Release Something! Day IV: Discussion Thread!

Mage Duel
Was quite fun. Looking forward to Act II...

Pros:
* Battles work well
* Character creation

Cons:
* Battler graphics are inconsistent, but that's not so bad
* The panning cutscene every time you enter a battle gets tedious if you just want to blast your way up the ranks.
* I played as an Evoker with Heal Salve, which I used after each battle. If I hadn't I would have had to travel to the rest area after each battle. Alternatively, make movement speed faster.

World Crafters v.10
I've just had to give up on it because I seem to be stuck with no option but to mindlessly battle Gushers on the world map to get money. Then I went to Akarothi docks and was trapped on that map.

It sounds like a great idea. It does remind me of Morrowind which I really enjoyed.

Pros:
* Huge world to explore, great depth
* Well developed coding infrastructure

Cons: (your experience may be different)
* It lags horribly on my laptop
* In some maps all the events and doors glitch - as if someone took a screenshot of the events and moved it everytime my player moves.
* For a free-roaming sort of game idea, the maps seem extremely restrictive
* NPCs can completely block narrow passages while walking randomly
* No clear sense of how to proceed with quests.

Opinions on coloured message text

Nice range of opinions ^^ thanks.

I saw random important words highlighted in Zephyrus And The Kingdom of Heaven, where it...worked OK (especially since the storyline had so many unfamiliar names of things).

I think I will avoid colour except for signs and notices. I will certainly not be adding rainbow text here and there :)

Release Something! Day IV: Discussion Thread!

I can make butterflies passable now. (What a thing to have to say :D)

EDIT: Transfer Player events suggestion will be implemented in time. Now implemented.

Empty academy is due to lack of content - will improve.

I can only solve the shadow over bushes problem by adding invisible blocking events (which I did, but it's not elegant).

Will now go and look at improving the intro... Problems mentioned have been dealt with.

EDIT: There is a known bug in the latest version, but it's just movement animation issues. Will wait until later to release fixed version.

Thanks GRS - I've done as you say and am uploading the new game disk.

GreatRedSpirit, is there something wrong with the demo file?

Release Something! Day IV: Release Thread

I'm new to RPG Maker. Here's what I have created so far...

DEMO - DOWLOAD LINK: http://www.mediafire.com/?d4g204ttmym
Version 3.3 of the demo
OK, I'm done uploading new versions! Next time there will be content involved!
Demo is not RTP independent, sorry! (Not sure how to accomplish this!)
File size 1.7 Mb

Demo should take 30 minutes to complete, a bit more if you explore fully.
Spoiler for end of demo:
The demo should end automatically once you have advanced all completable quests to relative completion. If not,
the demo is finished when you have completed the Fairy Hunt quest, the Scroll Search quest, the Fire Safety quest, the Rat Infestation quest, and talked to Grandmaster Linus to get the Lost Time quest.

Meet sophisticated, interesting characters!

The Story
In the Year of Peace 283, the Winter Palace in Frostforth, in the Kingdom of Intellia, is attacked in a bloody, but unsuccessful coup.

The Crown Prince Keric, heir to the throne, survives and is brought up knowing nothing about his true identity.

In the absence of the Crown Prince, the Council of Intellia governs the Kingdom, waiting for the day when Prince Keric will reclaim the throne.

Now, in Y.O.P. 300, those responsible for the coup are stirring again, and the trail leads to a young mage in the Intellia Academy of Magic. His fate will determine the fate of the Kingdom.

Characters
No villains in this list, as they have yet to take a concrete form in my mind. :)

Rollo
A young mage at the Academy of Magic, and the game's main protagonist.

Mat
Rollo's friend and fellow mage at the Academy.

Alana
A young Healer whom Rollo encounters on his adventures.

Jerod
The Deputy Captain of the Town Guard of Rilvane, and a staunch ally.

Keric
Crown Prince of Intellia.

Maria
Royal nurse to Prince Keric, and one of the few survivors of the coup of Y.O.P. 283.

Features
* Tutorial system
* Quest Log
* Skill storage and retrieval
* Element Points learning system: Gain points in each of four Elements to allow learning new Skills
* Over 30 custom Skills (4 more-or-less implemented in the demo)
* Limited custom graphics (icons; changed colours in sprites; 1 custom Skill animation so far)
* Scrolls that can teach Skills to multiple characters (implemented but not useful in demo)
* Readable books, searchable chests, and other basic stuff
* Skippable, interactive introduction cutscene

Author Notes
Please give me feedback on things that don't seem right in the game, and whether this venture of mine is worthwhile! Any comments will be appreciated.

The full game will hopefully be around 4-10 hours of gameplay.

Opinions on coloured message text

I just discovered how to make text coloured in RPG Maker XP. I'd like to know if you find coloured text in messages useful or annoying, so I can decide on a consistent appearance. Any opinions would be helpful. Thanks!

A refreshing change from the other things on this site!

Intellia: in progress

Hello! Third post on this site!

I've been working away at RPG Maker XP for a while now and I have definitely created *something* that ought to end up as a finished game. If not, it will be released in episodes, perhaps.

When is it usual to create an entry for this game? At the moment you can battle some rats and watch a few cutscenes (most of my time went on creating coding infrastructure and finding ways to do things).

If I released it as it is now, would you try it out?

I find it hard to describe since I don't really know what the types of RPG mean. If you ever played Shining Force or Shining Force 2, it's inspired by that. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shining_Force)

It's a story about a prince, a young mage, a kingdom in turmoil, and the nature of magic. It features a Quest Log, Skill storage and retrieval, and limited custom graphics, particularly icons and RTP sprites.
