night 1 and 2, A Wolf Among Us), shoot me a message and I'll give you a Steam key!

He's in Sao Paulo; my character designer is also from that area, oddly enough!

I'll put out one track every couple of weeks (there are a lot of them). I will also be saving half of them for the "actual" digital soundtrack, which I'll put out alongside the game as a sort of early-bird special. People on Steam apparently love stuff like that.

As An Adult, Do You Find Yourself Playing More Video Games At This Age Or Less?

I don't play games any more, except for a very few tentpole franchises to which I am loyal (Uncharted, Persona). I am John Q. Consumer.

How long does it take you to make a game?

Usually, I spend about two years from concept to version 1.0. I also tend to build my own systems almost entirely out of whole cloth, and gut/re-purpose built-in things wherever it's convenient. I also don't do teams, but I do obsess!

I can't imagine sitting on a single project for 5+ years. Heck, usually after a year or so, I already get bored of the story/setting I've devised and am ready to move on to a new one.

FINAL FANTASY: RECORD KEEPER

Close! Chameleon robe. I am so over this game.

FINAL FANTASY: RECORD KEEPER

Wowza. I've pulled the daily draw every day for a year+ and I think I got a three-star once or twice, and that's it.

Ugh, I keep scraping together 5 mythril in hopes of a Charlie Bucket style Hail Mary of a single pull from this banner. I swore I wouldn't buy gems just for this stupid sword, though.
